Notification of Auction of the “Wildmoor Cairn” on 4 December 2021

(Proxy bids accepted)

Approximately 40 years ago Alan’s brother Bill introduced Alan to a gentleman called Johnny Matthews who was a woodwork teacher at the local school.    Johnny was a very talented person who worked on the wood panelling on the Orient Express. Johnny mentioned to Alan that he knew a Latvian gentleman who was an extraordinary woodcarver.  This is the person who carved this Cairn model.

During the Second World War, the Latvian was forced to fight for the Germans.  His company was overrun by the Russians who he was then obliged to fight for.  He, along with the Russian troops, went into Berlin where he saw an opportunity to escape to the British sector.  He knew that if he was taken back to Russia he would be shot.  He was incarcerated in England in a British POW camp, during which time he made use of his leisure and became a woodcarver.  When the time came for him to be released to go back to Latvia he applied to become a British citizen and became domiciled in England.

Alan asked Johnny if his friend could carve a Cairn model if he supplied him with some photographs, which he did.  There were three models made, one is in the US and the other two were donated by the late Albert and Mrs Jean Price and the late Lil and Alf Arrowsmith as trophies for the DCC and BCC winners at our Championship Show.

However, these trophies are never taken by the winners and the committee has decided, with the agreement of those concerned, that they should be auctioned at our next two Championship shows.

The first one will be auctioned in the lunch interval at the show on 4 December and the second one at the 2022 Championship show.

Sadly, Alan cannot remember the woodcarver’s name and as Johnny is no longer with us, we will never know his name, but I think you will agree that his work is exceptional.

We shall look forward to seeing you at the show.

Regards

Linda Firth

I bought my first Cairn in the seventies, as a family pet, she was puppy farm bred, luckily she had a lovely temperament and lived a healthy long life.

My vet introduced me to Joan Hodgson, (Scarthroyd), she took me to S.C.T.C. Championship show at Slough - that was enough, I was sold.  With the help and guidance of Ann Waugh (Tribannon), Gerry Robinson (Cruzo), Barbara Clark (Petersden), Hazel Small(Avenelhouse) and Betty Morrison(Velora), I bred my first champion, Correnie Warrior in Silver, out of Velora Quick Silver by Ch Robinson Crusoe of Courtrai. He won the RCC at Crufts under Ronnie Irving.

I have bred 8 champions, 2 with BOB at Crufts and a Champion bitch winning a CC at Crufts.  I have made up a Larchlea dog, thanks to Carole Templeton.

I was given the honour of judging Crufts in 2017.  I have loved my time breeding and showing Cairns.  With the help and support of my dear friend Mandy Francis, we have travelled far and wide, these are wonderful memories.  I look forward to an enjoyable day judging the Midland Cairn Championship show.  After such difficult times let’s hope we can all look ahead to happy, healthy days.
