ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

The Southern Cairn Club held a ch show at  Langley, comprising 28 dogs making 144 entries. A well run show with such a friendly atmosphere. Although there were a number of lovely exhibits on show, my main concern was heads; where are the beautiful true Cairn heads going? Unfortunately they were the exception than the rule. The characteristic of the head immediately identifies the Cairn from any other breed. There were too many with narrow skulls, lacking in head furnishing, long in foreface & not enough width of muzzle. One or two had eyes which were of the wrong shape & colour; no Cairn can have the correct expression with such an eye. A minority were slightly 'short' in back; in body they should be of moderate length, well sprung deep ribs, with a strong lithe loin to enable them to turn & work in adverse surroundings or underground. We must always remember that we are the gatekeepers of this beautiful breed & the breeding that we are doing today will affect the breed for generations to come, not just the desired points that we would like but also the faults that are brought in which can take a long time to breed out.

While judging I was looking at the whole picture before me & did not focus on just one particular aspect of the breed. BIS was Cloverbrook Precious Cargo; RBIS, Kedvaiy Can-Can; & BP. Cairngold Candlelight.

MPD (7,1 a) First two similar in type. I Green's Aizenay The Mighty Quinn, gr/br, 6 months, very well constructed puppy, full of promise, lovely expressive head with desired dark eye, impressed with his overall balance, neck, shoulders & spring of rib, in very good coat, showed well & with confidence. BPD; 2 Dolan & Inett's Glenrood Ice Man, wheaten, very assured 7 month old, pleasing head & expression, nice outline, good body & rib, shapely quarters. Would prefer a little better tailset, not quite the hind movement of I as yet; 3 Peer's Tweedisle Guy Mannering.

PD (3,1) I Smee's Malmay King Of The Road, very typy 10 months light gr/br, up to size, liked his overall conformation & balance, ideal body, ribs & topline for age, hindquarters developing nicely, good showman. Needs to tighten up in front but has plenty of time; 2 Kippen's Chezaku Submariner, wheaten of 8 months, smaller mould to I, still very much a pup, needs to strengthen in head with the desired furnishings & gain a little more ring presence. Should improve with maturity.

JD (6,1) I Inett & Heidecker's Hyde Castle Ozzy Oswald, wheaten, not long out of puppy, typical masculine head, lovely expression, good neck & shoulders, level topline, well made body, nicely turned quarters, moved & showed OK; 2 Waugh's Tribannon Warlord, dark gr/br. promising youngster who fits the requirements well throughout at this stage. Not as mature as 1. Pleasing head & expression, good stop, correct ear placement, showed to full advantage, good outline, moved with purpose; 3 Green's Aizenay Toby Or Not Toby.

MD (2) I Edney's Cherrycrack Poacher, red of good type.well furnished expressive head, lovely for size & overall balance, nice weight of bone, sound movement; 2 Burnett's Kilnyard King Of The Castle, light gr/br, touch more length of leg than I. Nicely angulated, well balanced with good outline. Head would be improved with more furnishings. Showed OK.

ND (3) I Saich's Kiataia Masquerade, red, nice for size & balance, good length of leg & depth of rib, level topline, real masculine outlook, moved & showed steadily, just had the edge in head over 2 Burnett's Kilnyard Knave And Rascal, showy light gr/br, nicely made with good reach of neck, level back & correct tail carriage, moved out OK, just needs to settle; 3 Peer's Tweedisle Troublemaker.

UGD (2) I Hawkins' Kilnyard Archie Spangles, wheaten, pleasing head shape, stop & eye colour.good mouth, nice length of back, in full coat. Carried a little too much weight which spoilt his movement; 2 Ough's Ocedar Zephyr, light red, similar in size, head, eye & ear placement OK, good bone. Rather wayward in movement, lost to I in front action.

BD (6,1) I Lifton's Glenrood Stormkeeper at Liffycairn, lot to like about this young light gr/br, nicely put together, liked his head & expression, well laid shoulders, good topline & tailset, nicely angulated quarters, fluent & sound in movement; 2 C Poacher; 3 K Archie Spangles.

