Show Report City of Birmingham, 1st September,

CAIRN TERRIER

I had a splendid day judging Cairn Terriers, one of my favourite breeds that I have followed with great interest for more than 30 years and have been fortunate to judge worldwide for many years. My winners pleased me very much but there was also sufficient depth of quality in many classes to make me feel pleased with the overall quality. I was however a little surprised to see quite a few really strong, Westie-type heads and several of the exhibits were well up to size. Many thanks to exhibitors for good sportsmanship and loud applause!

Veteran Dog (2, abs 0): 1. Wall’s Ch Shearwater Cae de Sonhas, very masculine typical fellow with lovely front and excellent coat, strongly made all through with good head, moved and showed with enthusiasm denying his age! 2. Birch’s Ch Kinkim Prinzludy, another very good dog and very masculine all through with excellent coat and showmanship, a little heavier in build than the winner and longer in muzzle, but a very good dog overall enjoying himself in the ring.

Minor Puppy Dog (7, abs 0).1. Peers’ Tweedisle Guy Mannering, very promising grey brindle puppy with lots of potential, excellent overall make& shape, good body and topline, very assertive showman who still needs to settle in front movement, and he is of a shape that I like at this age. 2. Ward’s Vanajam Pop Idol, very similar in make & shape to the winner and another excellent puppy with really good body, front and rear. Heads still needs to develop and topline could have been a little firmer, moved with great enthusiasm and freedom.

3. Waugh’s Tribannon Tip Top

Puppy Dog. No entries.

Junior Dog (7. Abs 0). 1. Waugh’s Tribannon Warlord, dark brindle dog with really good front and he is of the right size. Masculine all through, good head and eye, very good coat. Enthusiastic showman and an easy winner in this class. Perhaps a shade square in outline, but he is still a very good young dog that I liked very much. 2. Watson’s Fieldron I’ve Got News For You, wonderful head and expression with perfectly placed ears, excellent body, tail and topline. Coat past its best today and he could have been more cooperative on the move, but he is a dog that will always command attention with his lovely breed type 3. Edney’s Cherrycrack Poacher

Graduate Dog (3, Abs 0). Difficult class to judge with three very different dogs 1. Saich’s Kiataia Masquerade, red rather finely constructed dog who could be more masculine with better bone and head, but he is well- made and moves with long easy strides. Coat of good texture. 2. Lifton’s Glenrood Stormkeeper at Liffycairn, stronger in build than the winner but too short in body and his somewhat gay tail detracts from overall picture, very good coat and excellent head and expression. Moves OK. 3. Cox’ Jostmaro Shoemaker Coxellot

Post Graduate Dog (4, Abs 0) 1. Peers’ Tweedisle Piper Boy, light wheaten dog with lovely head and expression, excellent front with good shoulders and very good neck. Up to size and he is a little straight behind, but he moves well and carried a very good coat in pristine condition. 2. Birch’s Kinkim Kernul, another good dog with wonderful texture of coat, good front, body and topline, not quite the head of the winner, but he is a splendid dog of lovely type. 3. Soper’s Uniquecottage Ring Plover.

Limit Dog (8, Abs 0). 1. Hooton’s Penticharm Party Knight, top quality pale dog in wonderful bloom presented in very good order. Lovely head and expression, perfect front, neck and shoulders, very good body and hindquarters, thick well placed and well-carried tail and he moved accurately to win the dog CC. 2. Shopland’s Cherrycrack Mack the Knife, very typical Cairn of excellent overall make & shape and he exudes breed type, wonderful coat texture, typical head and front, good body, front movement not so positive, good showman. 3. Shann & Storr’s Brenndarcy Spellbinder.

Open Dog (5, Abs 1) 1. Thomas & Hooton’s Ch Rasken’s Romping Playboy, grey brindle dog with outstanding movement and wonderful coat, very good front, rear and body and he has a masculine head. Not a small dog and I would not like him stronger in build, but his overall quality made him win the res CC. 2. Middlehurst’s Ch Cannwood As If By Magic to Starveren, another quality dog with lovely head and he is of the size I like, very good body, topline, tail and rear, rather short of coat on the day and not as good in front as the winner. Showed very well. 3. Peers’ Tweedisle Sweet Talking Guy.

