CAIRN TERRIERS

I enjoyed my first championship judging appointment and thank the sporting exhibitors who braved the elements and the mud to show under me.  I thought the overall quality was good and was particularly pleased to see so many exhibits with good heads.  Some coats were “in between” and some could have done with a bit more tidying, but I don’t expect the weather conditions in the week leading up to the show helped in that department.  Temperaments too were excellent.  On the downside, we seem to have some poor fronts in the breed at present with insufficient upper arm with the consequent lack of ability to reach well forward on the move, and some lack propulsion from the rear.  I was, however, very pleased with the quality of my final line-ups.

MPD (3)

1.                    Weinberger’s Correnie Mister Bo-Jangles.  Well balanced 7 month old wheaten brindle of nice size.  Good head and expression, neat well-placed ears, correct mouth.  Good front, nice outline.  Moved well front and rear and showed well.  Very promising.

2.                    Peers’s Tweedisle Troublemaker.  Wheaten, with good harsh coat, bigger made than 1 but well proportioned.  Moved well.  He still has a lot of maturing to do but at only just 6 months there is plenty of time.

3.             Sharpamatt the Party’s Here

PD (5, 2a)

1.                 Inett, Harrison & Bambridge’s Wyeafon Pure Fiction at Carradine.  Well grown red brindle with lovely head and expression.  Good spring and depth of rib, though a little long-cast.  Profuse coat.  Moved well.

2.                 Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Spellbinder.  Wheaten, higher in the leg than 1.  Nice head, good mouth.  Topline and tailset OK.  Would like more depth in chest.  Coat not at its best today.  Moved well behind.

3.                Ough’s Ocedar Sundance

JD (5)

There was very little to separate the first two in this class

1.                    Shopland’s Cherrycrack Mack the Knife.  Wheaten, well up to size but in proportion.  Very nice head and expression, good mouth.  Excellent front, good layback of shoulder, level topline, well angulated rear.  Good quality coat.  Moved well.

2.                    Thomas & Hooton’s Rasken’s Romping Playboy (Imp).  Another very nice dog, in full   good-quality grey coat.  Lovely head, good spring and depth of rib, level topline, correctly angulated rear.  Thought he didn’t move quite as well in front as 1 today, but one to watch for the future.

3.                   Copseleaze Corn Cracker

ND (2,1a)

1.                    Ough’s Ocedar Sundance.  9 month old wheaten with good quality coat coming in.  Correct mouth, good dark eye.  Moved OK.  Needs time to mature.

PGD (3,1a)

1.                    Poile’s Kedvaiy Harlequin.  Beautifully balanced, very attractive red with super head and expression.  Dark eye, good mouth, very good front, good spring and depth of rib, in excellent coat and condition.

2.                    Cox’s Jostmaro Moonlight of Coxellot.  Dark brindle with good harsh coat.  Good head, well sprung ribs, well muscled hind quarters.  Moved OK behind and covered the ground well.  Not a very enthusiastic showman!

LD (4,1a)

1.                    Ehrenberg’s Carradine Master Tigger.  Wheaten of desirable medium size, with the most lovely head and true Cairn expressive dark hazel eyes.  Well placed neat dark ears.  Correct front with sufficient upper arm, good reach of neck and layback of shoulders, level topline, correct tail set and carriage.  Strong hindquarters.  In good coat and hard condition.  Best mover of the day with plenty of drive from the rear.  CC & BOB.  I thought he acquitted himself so well in the group, a good ambassador for the breed.

2.             Brown’s Cruzo Gold Charmer.    Well proportioned red.  Good head, dark eye, correct mouth, well-constructed front, good topline, good quality coat.  His front movement a little stilted today and would have preferred a bit more drive from behind.

3.                   West’s Junetta Ludycrous

OD (2)

1.                    Middlehurst’s Ch Cannwood As If By Magic to Starveren JW.   I appreciated the opportunity to go over this well known dog, and having done so I can understand why he has won so much.  He is so well balanced and presents a beautiful outline.  He has a good head if perhaps not quite as masculine as I would like, plenty of neck flowing into well laid back clean shoulders, good depth and spring of rib, completely level topline and correct tailset, good rear angulation, and presented in quality coat and in such good condition.  He moved well today and pressed hard for the top honours.  A lovely dog, but for me I would just like to see him a little more “active, game and hardy.”  RCC

2.                    Berrecloth’s Ch Sybster Spring Time ShCM.  Silver-grey masculine dog, well up to size.  Beautiful typical Cairn head, excellent stop giving that true Cairn expression.  Level topline, good angulation, well muscled.  Presented in full quality coat and top condition.  Unfortunately, he didn’t get his act together today and was uncooperative with his handler which made his movement very erratic.

