LADIES KENNEL ASSOCIATION
13TH December 2003
CAIRN TERRIERS – Judges Report
Judging
affords one the privilege of going over other people’s stock and I would like
to thank all the exhibitors who helped to make this long awaited day so
enjoyable. The lack of quality in dogs has already been well documented, but that
said Open Dog was treat to see – 4 Champions and a ticket winner. In bitches
the ‘class of the day’ was Post Graduate, interestingly the 5 places were taken
by just 2 breeders. In the line up for the Bitch Ticket I was spoilt for
choice.
For me
a Cairn must be as the standard says, workman like and should appear to be able
to account for itself if the occasion arises. Many could not and I found
several weak jaws with resultant small teeth and also some lacking in
substance. Construction and therefore movement both fore and aft is still a
problem in too many. Sadly there were also 3 unacceptable bites, 1 set of round
eyes and 1 suspect temperament. I also
discovered why some dogs seem to have been particularly hard done by in the
past. Ringsiders do not see all!
Presentation
penalised a few exhibits, a good coat coming is better than one on the blow. A
few were very heavily coated which spoilt the overall outline and whilst I’m
not keen on the ‘sculptured model look’ tidiness completes the picture.
Surprisingly few people seem to trim out between the pads these days.
MPD 8(4) 1 Weedall’s CLAIREVONA VIBRANT KNIGHT 6½ months red, confident & eager
to please, very immature as yet, needs to grow on and
hopefully tighten up in front.
2 Newton’s STRATHINVER ROYAL APPLAUSE Somewhat unbalanced as yet and
quite
heavy over the shoulders for one so young. Not the calibre we have seen from
this
kennel in the past
3 Culliford’s
BRENNDARCY COUNTRY MOUSE
PD 7(2) A difficult class to judge, all very different types
1 Shopland’s
CHERRYCRACK FOOLS GOLD Short of coat
but nothing to hide, good length of leg and back, there appears to be no
constructional reason for his sometimes erratic movement – just puppy exuberance.
A good prospect
2 Kinton’s
WOODTHORPE THE GAMBLING MAN Well up
to size, not coarse but in heavy coat. A real masculine head and expression
with nice big teeth. Movement excellent retaining positive topline, my type.
3 Leese’
CLOVERBROOK SILVER REBEL
JD 4 1 Harrison’s
& Formosa’s CARRIDINE PENFORD Almost
out of Junior but still
somewhat
immature, his movement impressed but badly needs a new coat.
2 Fairweather’s OCK
I’M THE BOSS Attractive head, a bit unbalanced in that
the
forequarters are quite heavy in comparison to the hindquarters. Moved well enough
but
needs better overall presentation
3 Bambridge’s CARRADINE
MASTER GUY FOR LUVEMAL
PG 9(3) 1 Thompson’s CASTLELINE PRINCE HARRY A well constructed dog who doesn’t
always do himself justice when standing, moved with plenty
of drive and showed
well.
Needs a new coat
2 Peers’ TWEEDISLE CHASING VIKINGS Head not as masculine as I would
like,
overall
good size and reasonably well balanced, lethargic in movement today and not
really
enjoying himself
3 Ramsden's CAIRNGOLD SPARTICUS
LD 7(2) 1 Robert’s CANNWOOD AUGUREY Very smart cream dog, beautifully presented,
best of heads with lovely dark eye and perfect mouth. He
conforms well to the
standard
without being overdone, never stopped showing. However he did not move
as
well as I would like on the day.
2 Birch’s KINKIM WATTLUQ Typical of
this kennel, consistent breeding of type
over many years.
Lovely dark points, good bone without being heavy, well balanced giving
pleasing overall picture. As usual presented with perfection. Would like to see
just a bit more spark of individuality/animation but shows well enough
3 Cadogan’s DOGAN JAMESY COTTER
OD
7(2) 1 Cameron’s CH. STRYVELING IVANHOE Fine upstanding
dog exactly what I like
to find. Some may say his head is not masculine enough but
it is the overall picture
that
counts. The best of fronts and shoulders, strong well muscled quarters, moved
with
plenty of drive, really covering the ground. Came fresh to the ring after a
break,
presented
in beautiful condition and coat. Pleasure to award him the CC & BOB
2 Wall’s CH. SHEARWATER CAE DE SONHAS What a great ambassador for the
breed,
I can add nothing to what has been said in the past, just did not have quite to
charisma
of 1 today. RCC. Pleased to see him take 3rd place in the Champion
Stakes
later.
