 NATIONAL TERRIER CLUB CHAMP SHOW

CAIRN TERRIERS

 JUDGE    Pat Jeffrey

It was a great privilege to judge at National Terrier. Quality throughout was mixed but there were plenty of Cairns of high quality there. Contrary to comments I have heard or read lately, I don’t agree that Cairns are in a parlous state. Rear movement has improved considerably and is much better than it was 3 or 4 years ago. There were plenty of good, well-proportioned heads, both in dogs and bitches, but there were a few with narrow heads, snipy forefaces and large ears. Surely it is up to exhibitors to acknowledge this in their stock and to breed for the correct Cairn head. Very dark, nearly black, eyes can look very becoming and make for a very attractive head, but to get the real Cairn expression the eyes need to be dark hazel, and not too round. Construction, condition and presentation of nearly all exhibits was quite good and I was pleased to see several in full coat. I did find a few exhibits with either small teeth or level bites. Temperament, as ever, was good.

3                   KEEVES’ SEVEEK THE MYSTERY OF DREAMS

NB (8 – 2)

Class of mixed type and quality.

2              BRADSHAW’S NEWFIELD HEATHER HONEY;- Red brindle, quite different type to 1, not quite so  ultra feminine, and more heavily built but still with an attractive head with hazel eye. In full coat of good quality.

3              SHORT’S GLENCHESS LITTLE BLACK NUMBER

UGB (4 – 2)

1                   TUTCHING’S CROWNEAST SUGAR BABE;- Only 2 in this class, and of different type. Red with very appealing head, good stop. Good topline, and overall made a nicely balanced picture.

2                   EAST’S HEIGHINGTON NETTLE;-Dark grey brindle in good quality jacket. Good head and expression. Rather  heavy in body, which spoiled the  overall  balance a bit.

GB      (6 – 1)

1       WARD’S VANAJAM HOKCUS POKCUS;- Lovely feminine, upstanding bitch in good short coat. Gorgeous head, good neck and shoulders, firm quarters. Well balanced and looked good both standing and moving.

PGB   (7)

A lot of quality in this class.

1                   HOOTON’S PENTICHARM DEEP SECRET RES CC. Light red  brindle. Lovely feminine head, level topline and tailset. Well balanced, showed well. Absolutely typical of the bitches bearing  this affix  over many years.

2                   MOSELEY’S SPAWYCHE ELIZABETHAN RUBY;-Light red brindle, similar to 1. Lovely feminine, well proportioned head, good stop, nice eye, neat ears. In good coat and moving souldly. Another kennel which keeps on producing lovely bitches.

LB   (11 – 2)

Very good class of varying type.

1                   POILE’S KEDVAIY PASCALI;- same way bred as 2 in Jun Dog and similar remarks apply. Same lovely clear red, crisp coat. Excellent head and expression, good sprng of rib, firm quarters. Moved well.

2                   PARKER-TUCKER’S UNIQUECOTTAGE GLENGETTIE;-Different type to 1 but just as appealing. Very typical Cairn head, dark points. Level topline which she kept all the time. In full coat of excellent quality. I just thought 1 had the slightly more feminine head.

OPEN B (6 – 1)

1              WARD’S VANAJAM TRICK A TREAT  CC & BOB. Light red brindle, most attractive feminine head, good stop, nice eye, neat ears. Lovely neck and shoulders, good topline and tailset. 3              POLLOCK’S STANEDYKES DIVA