GD (3) I Saich's Lindcoly Golden Legend, red of ideal size, pleases in head, lovely expression, enough head furnishings, dark eye, correct earset, good neck, shoulders & body, typical outgoing temperament, moved & showed well; 2 Peer's Tweedisle That Special Son, up to size light red, slightly longer cast than I but balanced. Pleasing head & eye, ample neck, enough depth of rib. Not quite the same freedom of movement as I; 3 Inett & Harrison's Glenchess Gabriel over Carradine.

PGD (9) I Hooton's Penticharm Party Knight, wheaten, very nice youngster for size & type. lovely masculine head that fits the Standard in detail without any exaggerations, eyecatching outline, excellent forehand construction, correct shoulder placement, conformation & balance, good tailset & well turned quarters, good showman, responds well to his handler. RCC; 2 Cameron's Stryveling Robb Ruadh, red, shade smaller than 1 but of nice type & balance, well proportioned head, lovely dark eyes & neat ears. Needs a little more head furnishing to complete the picture. Good body for depth & ribs, well made quarters, moves out well; 3 G Stormkeeper at L.

LD (10,4) I Braybrook's Cloverbrook Precious Cargo, cracking dark gr/br out of the top drawer, excellent ring presence & showmanship, well furnished masculine head. neat well carried ears, dark expressive eyes, good mouth, in complete balance, good shoulder placement, correct depth & spring of rib, strong supple loin with sound hindquarters, well let down hocks, free, agile & assertive movement. CC & BIS; 2 Firth & Jones' Cairngold Jackpot, wheaten, very pleasing head but just lacking a little furnishing to give him the ideal expression. Good reach of neck, well made shoulders, liked his body shape & outline. correct tailset, moves out well,in good coat, showing well; 3 Brown's Cruzo Gold Charmer.

OD (4) I Wentzel's Ch Glenmore's Top Gun, quality wh/br in superb condition, very assertive, conforms well to the Standard, nicely angulated to the forehand, excellent well furnished head, good ear carriage, eye, bite, neck & shoulders, liked his height to length ratio, strong quarters, covered the ground with ease, accomplished showman; 2 Middlehurst's Ch Cannwood As If By Magic to Starveren, dark gr/br, quality male of correct type & size, well balanced, lovely masculine head most typical of the breed, good neck & shoulders, well made body, excels in hind angulation, retained topline on the move. Just preferred showmanship of I but nevertheless a worthy ch; 3 Peer's Tweedisle Sweet Talking Guy.

V 7-9 years (7,2) I Petts' Doonrae Dragoon, dark gr/br male of almost 8 years, liked his overall balance, nice head & earset, in good coat & condition, enjoying his day; 2 Owen's Caldwall Chelsey, wheaten b'rtch of similar age, totally feminine throughout, still in lovely condition; 3 Dolan's Glenrood Magic Pipit.

V 10 & over (5,2) I Parker-Tucker's Uniquecottage Oyster Catcher, red male of almost 11 years, excellent ambassador of the breed, nicely constructed of lovely type, can show some of the youngster how to move, credit to his owner. BV; 2 Birch's Ch Kinkim Prinzludy, lovely dark gr/br male, pleasing head balance, little short of head furnishings. Excels in front, neck & shoulder, pleasing conformation & balance, showed steadily; 3 Ough's Stormy Weather.

MPB(8,1) I Firth & Jones'Cairngold Candlelight, 8 months eyecatching wheaten puppy, progressing along the right lines, totally feminine head, neat well carried ears, dark eye, correct bite, lovely outline & general balance, moves really well, delightful show personality.

BP; 2 Dolan's Glenrood Forever Popsy, 7 months wheaten, on similar lines to I, most appealing head & expression, very feminine all through, lovely neck & shoulders, pleasing in body & quarters, moved with free flowing stride. Close decision, two very nice pups; 3 Green's Aizenay Dinah Might.

PB (10,4) I Dolan's Glenrood Forever Topps, very promising wheaten, litter sister to 2 in MP with a touch more maturity, looking good in profile, lovely for type & balance, coat of correct texture. Just needs more head furnishings to finish the picture; 2 Thompson's Casteline Bonnie, 9 months wheaten, just out of MP, very similar to I in make & shape, pleasing head, forehand, body & rib. Lost topline a little on the move, needs time; 3 Waugh's Tribannon Hermione.

