LEEDS CHAMPIONSHIP DOG SHOW 25.7.05
CAIRN TERRIERS
I consider it a privilege to judge our lovely breed at this level and am somewhat overcome by the number of favourable comments received! I try to have no pre conceived ideas beyond hoping that dogs I have admired from the ringside will be entered. With entry fees approaching almost extortionate figures every dog should be given the same respect and opportunity and not be subject to ‘selective’ judging, equally exhibits should be presented in the best possible condition and I was dismayed to find yet again lack of attention to dentition and even some lack of basic grooming – Cairns do have hair under their tummies and inside their back legs! Unfortunately some exhibits had eyes lighter than desirable.
As usual bitches outshone the dogs although in general I was very pleased with my individual class winners. In the line up for the bitch CC there was obvious evidence of consistent breeding to type.
MPD 1 1 Shannon & Storrs’ BRENNDARCY CRACKER JACK 7 months, good mouth & teeth, head needs to develop more, plenty of bone & size, correct coat but carrying a bit too much weight.
PD 3 1 Jefferys’ SANDAIG SHEARER 9 months in prolific coat but nothing to hide underneath, masculine head, good mouth, correct shoulder lay into level topline, moved with drive, scored on maturity for BP
2 Newtons’ STRATHINVER DASH OF GINGER Very different type to 1, head needs to develop at lot more, moved well enough but not in good coat.
3 Buttress’ NUTSHKI BOY WALTON
JD 3 1 Felters & Rumens’ LANDBUCK LITTLE TYKE Very masculine young dog with lovely head. Good bone, front & shoulders into level topline held on the move. Covered the ground well, but out of coat. Should have a bright future when he matures.
2 Firth’s CAIRNGOLD COSMONAUT Another promising youngster, slightly longer cast than 1 but not unbalanced, again not in good coat.
3 Warne’s ROYAL SILVER
ND 2 1 STRATHINVAR DASH OF GINGER
2 Tracey’s CLAIREVONA VENETIAN MASK Reasonable head but lacking in reach of neck and moved rather wide in front although covered the ground OK.
PGD 6 1 Ehrenberg’s CARRADINE MASTER TIGGER Not a big one but all male with great expression, correct mouth and teeth, plenty of neck into good shoulders and super level topline, he moves with drive and was presented in high order as usual by this handler, just not quite mature enough for RCC.
2 Peers’ TWEEDISLE THAT SPECIAL MAN This dog was incredibly lucky to get this place, initially would not use his ears! He’s a good sort, very well made with adequate bone, reach of neck, tail not his fortune but he moves well. Doesn’t do himself justice, but pulled the stops out when it mattered.
3 Smith’s ROSCAVALE GOOD LUCK CHARM
LD 8 (2) 1 Harrison & Inett’s HYDECASTLE FLIC-FLAC FOR CARRADINE (Imp) Very well made dog, size I like, excels in head neck & shoulders, the best of fronts, well muscled and really can move when he concentrates. Coat at its best, presented with perfection and handled sympathetically, he is not easy but today he deserved & got the CC.
2 Confue’s ANJOFRA BANG ON THE DOOR I have long admired him but he was not at his best today. Excellent mouth & good big teeth, keen male expression, his bone structure is as required and he moves right. Sadly out of coat.
3 Berrecloth’s SYBSTER SPRING TIME
OD 6 (1) 1 Middlehurst’s Ch. CANNWOOD AS IF BY MAGIC TO STARVEREN JW A very worthy young champion, such a typical Cairn and very representative of the breed, he demands attention and his only downfall today was to meet something of the size I prefer. RCC
2 Weinberger’s CORRENIE ALTISSIMO I like this dog a lot and he meets the breed requirements admirably but he just lacks that bit of animation/spark that our breed should have.
