Manchester Ch Show 2007 Cairn Terriers
WEB- My first championship show judging was Manchester in 1986 & on that occasion from an entry of 130 dogs there were so many excellent Cairns on view, you could not go far wrong with your decisions. But this Manchester was very much more difficult as depth of quality was just not there. It was pleasing to see a good entry in both puppy classes, as this is the breed future.
I try to look for virtues & not fault judge & I know allowances have to be made on coats both for the time of year & the preparation for Crufts. But it did spoil the picture in many cases. Poor movement cannot be disguised on this indoor surface & I could not believe how terrible it has become – especially the going close behind. Heads with little or no stop & some far to thin Cairns were also a problem.
On the positive side temperament, mouths & tailsets were ok. My top winning males were both bred abroad & this makes me sad as we have always been able to produce quality dogs here & I hope we still can in the future.
Norma R Newton.
