Wot Dogs?
Three Counties
It is four years since I judged the breed, and today, I enjoyed my task immensely. With entry fees as they are one needs to ensure the exhibit is in tiptop condition. There are some very good dogs and bitches being shown, so competition is strong.
I may be biased but there is something about the grey and the dark brindles character and type. Typical Cairn. Having said that, a good red can hold it’s own. There were some beautiful Cairn heads. Eyes give the expression, a round eye is alien. Lack of furnishings makes the head snipy. Fronts were difficult. Some had too much hair on the legs, making for a stuffy look, some were plaiting. Regarding hind action, it was difficult to find some that were not walking close behind. Both actions need careful thought when breeding. Coats on the whole were excellent for the time of year.
Tail carriage good, mouths (Apart from a couple) excellent, with clean teeth. Temperaments pleased to say, excellent, some had excellent spring of rib and brisket, some sadly lacking this essential. The B.O.B. winner evoked memories of the breed as it was years ago.
Blencathra, Vinovium and Oudenarde. The future looks good!
Jean Hudson
Dog C.C. Middlehurst’s Ch. Cannwood As If By Magic To Starveren. Headed a class of excellent dogs. Good coated brindle with a typical Cairn head. Excellent mouth, correct eye, ear placement good. Level topline, good tail set, good lay back of shoulders into well sprung ribs. Good bend of stifle, can see why he has won so well.
Bitch C.C. & B.O.B. Smee’s Oudenarde Belle Amour. Beautiful dark bitch in excellent coat. Very feminine head, mouth, eye and ear placement excellent. Well bodied, level topline, good tailset. Was naughty on the move, but did settle enough to win the class with honour.
