National Terrier – Cairn Terriers

It was an honour to be invited to judge such a prestigious show and I thank the exhibitors for a super entry with minimal absentees, my overall impression of the Cairns on show was that the quality obviously lies in the bitches as has been for many years now. Heads have been my main concern for some time, lack of stop, light and round eyes, long muzzles, no breadth of skull between the ears. But today as if to put the icing on the cake I lost count of the amount of incorrect mouths, I can forgive an adult a missing or broken tooth but I had many in the top classes as well as the puppies who had incorrect bite and this reflected in my placings, movement on the whole could be better, but I felt coat quality, presentation and handling had much improved, although it should be remembered that a Cairn should be shown on a loose lead. I was delighted with my final line ups and my winners were the type of Cairn I love active, free in movement and above all else happy.

MPD (6)

  1. Peers’ Tweedisle Piper Boy. Wheaten, mature and up to size, nice head, good mouth and was shown in good coat. Movement needs to settle but has plenty of time
  2. Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Sooty Bear. Brindle, not the head of Piper Boy but he is well made and has lovely bone plus a super coat, hope he grows on, lovely temperament.
  3. Lifton’s Glenrood Storm Keeper At Liffycairn

PD (5)

  1. Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Spellbinder. Wheaten, nice head, dark eye, good mouth, nice type who moves well behind but when excited was a little erratic in front but he showed well in a good jacket of quality.
  2. Cameron’s Robb Ruadh. Red, not the maturity of one, good neck and shoulders, moved well when settled and has a quality coat
  3. Longdin’s Wellingley What Magic

JD (5,1a)

  1. Thomas & Hooton’s Rasken’s Romping Playboy Imp taf. Took my eye when he came into the ring, a lovely type of dog with a nice head and expression. Was shown in fantastic coat and in super condition, obviously needs time to mature, not so positive in front today but a quality dog.
  2. Shopland’s Mack the Knife. Another lovely youngster. Nice head, good mouth, moved and showed well, needs his new coat, not quite the ring presence of 1.
  3. Peers’ Tweedisle Sweet Talking Boy

ND (1)

  1. Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Sooty Bear.

UGD (5,2a)

  1. Poile’s Kedvaiy Harlequin. Smashing youngster, red brindle, very well balanced, lovely neck and shoulders, level topline, good tailset, moved very well behind and with drive. He has a nice head and is maturing well, tended to move a little wide in front on a tight lead but better on a loose lead. Very animated and showed all out to which won him the RCC in illustrious company.
  2. Watson’s Fieldron William Wallace. Another nice dog of good type. Nice head, good mouth, lovely front, level topline, moved with drive, he has a quality coat and showed well.
  3. Ough’s Ocedor Zephyr

GD (2)

  1. Braybrook’s Cloverbrook Play The Game. Wheaten with dark points, nice head, good mouth. He was in good coat and was well presented, but was too heavy, this affected his movement and made him lethargic which was a pity.
  2. Ough’s Ocedor Zephyr. Red, rather immature, but he showed very well and has a quality coat, his tailset is a little high and spoilt his outline.

PGD (7)

1. Hooton’s Penticharm Prince Charming. This young man is very well put together and is maturing well, nice type of head, moves with drive on good legs and feet, was shown in good coat, needs time.

  1. Thompsons’ Casleline Jackard. Similar to one in many ways, probably a more accomplished showman but 1 had the edge in rear movement and overall balance.
  2. Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Little Tyke

LD  (9,2a)

1.Evans’ Birselaw Billy The Kid Of Kapplegill. An old favourite of mine, brindle with a lovely head and expression, super coat and condition, moved ok in front but a little close behind. Lost all interest in the challenge but I have now come to expect that, a smashing Cairn.

2.Brown’s Cruzo Gold Charmer. Different type to 1, upstanding dog of quality, very well put together, well balanced, nice head, super mouth. Moves very well especially on a loose lead. It was a pity he didn’t put more into his showing as he would been there or thereabouts.

3.Fairweather’s Ock Ross I’m the Boss

OD (5,2a)

1.Berrecloth’s Ch. Sybster Springtime. Active game and hardy, this dog screams breed type with his fantastic head and expression, his rugged coat of correct length was in super condition, well muscled he moved with drive. Yes he is a little wide in front and when sparring next to another male Cairn he is a little proud of his tail, but his many virtues and sparkling personality far outweigh any negatives, absolutely delighted to award him the CC. Lovely Cairn!

2.Middlehurst’s Ch. Cannwood As If By Magic To Starveren. I have long admired this boy since he was a puppy, having awarded him the RCC last time I judged. He moved better in front than 1 but doesn’t have the head I was looking for, he has a super coat and condition but wasn’t putting enough into his showing, just doing enough and no more. And this is why Harlequin pipped him for the RCC. Never the less he is still a top quality dog.