3 Wall’s Ch. SHEARWATER CAE DE SONHAS
MPB 5 1 Felters & Rumens’ LANDBUCK HEIDI CLAIRE A very raw baby but all the correct essentials and eager to please, lovely head and reach of neck, level topline, moves well, coat reasonable, very promising.
2 Tracey’s RETACY SPRINGTIME GIRL Exactly same age as 1 but quite a bit smaller, will need to develop more bone, topline not as positive as 1, but showed well & deserved her place.
3 Shannon & Storrs’ BRENNDARCY POLLY FLINDERS
PB 3 1 Mears’ GLENMEAR MARCUELLA Well grown puppy with excellent bone structure particularly well let down hocks and turn of stifle. She appears to have no neck but if she was trimmed out a little more it would be to advantage. She moves positively and shows well but immature as yet.
2 Bambridge’s CARRADINE CRČME BRULEE FOR LUVEMAL Very feminine little bitch with the sweetest of heads, as usual from this breeding construction excellent, correct coat but for me a bit too small.
3 Marshall’s KENMILFORE LADY MARMALADE
JB 5 (2) 1 Catto’s BIRSELAW IT’S MY MOMENT The stock from this kennel is so consistently bred to type – this bitch has a really lovely head, very feminine but slightly wicked expression, excellent mouth, big teeth. Adequate bone and so well constructed that she couldn’t move wrong if she tried! In very good coat and beautifully presented. She just needs a bit more maturity to worry the best.
2 Butterfield’s CAMASMOR CREDENCE She is a bit longer cast than 1 but not unbalanced, good size but not overdone. Attractive head with particularly neat ears and sweet expression. Could do with a new coat and not so attentive to her handler today.
3 Clarke’s CAROCAIRN MISS MARIGOLD
NB 4 (1) All 3 bitches in this class made their handlers work hard!
1 Cameron’s STRYVELING MEG MERRILEES Immature but very promising young bitch of good size. Particularly liked her head, she is well constructed and when she settled moved very well.
2 Confue’s ANJOFRA NINE WEST Naughty but nice, well up to size, coat no asset today, only just out of puppy so time on her side – hopefully.
3 Bristol’s CAMASMOR CAILIN FROM KENROSS
PGB 8 (2) 1 Templeton’s LARCHLEA REMEMBER REMEMBER Lovely bitch well up to size but not overdone. Such a lovely head with really wicked expression, dark eye and deep stop. One of the best mouths of the day with good big teeth. Her correct length of neck flows into the best of fronts & shoulders, she is well balanced and moves with great drive. Never stops showing and immaculately presented in the best of coats. Little separates her from her older half sister apart from maturity. RCC
2 Sharp & Petts’ CANNWOOD KASTA SPELL Another quality bitch although not quite the size of 1, interestingly sister of Dog RCC winner and my notes were very similar. However feel she is probably going to be a late maturer and will watch her with interest.
3 Moseley’s SPAWYCHE ELIZABETHAN RUBY
LB 6 1 Catto’s BIRSELAW SPECIAL MOMENT Very similar to her younger sister, when standing her head carriage is very high which makes her look a bit short cast, however on the move she is perfectly balanced. As usual the best of heads and expression, good size, of excellent construction and presented in top condition.
2 Moseley’s SPAWYCHE ELIZABETHAN PEARL I have always admired the stock from this kennel, they are of consistent type, very attractive feminine bitch although perhaps a little small for me but that is no fault. Loveliest of heads, well balanced, moved with drive and showed well but makes her handler work hard when devilment takes over.
3 Jeffery’s SANDAIG SUILEAN DUBH
OB 6 (2) 1 Templeton’s LARCHLEA LET ME ENTERTAIN U Similar remarks to her half sister, to me she gave her all and more on the day. This breeder really does produce the goods time and time again. CC & BOB
2 Middlehurst’s STARVEREN CHANCE TO DREAM Different type of bitch, slightly shorter cast but excellent bone and movement. Presented in top order and certainly demands attention – different day - different judge the result could well be different.
