Our Judge; Vanessa Byrne Our Judge Mrs Vanessa Byrne When we first started thinking about getting a dog, I never imagined we’d end up with a Cairn terrier. However, after doing some serious research, visiting Crufts and watching our shortlist of breeds being judged, we decided this small adaptable dog was the easiest of the terriers to obedience train and was the one for us. In 2005 we collected our first cairn terrier; we called her Katie. We made so many mistakes with her, but she taught us so much. I started agility training with her and we both loved it. She went like a rocket; the downside was that you just didn’t know what direction she was going to go in. Just as we were getting the hang of training Katie became ill; in December 2007 she passed away. We left it a little while but then decided we were becoming too used to a dog free life so started to look for another little cairn. In 2008 we purchased the biggest Cairn in the litter (we wanted a strong and robust one) and we called her Tonka, a tough ‘toy’ and being wheaten it seemed to suit. Whilst I was waiting for her to be old enough for agility, we fell into showing. I loved it from the start. For a dog that we bought as a pet, to do a bit of agility with, she did as well as we could have ever hoped. Her last show was Crufts 2017 where she won the veteran bitch class. We didn’t ever get on with agility, but we formed a love of rally obedience and did well in several competitions until we retired. Obsessed with learning as much as I can about cairn terriers, I started judging the breed and in 2016, I accepted my first appointment, the CTA Limited show. We learn so much from our dogs, our learning journey never ends and I am very much looking forward to continuing this learning when I judge the Midland Show in March 2023.

Our Judge; Karen Saich (Lindcoly) Our Judge Miss Karen Saich I have been surrounded by Cairn terriers all my life, and could not ever see me not having this wonderful breed in my life. My parents have owned and bred Cairn terriers long before the arrival of their own children. To this day, with my own family, we enjoy the company of Cairns, Jack Russells, a Flat Coated Retriever, and a Chihuahua. Dogs have always been a big part of my life, and I have made many lifelong friends around the world because of dogs. I thank the Midland Cairn Terrier Club for asking me to judge its open show. It is a great honour and I will thoroughly enjoy meeting the people and their dogs on the day.
