Cairn Terrier Association Championship Show November 17 2002

There is nothing more enjoyable than a well run club show with a happy and convivial atmosphere – the Cairn Terrier Association’s 23 class Ch. Show, held in the very superior Winsford Civic Hall, was a really lovely show.  Secretary, Mrs Butterfield had paid attention to every little detail and I couldn’t have been better looked after.  We had a large and spacious ring, the venue altogether was one of the very best I have judged in.  I was not disappointed with the overall quality & had some superb classes, the Limit and Open classes in both sexes were very strong.  LD & OB were very difficult to split, I thought.  The breed is blessed with excellent backends and hindquarters & very few failed in hind movement but, as in so many breeds right across the 7 groups, fronts were not as good.  Wonderful temperaments, of course, they always are.  Some coats were on the blow & ready to come off but texture generally was pretty good.  I did have some smelly, greasy coats with a sticky feel – insulting to both dog & judge & not at all necessary.  I came away laden with flowers & gift vouchers feeling happy and relaxed: & the 400 odd mile round trip was no bother at all.  Thanks to the CTA for making this a very special day.

BIS was Ch Shearwater Cae de Sonhas, on top of his form & what a super dog; RBIS, Penticharm Celtic Princess, crowned on the day: BP Cloverbrook Loaded Dice, his 10th such award I understand with just a week left before his birthday.  Ch/Am Ch Uniquecottage Bright Gold was my best “golden oldie” just edging in front of another good veteran champion, Ch Starveren Chance A Glance.

MPD (4);

1.      Smee & Smith’s Oudenarde I’m Alright Jack, 6 months wh/br, full of the joys of spring & not a care in the world!  Very sound on the move, good body and proportions, strong pads, good feet & head, expressive eyes, has “naughty” written all over him, correct front, strong quarters, promising.

2.      Weedall’s Clairevona Venetian Mask, 7 months r/br, double coated, good topline, tailset & carriage, keen bright expression, full of character, moved OK behind.  Needs a little more body & to tighten up in front movement.

3.  Peers’ Tweedisle Celtic Chief.

PD (5)

1.      BP, Braybrook’s Cloverbrook Loaded Dice, gr/br, almost a year & naturally more mature & finished than the others.  Masculine head, keen eyes & expression, excellent coat, firm body, well muscled quarters, cocky & with it showman who went well, responding to handler.

2.      Berrecloth’s Sybster Sophora, 9 months gr/br, quality puppy I liked for size & type, excellent coat, lovely eyes, good topline & body, well let down hocks, fit & healthy, sound mover.

3.      Peers’ Tweedisle Chasing Vikings.

JD (12); Not the easiest of classes

1.      Harrison & Formosa’s Carradine Hudson, r/br, just 13 months & should like him to show better when standing still, his handler was very skilled & got him going confidently on the move & I liked his true movement front & back.  Excellent quality, good type & size, attractive head & eyes, deep well sprung ribs, well proportioned.

2.      Catto’s Birselaw Billy Fury, no mistaking his sex, responsive showman, very well handled, masculine & self assured, strong body, good topline, moved well behind but failed in front.  A little too proud of his tail when moving.  15 months, mature looking & made a nice picture standing.

3.      Birch’s Kinkim Wattluq

MD (1)

1.      Clairevona Venetiam Mask

ND (2)

1.      Sybster Sophora

2.      Keeves’ Seveek Dream Special, red, pleasing head, bright eyes, good coat texture, level topline.  Moved OK behind but needs to strengthen in front.

GD (4)

1.      Shopland’s Cherrycrack G’Day Sunshine, gr/br, sound enough when he settled down, very fit youngster, typical head, dark eyes, excellent feet & coat texture.

2.      Templeton’s Larchlea If Looks Could Kill, 11 months, good ribcage, active & well muscled.  Ears rather large giving him a foreign expression.  Bit too much of him altogether for me.

PGD (8)

1.      West’s Kinkim Devonsludy Three with Junetta, easy winner, quality head & expression, dark intelligent eyes, lovely coat & condition, moved & showed nicely, well muscled quarters, nicely balanced.

2.      Tracey’s Crowneast Boy Blue Wonder, wh/br, excellent showman who never gave up, handled to advantage, clean coat of good texture, animated mover, good ribcage, well carried tail, keen expression, personality plus.  Went well behind but needs to tighten up in front.

3.      Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Bright Colours

LD (10); Very good class, first 3 fought hard for their placings.

1.      Thompson’s Castleline Star Trooper, good honest dog, workmanlike & reliable – I took a long time over this class but he never got fed up & just kept going.  Weather resistant coat, firm body, good bone, fit & hard, free moving, good head & outlook.

2.      Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Jack in the Country, r/br I really liked. Had him in mind to win the class but just let his concentration slip at the crucial moment.  Good outline, well laid shoulders, quality head, well fitting jacket, sound mover.

3.      Birch’s Kinkim Kenza Ruffn Too

A top class trio

OD (5); Even class & a pleasure to judge

1.      CC & BIS, Wall’s Ch Shearwater Cae de Sonhas, r/br, truly looked the part, tuned into his “mum” & showed non stop, fit firm body, great proportions, perfect tailset & carriage, free easy mover with good stride, lovely well let down hocks, thick strong pads, broad skull, strong underjaw, most appealing in every way, plenty of ring presence & attitude.

2.      RCC, Cameron’s Ch Stryveling Ivanhoe, r/br of excellent quality, beautifully clean & well conditioned, in hard condition, well sprung deep ribs, good topline & quality harsh jacket, responsive showman, moved with drive.

