Three Counties Championship Dog Show
Monday, 9th June, 2003
Cairn Terriers
Judge: Graham S Peers
It was enjoyable to judge in
fine sunny weather with a light breeze keeping the warmth of the day to a
tolerable degree. Yet, it was a pity that the ground of a large area of the
outside ring had been spoilt by the contractors vehicles driving over it but
after all is said and done; this is an agricultural showground and they should
possess the equipment needed to enable these outside rings to be raked over and
lightly rolled before cordoning them off
- so why wasn’t this done?
The entry may
have been a disappointment to the show committee but I was very grateful for
the support of those who, on the day,
had travelled a good distance to attend; they cannot all have gone away with a
good result but trust they will accept that only the dogs affected the placing.
Whilst on this subject, after the judging, many asked if the charming young
lady wearing a long skirt (split front and back) and displaying legs to rival
those of a young Marlene Dietriech, in the Limit Bitch Class, had affected my
judging. Not having been aware of this attraction and paying utmost attention
to the dogs, I answered by telling of only seeing a very charming pair of
ankles alongside a quality Cairn bitch to which I awarded second placing.
Though, it was so pleasing of her being in Limit Bitch and not Dog for, from
the conversations heard, she certainly took over centre stage. (smile)
Minor Puppy Dog (2)
1st Stephinson’s Twohoots Allsaints Arthur
a light red of good size and proportions with an excellent head, correct neck and shoulders, moved
well and certainly enjoying his outing.
2nd Tutchings’
Crowneast Mr Frosty a wheaten with black points who is still very much a baby and
over-awed by the occasion. Lovely expression in a head typical of this kennel,
good bone and substance, nice topline and tailset but held himself too close to
the ground with his head and tail down to be able to assess his movement.
Puppy Dog (3 - 1 abs)
1st Thompson’s Castleline
Prince Harry a very masculine wheaten brindle of good size and balance
possessing an excellent head with well-placed ears and the correct shaped dark
eye to provide the necessary Cairn expression, a slightly better stop would
have had me raving about it; good neck, topline and tailset; held his head and
tail up and moved with good drive; an excellent future should await him. BPD
2nd Tutchings’
Crowneast Hurrican Floyd, good head with excellent mouth, good length of
leg, good neck and shoulders, a touch too long in the coupling and would like a
shade heavier bone; moved and showed well.
Junior Dog (4)
1st Templeton’s Larchlea If Looks Could
Kill a handsome headed grey brindle of good Cairn type, good neck and
shoulders with strong quarters shown in full coat. His topline wasn’t his
fortune due to length of rear legs but overall a very showy dog. Like all the
others in this class he was too active to wish to keep four legs or himself on
the ground when moving but due to the ground and giving all a chance to settle,
he finally settled to show good movement.
2nd Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Leaf, a
good sized cream shown in a good coat who appears to be a late developer but
holds himself well and shows well but could be a bit more positive on the move
for his handler. Another which needs a slightly better stop to improve upon a
nice head of good proportions. Moved freely and showed well.
3rd Confue’s Anjofra
Bang On The Door
Post-Graduate Dog (10 – 2 abs)
1st Cadogan’s Dogan Jamesy Cotter wheaten
with black points, well-placed ears on a lovely head with dark mask; good neck, shoulders, topline and tailset,
well-bodied to present a nicely balanced dog with good angulation, moved
soundly both coming and going. Deserved his award of RDCC.
2nd Ramsden’s Cairngold Sparticus dark red brindle of
good size and proportions, with good head and typical expression from eyes of
correct shape and colour, neck, shoulders, topline and tailset all good; good
texture to coat; handled and moved well.
3rd Birch’s Kinkim Wattluq.
Limit Dog (5)
As
when last judging the breed this class was very disappointing and this should
be the one from which our future champions are emerging; yet there were ones
entered in Open before their time when their prospects were far superior if
they had been entered in this class.
1st West’s Kinkim Devonsludy Three With Junetta
2nd Keeves & Bennett’s Vanajam Amulet With Maxiveek
3rd Towers’ Rossarden Ladhroaig
Open Dog (8)
1st Birch’s Kinkim Kenza Ruffn Too wheaten
brindle of nicely balanced proportions, not the largest of dogs when compared
with some but is as the Standard requires; a good headed dog with correct
length of neck, straight front, good shoulders, topline and tailset; coat of
good texture; steady but an excellent
mover. I went with an open mind and as all judges must do had some dogs one I
was looking forward to going over, he was not one of these but on the day found
he very much deserved to win this class and to be awarded the DCC.
2nd Cameron’s Ch. Stryveling Ivanhoe in many ways an
excallent dog full of quality yet marred by a couple of things which to me, he
just cannot overcome. An all male dog with an impressive head but loses the
necessary expression due to his light eye. Well-bodied and a delight to go over
for there is little to fault; in excellent coat, turned out and presented to
perfection; covered the ground well and his free movement is as expected from
this sound dog but yet, he loses his shape on the move; his head thrusts
forward and his tail stretched straight behind him, in no way as eye-catching a
dog as the one he left behind, standing.