3. Braybrook’s CH. CLOVERBROOK LOADED DICE.
MPB 9(2) 1 Parker-Tucker’s
UNIQUECOTTAGE GLENGETTIE 8½ months
well grown, with
lovely head, and real Cairn but feminine expression, good
large teeth. Sufficient bone
with good length of leg and well balanced
overall. Quite heavily coated but this does
not detract from her overall quality. Moved
well but a little wayward yet. Time on her
side, with maturity she will be hard to beat.
2 Osborn’s TWESLAM KALAMAZOO A little larger than we normally see from this
kennel
but consistent type, 7½ months, very confident and outgoing. However did not
hold
her topline quite as well as 1 and was unlucky to meet one of ‘my type’. A
promising
young bitch.
3 Braybrook’s CLOVERBROOK RE-LOADED
PB
14(2) 1 Catto’s BIRSELAW SPECIAL MOMENT Mature puppy in
very full coat, perhaps
a little more short coupled than I usually like, but she
is not unbalanced and is sound
in
conformation and movement. Moved out well retaining her topline and never
stopped showing. BP
2 Shopland’s CHERRYCRACK CHASING AIMEE Different type altogether, rather
more
rangy, good angulation which meant she moved with drive when she settled.
Out of coat, will watch her progress with
interest.
3 Poile’s KEDVAIY PASCALI
JB
15(3) 1 Shaw’s HONEYHALL HIJINX If ever there was a star in the making, here
she is.
So feminine, confident and outgoing. Perhaps a little
smaller than I normally like,
beyond that I found nothing to dislike about
her and her quality cannot be denied, just
not quite mature enough yet for the top spot. Wish she was
mine. RCC
2
Pollock’s STANEDYKES DIVA Always admired her as a puppy and she is
maturing well. Really wicked expression, her heavy coat is doing
her no favours and
she
looks a bit cobby and shorter on the leg than she is. Very hard well muscled
condition, excellent movement.
3 Smee’s RING THAT BELLE FOR MALMAY
PGB
16(3) 1 Grainger’s
OUDENARDE BUFFY’S ANGEL Really
beautiful head with that
slightly wicked expression, good length of
neck into the best of fronts and shoulders.
Strong well muscled hindquarters giving plenty
of drive on the move. Quality coat
although could possibly do with a bit more.
Gives her all in showmanship and also
displays that hint of devilment that makes for
individuality. A pleasure to award her
3rd CC
2 Smee’s OUDENARDE BELLE AMOUR Litter sister to above, similar remarks
apply but a bit short of coat and did not hold
her topline quite so well. Neither of
these two extrovert bitches allow the handlers
a moment’s relaxation in the ring!
3 Harrison & Formosa’s SPAWYCHE FOREVER AMBER AT CARRADINE
LB
6(1) 1 Munday’s STRADIVARIUS SONATA One I have admired
from the ringside for a
long time and I was not disappointed, lovely
well furnished head, correct length of
neck with good shoulders and front. I particularly like
her length of leg and overall balance, she moves with drive and never stops
showing. Unfortunately she is having to give way to the very young stars
appearing at the moment.
2 Weaver’s COPSELEAZE LITTLE GEM Lovely
dark points enhance her
expression, she is well muscled and in hard
condition with an excellent quality coat,
moved well and shows all the time. Just a
little portly. A real honest workman type of
bitch who has probably been overlooked because
of it.
3 Shannon & Storr’s BRENNDARCY SOLAR CORONA
OB
6(2) 1 Jones’ CH PENTICHARM CELTIC PRINCESS The
quality of this bitch is
undeniable, she meets the standard perfectly
and was presented in top order. Moving
she is
a joy to watch and standing her attention to her handler never waivers.
However on the day I would have liked her to show that extra spark
of individuality
that
made the CC & RCC winners stand out for me.
2 Firth & Jones’ CAIRNGOLD CHARCOAL Very well balanced
bitch with keen
expression, again gives the impression of being workman like but
with a feminine
personality. Moves really well with plenty of drive keeping her
excellent level
topline. In the best of coats. Different type to 1 but very
typical of the breed.