JB (15,3) I Parker-Tucker's Splinterhill's Zip In Gold at Uniquecottage, r/br, very typical, exquisite well furnished balanced feminine head, lovely expression, pleasing front, legs & feet, liked her length, level back & set on, moved freely with drive; 2 Ward's Vanajam Klarvoyant, dark gr/br, much the same age as I, completely feminine, lovely eye & expression, excels in neck & shoulders, body developing well, enough depth of ribs, topline carried well on the move, very close up to I; 3 Green's Aizenay Que Sera Sera.

MB (1)1 Smith's Dorquette Foxtrot, showy red, sweet bitch of medium size, very feminine, good in most respects, especially the forehand. Just needs to gain a little more confidence on the table.

NB (5.2) I Dolan's Glenrood Black Diamond, just out of puppy, this very promising gr/br youngster fits the requirements well throughout, impressed with her length & overall balance, excellent neck & shoulders, topline & quarters, liked her movement, nice bitch; 2 Saich's Lindcoly Christmas Lady, gr/br, nice type, in good coat & condition, moved well once settled, good head & expression, level topline, good tailset. Not the showmanship of I but did OK; 3 Newman's Rivercroft Maddies A Gem.

UGB (5,2) I Mclntyre's Beanoak Snug In The Blanket, light gr/br, nice size, liked her height to length ratio, very feminine head, lovely eye & alert expression. Carrying a tad too much weight. Free showgirl & a steady mover; 2 R Maddies A Gem, gr/br of pleasing proportions, attractive head, keen expression, good length of back & tailset. developing well in quarters. Could lose weight to advantage, little loose in front movement; 3 Ough's Ocedar Look At Me.

BB (7) I Lifton's Anjofra Treacle Tart at Liffycairn, light red, very typical head, neat ears, dark eye, correct bite, balances out well, correct depth & spring of rib for her size, moved freely with drive. Wish there was just a little more of her; 2 Penticharm Light My Fire, red, unplaced in JB, shade more length of leg than I, otherwise much the same remarks apply. Balanced,-nicely bodied, good coat. Not the same freedom of movement of I; 3 Day's Chilli Pepper atTreki.

GB (6,1) I Robinson's Cruzo Cinderella. very showy light gr/br, completely feminine, typy head & expression, in good coat of correct texture, liked her neck & shoulders, balanced outline, rear angulation & hocks, very active on the move; 2 Inett's Carradine Magic Star, very smart gr/br with dark points, good spring of rib, topline & tailset, very good coat & presentation. Close up to I in many respects, moves better in hind movement than front; 3 Lifton's Glenrood Tanzanite Magic at Liffycairn.

PGB (8,1) I Kinton's Woodthorpe Rosemary N Thyme, very smart outgoing wheaten bitch, pretty feminine head, nicely constructed in

body, ideal balance with ample rib development, adequate bend of stifle, hocks well let down, in top form, ring presence superb; 2 Marshall's Strathgarten Kenmilfore Lady Marmalade, light red, totally feminine head with that impish expression, pleasing forehand construction, good topline & tailset, lovely showgirl. Just preferred length of I;3 Shannon, Storr & Culliford's Brenndarcy Be Bop Deluxe.

LB (8,1) I Poile's Kedvaiy Can-Can, lovely red of correct type & size, beautiful well furnished head, eyecatching expression, good front & tight feet, excels in reach of neck, layback of shoulder, rib & loin, so well balanced, sound quarters, responds well to handler, excellent ring presence & showmanship, truly impresses with her fluency in movement which appears effortless. CC & RBIS; 2 Cameron's Stryveling Meg Merrilees, one I have judged before & my opinion has not changed, good quality bitch, well presented dark gr/br, lovely expressive head, scores in conformation & balance, well turned quarters, free movement with plenty of drive. Not the easiest of decisions to separate these two lovely bitches as they both fit the Standard so well, in the end just preferred the ring presence of I. RCC; 3 Hooton's Penticharm Caribbean Queen.

OB (6) I Fetters & Rumen's Ch. Landbuck Heidi Claire, extremely sound dark gr/br, has obvious quality, pleasing head shape & expression, lovely conformation, balanced body, well made shapely hindquarters, covered the ground with ease; 2 Hooton's Penticharm Time To Party, light gr/br, of first rate type, very little to separate these two. Nice size, in complete balance, well animated, lovely shaped head with dark points, ears used well, pleasing front, neck & topline, effective shapely quarters, used to advantage; 3 Firth & Jones' Cairngold Cedar.

JOHN BUNTING