Veteran Bitch (2, Abs 1). 1. Owen’s Caldwell Chelsey, lovely head and very good coat and she is so very feminine all through, appeared a little sluggish today making her look a little short on the legs , short in neck, lovely temperament.

Minor Puppy Bitch (5, Abs 2) 1. Peers’ Tweedisle Dolly Daydream, this is a beautifully constructed puppy with ideal proportions, very good head for age, perfect front neck and shoulders, good body, tail and hindquarters. Moved well for age, short of coat today, but she could still no be denied Best Puppy. 2. Osborn’s Tweslam Scarlet Slippers, another very feminine puppy with excellent outline, pleasing head, coat, body and rear, not the front of the winner and she stands a little lower on the legs than Dolly Daydream, excellent temperament and good movement. 3. Confue’s Anjofra Me Me Me.

Puppy Bitch (4, Abs 1) 1. Thompson’s Castleline Bonnie, feminine wheaten puppy of lovely type with good front, coat and body, very good movement, a little long in muzzle, dark eye and happy outgoing temperament. 2. Dolan’s Glenrood Forever Popsy, very sound feminine puppy showing perfectly for one so young, good head, ears need to settle, a shade shorter in back than the winner. 3. Short’s Glenchess Cut the Mustard.

Junior Bitch (13, Abs 6).1.Clarke’s Conundrum Sweeter For Me for Lentrica, beautiful head with lovely varminty expression, very good front, neck and shoulders, excellent body and topline. Easy mover, rather short of coat today. 2. Brown’s Bencana Tickle Pink, similar type to above with equally good head and expression, fails a little in front, but she is of lovely overall make & shape and very typical all through. Good showgirl. 3. Thompson’s Castleline Tiger Lily.

Graduate Bitch (, Abs 2) 1. Robinson’s Cruzo Brisk Breeze, feminine bitch shown in a very full coat, good front and body, not so pleasing in expression and her tail is rather gay. Good size and she moved OK. 2. Lifton’s Glenrood Tanzanite Magic at Liffycairn, good head and expression, a little straight in shoulders making her appear rather stuffy and boxy in outline, could have done with more coat, excellent temperament.

Post Graduate Bitch (9, Abs 2). 1. Marshall’s Strathgarten Kenmillfore Lady Marmalade, delightful bitch with wonderful head, eye and expression, good body, front and rear, excellent coat and condition, sound mover, A bitch I liked a lot and she pressed hard in the bitch challenge. 2. Ward’s Vanajam Klairvoyant, another very typical good bitch in good coat and condition, really good movement, not so pleasing in head and expression, but a very good bitch of lovely type. 3. Oldale’s Cranae New Dawn.

Limit Bitch (9, Abs 4).Excellent class of quality bitches.1. Percy’s Winetta Who’s That Girl,  really lovely bitch of beautiful type presented in hard muscular condition and with a very good straight coat in full bloom, perfect front, neck and shoulders, very good head and expression, ideal body proportions, good tail and hindquarters, easy fluid mover showing and standing freely, a true unexaggerated Cairnterrier whom I was delighted to award the bitch CC and BOB. 2. Robinson’s Cruzo Cinderella, this is a bitch that I also liked a lot, she teems with breed type and has that wonderful slightly naughty Cairn appeal about her, good head legs and feet, excellent topline, tail, movement and rear, Just lost out a little in coat condition to the winner, but a lovely bitch. Res. CC. 3. Poile’s Kedvaiy Can-Can.

Open Bitch (5, Abs 1) Rather surprisingly, not a very strong class with great variation in type and quality.1. Keeves’ Seveek Chasing Dreams, this bitch has to be handled to be fully appreciated. She has a lovely head, good front, body and rear and she is of lovely size. Coat was on the blow and could have been presented in better condition, but her many qualities outshone this. Happy showgirl, would have been a serious contender in the bitch challenge had her coat been in better condition. 2. Hooton’s Penticharm Time to Party, in many ways quite the opposite to Chasing Dreams both in colour and presentation, lovely type, good front, body and rear, short of coat and not so pleasing in eye and expression. Steady mover. 3. Short’s Glenchess Golden Wings.