     3. Short’s Glenchess  Black Tie

MPB (9)

  1. Short’s Glenchess Vivienne Westwood. A lovely youngster who is very well put together. Super head and expression, good neck & shoulders , level topline, tail on top, moved very well on good legs & feet, shown in tip top condition and has attitude. One for the future. Best puppy
  2. Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Lemoncello. Different type to 1, but again full of quality, lovely head with varminty expression, good neck and shoulders , not as mature in body as 1 or as self assured, but she can move fore and aft, and with time and patience hopefully will do well.
  3. Dolan’s Glenrood Cascade

PB (14,3a)

  1. Strickland’s Tanteazle Trojan Maid. Brindle, lovely headed youngster, good mouth, moved with drive and showed with enthusiasm, she is very well balanced, good size and a lovely type. With a little luck could have a good career.
  2. Bradshaw’s Newfield Heather Magic. Red brindle so very feminine, lovely shape and balance. Moved with drive and was presented and handled to advantage. Hope she grows on a little. Promising.
  3. Percy’s Winetta Who’s That Girl

JB (7)

  1. Thomas’ Tycadno Wishing On A Star. Wheaten brindle with a lovely head and expression, very well put together. She is starting to mature and with time should be challenging for top honours, moves with drive and shown in good coat of quality. Lovely type.
  2. Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Heidi Claire. Although she didn’t take my eye when moving around the ring, she certainly impresses on the table. Very well balanced, lovely type of head, moves very soundly. Was shown in full coat. Will always command a second look.
  3. Marshall’s Strathgarten Kenmillefore Lady Marmalade

NB (3)

  1. Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Polly Flinders. Brindle who has a lovely head & expression, moves well behind, not as positive in front, shown in full coat of quality and was in lovely condition. A little ring training would help.
  2. Kinton’s Woodthorpe Rosemary N’Thyme. Not the head of 1. but she has good neck, shoulders & topline, nice coat, moved with drive from the rear, has a happy go lucky temperament .
  3. Shearsmith’s Eborvale Enchantress

UGB(7,1a)

  1. Hewitt’s Littleacorn Keep In Touch. Ultra feminine balanced throughout. I was very taken by this young lady, her movement was effortless, she was animated and showed with enthusiasm, still has some maturing to do, but there is no denying she has real potential,
  2. Confue’s Anjofra Queen Of Tarts. Red brindle, good allround youngster unlucky to meet 1. Nice type of head, well put together. Good quality coat, shows very well. Couldn’t match 1 for movement but has many attributes.
  3. Butterfield’s Camasmor Credence

GB (2)

  1. Kelleher’s Razzle Dazzle Glory. Nice headed bitch, good mouth lovely neck and shoulders. Balanced and moved well, not yet two so plenty of time to mature and develop.
  2. Dolan’s Glenrood Mateus Rose. Very nice bitch in profile. Good depth & spring of rib, balanced, showy and moves fairly well. Presentation first class, unfortunately not the type of head I would expect from this kennel. Therefore paid the price.

PGB(12,2a)

  1. Mears’ Glenmear Marcuella. Lovely head, dark eye of correct shape, good neck & shoulders, deep well sprung ribs, level topline, good tailset presented in good coat of excellent quality, moved with drive. Showed all out to win this class, but alas in the challenge she had had enough, but time is on her side, nice cairn.
  2. Hooton’s Penticharm Caribbean Queen. Is a different type to Marcuella but many, if not all my remarks apply. Lacked the maturity, but if she turns out to be half as good as her famous and beautiful mother, then she will do for me. A real prospect, put down to perfection.
  3. Cameron’s Stryveling Meg Merrilees

LB (13,2a)

  1. Catto’s Birselaw It’s My Moment. “Enden Kath” (cats face) to have the true type of head the Cairn must posses this, and this young lady certainly does, lovely dark eye with lashes, super stop & mouth, she is very well balanced, deep well sprung ribs, level topline, good quarters moves well. Not as extrovert as 2 but no mistaking a real quality Cairn with whom I was delighted to award the CC & BOB
  2. Petts’ Cannwood Kasta Spell At Doonrae. Another from the top drawer, who will surely gain her title soon, she has everything that is required, I was splitting hairs with one and was delighted to have the opportunity to judge such a lovely bitch. RCC, her owners & breeders must be proud of her.
  3. Firth & Jones’ Cairngold Cedar

OB (8)

  1. Ward’s Vanajam Piewacket. Brindle, lovely dark eye, slightly longer cast than two, but she is a nice size, balanced, moves well on good legs & feet was in lovely order and showed very well, was so unlucky to meet the Limit bitches who were on top form.
  2. Smee’s Oudenarde Belle Amour. Very nice headed bitch who was close up to Piewacket, she was also presented in good order and showed very well, not quite as positive in front but drives from behind, very close decision
  3. Dolan’s Ch. Glenrood Magic Solitaire
