Cairn Terriers.
It is just under 2 years since I last judged the breed, so many of the dogs were new to me. I had some very nice Cairns to go over and in the bitch classes in particular I could have done with more than one red card in some classes. I hear people commenting on size in cairns and yes it is something we have to watch. But I would have to say that my biggest worry is that short, upright forearms seem to be becoming the norm, as opposed to the exception in the breed and resulted in some very poor front movement. Poor muscle tone is still also very evident. No matter how well made a dog is without the proper exercise and muscle tone it won’t move right either. Mouths were good with only one or two suspect or incorrect ones.
MPD(3). 1; Inett & Dolans, Glenrood Ice Man. Wheaten of 6mth and still very much a baby. Presented a lovely outline with a nicely made head and correct eye for shape and colour. Has good angulations front and back, which allowed him to move very freely. Topline a little bouncy at this stage but has time to firm up. Shown in a good puppy coat and spot on for condition. Just need to gain a bit more confidence showing wise but time is on his side. 2; Shorts, Glenchess All In The Stars. Almost 9mths grey brindle. Bigger rangier type of puppy, but still with a balanced outline. Quite short of coat at the moment that just adds to his leggyness! Has a nicely balanced head that looks plain through lack of furnishings. But has a good expression and lovely bite. Again is well angulated both ends and moved with reach and drive in profile but front needs to tighten a little. Confident showman. 3; Peers, Tweedisle The Good Guy.
PD(2). 1; Smiths, Rocasovale Razzle Dazzle, 9 mth wheaten brindle. Up to size but presents a balanced outline. Nice headpiece with correct eye and good bite. Good reach of neck with well angulated shoulder and fore arm. Nicely ribbed and firm topline. When he eventually settled and cooperated with his handler he moved out very nicely. 2; Smee’s, Malmay King Of The Road, 9mth light grey brindle. OK in head, eye good for shape and colour. Head looking plain due to lack of furnishings. Has a good reach of neck and a good spring of rib. Shoulder ok but a bit upright in fore arm. Quite short of coat but what was there was of good texture. Steady showman.
JD(7, 1abs). 1; Cattos, Birselaw Daydream Believer. Wheaten brindle that excels in head, with correct eye shape and colour that gives that true cairn expression. Very good angulations both ends which allowed him to move out well. In lovely coat and condition. Would prefer him a shade longer in loin.
2; Stephinsons, Twohoots Barnabas. Lovely clear wheaten, again with a well made head and correct eye and expression. Presented a well balanced outline. Good spring of rib and in excellent coat and condition. Moved out well in profile but not as positive in front as class winner and needs a bit more animation. 3; Inett & Heidecker’s Hydecastle Ozzy Oswald
ND(2, 2abs).
PGD(7). 1; Harrison & Inetts, Glenchess Gabriel Over Carradine. Nicely made eye catching red. Good headpiece with well shaped eye and good bite. Nice length of neck into well laid shoulder. Good rib and nicely angulated behind. Shown in a good full coat and hard condition. Very free moving but a shade wide in front. Steady showman. 2; Graingers, Devil In Disguise. Another lovely dog with an excellent head and expression. Very good in shoulder and forearm, well sprung rib and in A1 coat & condition. Nice sound mover and steady showman. Close decision. 3; Cameron’s Stryveling Robb Ruadh
LD(6). 1; Poiles, Kedvaiy Harlequin. Upstanding red brindle, all male. Not seen this dog for awhile and he has matured very nicely. Super head with most intense expression. Good length of neck and firm topline. Excels in shoulder and forearm and is well angulated behind. Very free movement and covered the ground with ease. In super coat and condition and an accomplished showman. Pleased to award him his 3rd CC.
2; Shoplands, Cherrycrack Mack The Knife. Nicely made grey brindle. Nice masculine head with correct shaped eye, which again gives a true cairn expression. Good in front, presents a balanced outline and a nice steady shower. In excellent coat and condition. Topline not quite as firm as class winner on the move but still a lovely dog who pushed very hard for the class. RCC. 3; Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Spellbinder
OD(3). 1; Wentzels, Ch Glenmore Top Gun. Nicely balanced wheaten. Well made head with a deep stop and good bite. Not quite the expression I was looking for though. Is a well made dog throughout with good angulations both ends and moves very freely. Presented, as usual, to perfection in hard muscular condition and is a good showman. 2; Peers, Tweedisle Sweet Talking Guy. Dark grey brindle, who presents a nice outline. Well made head with a dark eye and correct bite. Good neck into well laid shoulder and firm topline. Carrying just the right amount of weight and in good coat. Moves well in profile but a bit close behind. 3; Ehrenberg’s, Ch Carradine Master Tigger.