3.      Harrison & Formosa’s Ch Carradine Toblerone.  It was lovely to have such good dogs to choose from.

BD (1)

1.      Davey’s Castleline Game Spirit, well that’s just what he did not appear to have!  Depressed about it all here & refused to show or move with any animation.  Good body, well muscled & fit but such a sad face.

V (7)

1.      Parker Tucker’s  Ch/Am Ch Uniquecottage Bright Gold, 8 years red in good form, no sign of old age creeping up, sound mover, excellent harsh jacket, steady sensible showman, quality head, moved soundly.  Hot on his heels was

2.      Middlehurst’s Ch Starveren Chance A Glance, a year older than 1, masculine gr/br, strong body & quarters, well fitting jacket, well presented & conditioned, enjoying himself, very well preserved.

3.      Ward’s Vanajam Palmist

MPB (16); A lot of nice baby girls here

1.      Weedall’s Clairevona Victorian Ice, 7 months r/br, very pretty puppy, full of type & quality, lovely head, bright eyed & high spirited, firm body, topline & back end, excellent coat & proportions, went well

2.      Dolan’s Glenrood Dream Pipit, 8 months, very feminine head, good outline, topline & body, well conditioned coat.  Stylish mover but still  bit loose in front.

3.      Smee & Smith’s Oudenarde Belle Amour.  Three very good puppies.

PB (7)

1.      Templeton’s Larchlea Looks Like Heaven, 11 months gr/br, wicked expression, dark intelligent eyes, excellent coat, plenty of body, well sprung ribs, busy showgirl – interested in everything, moved quite well.

2.      Hughes’ Spawyche Dawn Chorus at Gyncairn, 10 months, coat not at its best.  Nice quality bitch, showed with style, pretty head, pleasing expression, good body & bone, easy mover.

3.      Poile’s Kedvaiy Livin Doll

JB (11); Lovely class

1.      BJ, Shaw’s Honeyhall Headway, real eyecatcher & hard to look away from, feminine head, keen eyes & expression, shapely outline, well set & carried tail, very focused on the job of showing.  Jacket harsh & well fitting but could have been fresher smelling.  In the last 3 for the CC & fully deserved to be there.  Well handled.  Went a bit wide in front on the last up & down.

2.      Hooton’s Penticharm Burning Desire, lovely r/br, pushed 1 all the way, attractive head & expression, clean coat, strong quarters & hind movement, good legs & feet, well balanced.

3.      Cameron’s Stryveling Tusitala

MB (5)

1.      Clairevona Victorian Ice

2.      Grainger’s Oudenarde Buffy’s Angel, res in MPB, 6 months dark brindle, shapely puppy, wicked dark eyes full of mischief, super coat, moved well when she managed to keep all 4 feet on the ground.

3.      Bennett’s Seveek Life’s A Breeze at Maximal

NB (2)

1.      McGuirk’s Clairevona Dulciv Inferno, dark brindle, showed with style, excellent coat texture, firm body, deep ribs, feminine head, dark eyes, moved OK

UGB (8)

1.      Ward’s Vanajam Trick A Treat, wh/br, nicely proportioned outline, good shape & size, moved quite well, feminine expression.  Coat on the blow.

2.      Jeffrey’s Sandaig Suilean Dubh, good honest bitch in hard condition, excellent topline, attractive head.  Moved with animation but got a little bored & distracted when posed.

3.      Dolan’s Glenrood Magic Berry

GB (11)

1.      Firth & Jones’ Cairngold Charcoal, very shapely dark brindle of quality, lovely topline kept on the move, pleasing head, well fitting coat, well conditioned, moved & showed nicely.

2.      Berrecloth’s Sybster Sooty, dam of the good PD, quality head, in good coat form, fit firm body, excellent muscle tome, good bone, legs & feet.  Just not as good in front as 1.

3.      Dolan’s Glenrood Forever Beauty

PGB  (11)

1.      CC & RBIS, Jones’ Penticharm Celtic Princess, lovely type, showed herself off to very best advantage, naughty but nice!  Well balanced with good head & eyes, clean neck & shoulders, very sound on the move, well let down hocks, true front.  Overcame some stiff opposition to get the CC, her 3rd I believe, very well deserved.

2.      Sybster Sooty

3.      Buttress’ Uniquecottage Gold Tilly

LB (12)

1.      Fyfe’s Andrum Lady Penelope, smart young bitch, took my eye when she first appeared on the go around & didn’t disappoint at close quarters, confident relaxed showgirl, quality head, dark eyes, sound, fit & healthy, good outline & proportions.

2.      Longdin’s Wellingley What Now, natural showgirl who was enjoying herself, a little loose in front movement but did everything right & looked a picture standing.  Pretty head, good bone, coat & outline.

3.      Dolan’s Glenrood Forever Megan

OB (10, 3a); The hardest class of them all as it was such an even one.  Two had to be excluded from the line up & that was difficult too.

1.      RCC, Short’s Glenchess Night Owl, typy bitch, did not put a foot wrong, apparently I had given her a RCC before.  Well conditioned coat, fit & well muscled, excellent topline, well sprung ribs, good head & ring presence, sound mover, assertive showgirl.  Rather unlucky to come up against the young & fresh looking PGB winner having won this super OB class.  Don’t give up, I’m sure that 3rd CC can’t be far away!

2.      Catto’s Birselaw Bobbysox, same way bred as Billy Fury, but from an earlier litter.  Perfect coat, lovely head, eyes & expression, well balanced, good outline, showed with composure, very well presented & conditioned.  Moved well behind, shade loose in front.

3.      Hooton’s Penticharm Primadonna

BB (8)

1.      Turnbull’s Tribannon Destiny of Bedrule, wheaten VHC in UGB, excellent firm body, neat head, dark expressive eyes, calm & steady showgirl.
