Cairn Terriers (80 / 83)

I was pleased with an entry of 80 dogs, as it is just over a year since I last judged the breed, for which I thank the exhibitors. I have to say that I was disappointed with the quality in the young dog classes. However, in the bitch classes there was a better depth of quality, making for some close decisions. I had a few nice bitches that were carrying far too much weight, affecting their performance and movement. Poor muscle tone was also more evident. I had a few mouths that only just made it and one or two that were incorrect.

MPD. 5 (2abs) 1; Keeves’ Seveek It’s a Gift, 6 mth red br very much a baby. Has a nicely proportioned head with a nice eye and bite. Good in shoulder and topline, in good coat. Moved out well and showed with confidence for such a baby. Would like a bit more body condition on him though. 2; Burnetts Kilnyard Archie Spangles, almost 8 mth light red. Bigger & heavier type than class winner. Has a good spring of rib and coat is of correct texture. Not as good in head as 1st or as positive in rear movement. 3; Peers’ Tweedisle Pathfinder.

PD; 2,  1; Firth & Jones’ Cairngold Cosmonaut,  almost 12 mth wheaten br. Needs to grow on a bit. Nicely shaped head would prefer a slightly smaller ear. Good neck and shoulder. Nicely bodied and in good coat. Moved well in front but a bit close behind. 2; Kilnyard Archie Spangles.

JD 5, 1; Poiles Kedvaiy Harlequin, deep clear red of 15mths. Very good in head with a lovely expression. Excels in front and shoulder, well angulated both ends. Presented a lovely outline. Coat in A1 condition, moved out well and a confident showman. Won this class with a bit to spare.  2; Kelleher’s Sun Dance, 14 mth clear wheaten. Very nicely made throughout which shows in his free movement, when he settles. Has a nice headpiece with a good expression and a good bite with nice big teeth. I’m sure with a bit more ring training this dog could do very well. 3; Thompson’s Castleline Jackard.

PGD. 6,  1; Berrecloth’s Sybster Spring time, nicely made grey br. Nice masculine head  with good shaped eye. Good in front, firm topline and a nice steady shower. In excellent coat, a good honest cairn with nothing exaggerated at all. In the class he moved out very well but in the challenge he was throwing his front. 2; Smith’s Rocasovale Good Luck Charm, dark red br. Up to size for me but a well made dog has improved since I judged him last. Nicely made head, moved and showed steadily. In excellent coat and condition. 3; Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Chipmunk.

LD. 6,  1;RCC Middlehurst’s Cannwood As If By Magic to Starveren JW, very striking light red br. Has come on so well since I judged him as a puppy, not surprised he has gained his crown so quickly. Has a beautiful head with the keenest of expressions. Good clean front and shoulder, excellent ribbing. Presents a lovely outline. Shown in first class coat and condition. A super showman who moves out well. He was moving a shade close behind today so had to settle for the RCC. 2; Confue’s Anjofra Bang on the Door, deep clear red. Different type to 1st made on bigger lines. His lack of markings makes him look plain. He is probably a dog that needs to be gone over to be appreciated. He has a nice head and eye and is generally well put together. I would prefer a bit more texture to his coat though. Can give his handler a hard time and obviously has a mind of his own. 3; Thompson’s Castleline Prince Harry.

OD. 4  1;CC Weinbergers Correnie Altissimo, I have always liked this dog and gave him the RCC last time I judged and said then he needed more animation, well today he had it. I think he was looking the best I have ever seen him today and is obviously improving with age. Has a lovely head and expression. Good neck, shoulder and forearm with a firm topline. Carrying just the right amount of weight and in super coat. Moved and showed steadily. Hope he gets his crowning CC soon. 2; Hogarty’s Ch./ Ir Ch. Cadagio As Good As It Gets, another top class male, a real stallion of a dog. Good in head and keen expression, very well balanced and good angulations both ends which shows in his free movement. Today he was quite short of coat which detracted from the overall picture. 3; Wall’s Shearwater Cae De Sonhas.

Veteran D/B. No entries.

MPB. 7, 1; Towers’ Deneland Sparkler, 6 mth wheaten br. A real baby but very confident too. Well developed head for age with good bite and nicely shaped eye. Good shoulder and straight front, firm topline. Coat and condition just right. Moved well and showed with confidence. A shade proud of her tail hopefully that settles down. 2; Towers’ Deneland Catherine, litter sister to class winner and similar remarks apply to this bitch as well. Another nice puppy, not as confident as her sister and not holding topline  as well on the move either. 3; Radford’s Skimmerton Touch of Magic.

PB. 8,   1; BP Hewitt’s Littleacorn Keep in Touch, 10mth clear wheaten. Lovely feminine girl, good head with deep stop nicely shaped eye giving good expression. Just right for size. Good neck, shoulder and front. Well ribbed , good angulations both ends. Shown in a full puppy coat of correct texture. Moved out well , showed well in her class but was flagging a bit in the puppy challenge. 2; Radford’s Skimmerton Gold Dust, light red br of 7mths so giving a bit away in this class. Has a neat head, good shape to her eye but would prefer it a shade darker. Nicely made bitch, nice straight front, good topline and well bodied. Moved well when she settled. 3; Confue’s Anjofra Queen of Tarts.

JB.  10(1abs)  1;RCC Catto’s Birselaw It’s My Moment, 15mth light red. Most feminine well balanced head, correct eye colour and shape giving that true cairn expression. Just right for size, presented a lovely outline. Well ribbed, good angulations. Coat and condition just right. Moved out very well and a real showgirl. Pushed her older sister hard for the CC, sure she will be collecting them herself very soon. 2; Weinbergers Correnie Irresistible, almost 18mth wheaten br. Another truly feminine girl, as big as I would want. Well proportioned head, nice eye. Good flowing lines. A wilful girl giving her handler a hard time When she settled and moved she did it very well, very showy. 3; Hewitt’s Littleacorn Tulin.

PGB. 15(8abs)  1; Weinbergers Correnie Felicia, Up to size clear wheaten. Very feminine, beautiful head with good bite. Good neck, shoulders and topline, tail well set. Lovely outline. Moved out well when she settled to it. Confident shower. 2; Parker-Tuckers Uniquecottage Gold Tarka. Nicely put together red br. Good in neck and shoulder. In good coat and well conditioned. Moved out well. Preferred the head and expression of class winner. 3; Weaver’s Copseleaze Hattie.

LB. 9(2 abs)  1;CC & BOB Catto’s Birselaw Special Moment. Another truly feminine bitch from this kennel, best head of the day. Just right for size, keenest of expressions. Put together so well. Moved out and showed well. Again shown in a good full jacket in first class condition. So very similar to her younger sister who won JB. Gave her the RCC last time I judged and was pleased to give her the big green card today. 2; Poiles Kedvaiy Pascali, slightly bigger made clear red bitch but still very feminine. Beautiful head with melting expression. Excellent shoulder and front, firm topline and well angulated behind. Coat just right and a super showgirl who never lets her handler down. Would have liked a bit more body condition on her today though. 3; Hooton’s Penticharm Deep Secret.

OB. 6(2abs)  1; Parker-Tuckers Uniquecottage Glengettie. Lovely type of bitch, well made throughout, very good in front, well bodied. Nice in head eye and bite, would prefer her a shade more feminine though. Outgoing girl and moves out well. 2; Smee’s Oudenarde Belle Amour, very feminine dark grey br. Good angulations both ends. In very good coat and condition, very showy bitch on her toes all the time, not holding her topline on the move today though. 3; Dolans Glenrood Magic Berry.