MPB(8,1abs) 1; Weinberger’s Correnie Anything Goes. 8mth, dark grey brindle. Very eye catching with a lovely balanced outline. Beautiful feminine head with lovely expression. Well put together with good angulations both ends, firm topline and well set tail. In good condition and lovely coat. Moved so freely and soundly for a baby and a confident showgirl. BP. 2; Waugh’s Tribannon Hermione. Clear wheaten, 7 mths and still very much a baby, Excels in head with a deep stop and beautiful feminine expression. Best of fronts with a super forearm. Well ribbed and good back end. Moved with such freedom and drive. Shown in a full puppy coat. Just needs to gain more confidence showing, very nice puppy. 3; Peers’ Tweedisle The Golden Touch.
PB(5,1abs) 1; Dolan’s Glenrood Forever Topps Naf. Light red, 6mths. Nicely balanced head, with a nice eye shape and colour. Nice reach of neck and firm topline. Well ribbed and nicely angulated behind. In good coat and A1 condition. Moved very well and showed with confidence. 2; Waugh’s Tribannon Arabella. 7mth wheaten, another from this kennel with a beautiful head that has the deepest of stops and correct expression, so feminine. Presents a lovely balanced outline and is very well put together front and back. Moved with real freedom and drive, just needs more time to gain her confidence in showing. 3; Smee’s Malmay Sky's The Limit.
JB(12,3abs) 1; Templeton’s Larchlea Knot To Be Mist. This beautiful dark grey brindle caught my eye as soon as she walking in the ring. So feminine in outlook and presents a truly balanced outline. Best of heads with such an intense expression that can only be a Cairn. Good reach of neck into well angulated front and firmest of toplines and tail bang on top. Coat in A1 condition and if anyone wants to know what hard muscular condition is ask to go over this bitch. This bitch out moved all in her class moving with such drive and freedom. A shade close behind but that could not detract from all her virtues. Pleased to award her the CC & BOB. 2; Thompsons Castleline Tiger Lily. Lovely wheaten bitch with a beautiful feminine head and expression. Very nicely put together with a well laid shoulder, well sprung rib and good angulations behind. In a good full coat that was presented very well. Moved very soundly just not showing with much enthusiasm. 3; Osborn’s Tweslam Bonne Annee.
NB(2,1abs) 1; Hewitt’s Correnie Jazz Talk At Littleacorn. Light grey brindle with a well made head and good expression. Good neck with a well angulated shoulder and forearm. Good spring of rib and firm topline. Good texture to coat but is on the blow. Moved out well and showed with confidence.
PGB(7,2abs) 1; Poile’s Kedvaiy Can-Can. Lovely clear red feminine bitch. Beautiful head with a deep stop, eye a little round which spoilt her expression somewhat. Another with a good neck, shoulder and forearm. Firm topline and nicely ribbed. Coat in good order. Very sound movement and a confident showgirl. 2; Shannon, Storr & Culliford’s Brenndarcy Be Bop Deluxe. Lovely wheaten who pushed so hard for the class. Very feminine in outlook with a lovely well balanced head and good angulations both ends. Shown in a full coat in good order. Moved well with good reach but not holding her topline as well on the move as class winner. 3; Oldale’s Cranae New Dawn.
LB(9,4abs) 1; Catto’s Birselaw Now Is The Moment. Very feminine wheaten brindle with a good balanced outline. As you expect from this kennel she has a very well made head, with a deep stop and beautiful expression. Excels in shoulder and forearm, firm topline and good rib. Shown in a good full coat and firm condition. Covered the ground well on the move and shows to perfection. RCC. 2; Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Heidi Claire. Grey brindle who again presents a nice balanced outline. Nicely made head with a good bite but not the intensity of expression of the class winner. So well put together which shows in her free and effortless movement, nicely ribbed and shown in a full coat. Not showing as well as the class winner. 3; Inett’s Carradine Magic Star.
OB(4,1abs) 1; Burgin’s Curtisey Foreign Affair At Carradine. Grey brindle with a nicely made head and good expression. Good neck and firm topline. Nicely angulated both ends which showed in her free movement, that won her this class. In lovely coat and condition, just starting to look a little heavy as she gets older. 2; Petts’ Cannwood Kasta Spell At Doonrae. Nicely balanced dark grey brindle. Well made head and keen expression. Good neck and shoulder but a shade upright in forearm. Firm topline and well ribbed. Shown in good coat and condition. Moved nicely in profile but showing let her down in the class. 3; Osborn’s Tweslam Izzy Wizzy Get Bizzy.