MPB (5,1a)

1.                    Poile’s Kedvaiy Ruby Tuesday.  Very appealing feminine red.  Only just 6 months old but already a show girl.  Well shaped head with feminine expression.  Lovely level topline and good tail set and carriage.  Good quality coat.  Moved well.  BP

2.                    Weinberger’s Correnie Showtime.  Litter sister to the MPD winner and another quality puppy.  Wheaten brindle with good coat.  Attractive head , correct mouth, good length of back, strong hindquarters.  There was little to choose between these two lovely puppies.

3.                   Confues’ Anjofra Tango Charlie

PB ((6,2a)

1.                    Bradshaw’s Newfield Heather Magic.  Well balanced red brindle with lovely outline.  Nicely shaped attractive head, good expression.  Good  quality coat which was well presented.  Movement slightly erratic but, with her attributes, good enough to win her first place.

2.                    Shannon, Storr & Culliford’s Brenndarcy Be Bop Deluxe.  Well made wheaten in quality coat which was a little in need of tidying.  Good mouth, good length of neck and layback of shoulders.  Strong hindquarters.  Moved OK

3.                   Inett’s Carradine Magic Star

JB (10,3a)

1.                    Oldale’s Cranae New Dawn.  This bitch caught my eye whenever she came into the ring.  Well made red with lovely  head, neat ears, dark eye, good stop.  Very good bone.  Correct front, good spring and depth of rib. .  Level topline, tail well set on.  Good rear angulation.  On the move she covered the ground so well.  RCC

2.                    Thomas’s Tycadno Wishing on a Star.  Another very nice bitch.  Wheaten with the desirable dark points.  Well shaped, well furnished head, good mouth.  Good body proportions.  Quality coat.  Moved and showed well.

3.                   Matthews’ Birselaw Moment of Joy at Sharpamatt

NB (2,1a)

1.                    Fielder’s Berrybone Surprise Delight.  Feminine wheaten brindle with nice head, good expression with dark eye.  Good quality new coat coming .  Moved well coming and going.

PGB (18,4a)

1.                    Moseley’s Spawyche Elizabethan Ruby.  Most attractive spirited grey brindle of desirable moderate size.  Very pretty feminine head with cheeky expression.  Level topline, good tailset.  She was determined to give her handler a bad time when on the move, but demonstrated her qualities enough to win this good class.

2.                    Berrecloth’s Sybster Spring into Summer.  Very nice Cairn type.  Grey brindle with dark points, bigger made than 1.  Very well presented in good quality coat.  Lovely head and expression, good mouth, good spring of rib, level topline.  Moved well.

3.                   Phillips’ Jaeva en Vogue

LB (14,2a)

1.                    Catto’s Birselaw It’s My Moment.  Wheaten brindle with lovely outline.  Beautiful head with dark mask, deep stop.  Good body  -  deep, well-sprung ribs.  Excellent front.  Quality coat.  Movement good.  In the challenge she was a little reluctant and had lost a bit of her sparkle.

2.                    Osborns’ Tweslam Kalamazoo.  Different type from 1 but so attractive too.  Very well balanced red brindle.   Another with a lovely head with dark mask.  Very nice size.  Good topline and tailset and moved well coming and going.  Just lost out to 1 in the class for ring presence today.

3.                   Pett’s Cannwood Kasta Spell at Doonrae

OB (3,1a)

1.                    Smee’s Oudenarde Belle Amour.  A really quality  bitch with a truly “fearless and gay disposition”.  Well balanced dark grey, nice size, full of personality.  Good head, correct colour of dark eye, and a truly mischievous expression.  Lovely outline with good body proportions, excellent front assembly, moved well, despite not being an easy girl to handle. She has a mind of her own!  But so full of that true Cairn spirit.  Delighted to award her the CC.

2.                    Shopland’s Cherrycrack Chasing Aimee.  Well proportioned grey , bigger made than 1 but another very nice bitch.   Lovely  head and expression, good rib, straight topline, strong hindquarters.  Quality coat.  Moved very well.