3rd Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Tidy Shoes.

Minor Puppy Bitch (9 – 1 abs)
1st Smee & Smith’s Ring That Bell a delightful 7 month old
wheaten with black points; should have a very promising future before her but
unfortunately some get lost along the road but find it hard to believe this
will happen to ‘Bell?’. Caught my eye immediately on glancing down the line and
didn’t disappoint, either on the table or on the move. Liked the picture
presented on the table when looking through her from behind. Head of a size
which blended well to body size; neat ears, well-placed and carried erect, good
stop, correct shape and colour of eyes with her eyelashes assisting in giving a
beautiful feminine expression; good neck, shoulders and a straight front,
topline and tailset good; good legs, feet and angulation; nicely presented with
coat of a good texture; moved and showed well. Won a hard decision over a very
good dog puppy to gain BP.
2nd Keeve’s Seveek Chasing Dreams light
red with very feminine head well-furnished, good neck, shoulders, topline and
tailset, well-made throughout, very lively on the move.
3rd Keeves & Bennett’s Seveek One Moment In Time with Maxiveek
Puppy Bitch (no entries)
Junior
Bitch (7)
1st Templeton’s Larchlea
Looks Like Heaven good type of bitch with a true Cairn head and expression;
grey brindle shown in good coat; well-bodied and nicely made throughout; more
than met the standard for being agile and having a gay disposition, for strong
quarters enabled her to leap freely at will but later moved correctly when
finally settled down to the job in hand. One of a good type and certainly
possessing the typical lively spirit of a Cairn within her and this was a
deciding factor on awarding her the RBCC.
2nd Dolan’s Glenrood Dream Pipit;
a lovely rich wheaten coloured bitch which presents a striking outline when
viewed from the side; good length of leg balanced by her length of back; head
well set on to excellent neck which runs into a level topline and the final piece, the tail correctly set-on and
of a length which balances out nicely to the neck and head; good head with
lovely mouth; well handled and showed well; turned out to perfection but the
coat could be that little bit more harsher. Today, she was unlucky to come up
against the winner, another day who knows?
3rd Weedall’s Clairevona
Victorian Ice
Post-Graduate
Bitch (8)
1st White’s Kervaig Skye
Sapphire, a wheaten brindle bitch of a decent size and meets the Standard
very well; attractive head but eye a little lighter than I would wish; good
neck and level topline; handled and showed well, moving freely; overall, well
deserved her placing. Afterwards, learnt that she was my BP when judging the
Welsh KC Ch. Show, eighteen months ago.
2nd Weaver’s Copseleaze
Little Gem, one out of our dog but placed on merit; wheaten brindle of a
correct size with lovely feminine head with dark points; well bodied and shown
in hard condition; her excellent strong hind quarters with correct space between hocks provided good
drive for moving freely on the move; showed in good coat but a little more care
is required when preparing her topline for show purposes, too thick a coat was
left on both ends of her back so spoiling the necessary levelled top
3rd Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage
Celtic Song.
Limit
Bitch (10 – 2 abs)
1st Waugh’s Andrum Carlotta,
it was pleasing to see the handler was treating her in a more sensitive and
kind manner than at times in the past. Carlotta, instead of her usual
resistance, responded to this and for once both worked as a pair and we were
treated to a great performance. A quality wheaten brindle bitch of a nice size
and balance, shown in good coat of correct texture and presented well. Lovely
head of balanced proportions and with a true feminine expression. A very sound
bitch to go over on the table, with not much to fault. Always alert and active,
paying attention to her handler and responding to commands, it was a joy to
watch her free action when moving around the ring. On the day, well deserved
her reward of BCC & BOB.
2nd Liljeqvist & Christi’s Olsakers
Carrie at Blueyell (imp). Wheaten
brindle of a nice compact shape, nicely balanced with good length of leg and
back; a feminine bitch with good head and dark eye; nice reach of neck set into
correct sloping shoulders; well presented with correct harsh coat but requiring
much more of it then she carried today. Well handled, moved and showed well.
3rd Osborn’s Tweslam Dot Com.
Open
Bitch (6 – 1 abs)
1st Goldfinch’s Kanawha Listen Again wheaten brindle with an alert and attentive manner of a good size but balanced; good expressive
head; shown with excellent coat and in a hard condition; showed and moved well;
held her shape very well when on the move and certainly earned her placing for
she didn’t put a foot wrong..
2nd Phillips’ Sarachelle Just
Daisy at Jaeva lovely bitch of a good type; possessing a most attractive
feminine head with good expression, good front, well bodied but needing more
coat but let down by a very badly trimmed tail and tailset.
