Championship Dog Show Saturday 20th October 2007

CAIRN  TERRIERS

Thank you to the Committee for inviting me to judge their Championship Show, and a big thank you to the exhibitors for the fabulous entry of 172 dogs.  I thoroughly enjoyed the day, especially when I was greeted by the army as soon as I walked through the door!!

Amongst the exhibits I found one undershot mouth, but was surprised at the amount of week pasterns, which contributed to mediocre front movement.  I was also disappointed with the lack of depth of brisket in so many of the exhibits together with a lack of substance which gave the impression of being ‘shelly’.  Heads on the whole were good, but light eyes are creeping in together with round eyes.  Coats and presentation were mostly good, however there were quite a few open coats.

My awards are as follows:-

MINOR PUPPY DOG 4 (1)

4.               Newton’s Strathinver Such a Star.  6 month old wheaten brindle, well up to size with a very masculine head, excellent mouth and eyes.  Excellent front, well put together puppy, best of coats, who moved well once settled.

5.               Firth & Jones Cairngold Cut to the Chase.  7 month old smart red.  I liked this a lot but would prefer a more masculine head.  He has all the attributes of 1, but on a smaller scale.  Two dogs to watch in the future.

6.               Lindcoly’s Only the Lonely.

PUPPY DOG  5 (1)

5.               Dolan & Inett’s Glenrood Iceman.  11 month old wheaten with the characteristic dark points.  Well proportioned youngster, he looks good and doesn’t disappoint on the table.  Typical Cairn head & expression, excelled in front, lovely lay back of shoulders flowing into a level topline and correct tail set.  Good depth of brisket, with strong hind quarters which propelled him forward into effortless movement.  Confident showman – Best Puppy in Show

6.               Peers Tweedisle Guy Mannering. 10 month old wheaten brindle.  He will be more impressive when his new coat has grown.  He is older than 1, but not quite as mature in his development – needs time.

7.               Mears Glenmear Noble Minstrel.

JUNIOR DOG  5 (1)

5.               Waugh’s Tribannon Warlord. Grey brindle, with a good masculine head.  I liked his outline and overall confirmation.  Good depth of brisket, level top line and tail set.  He was on his toes today and moved well both fore and aft.

6.               Smee’s Malmay King of the Road. Wheaten brindle who looks as though he’s on stilts at the moment.  He needs to drop in brisket and grow his new coat.  Steady mover.

7.               Peers Tweedisle Guy Mannering.

NOVICE DOG 2 (1)

  1. Barclay & Wingate’s Bikachyx Silver Dragster.  Wheaten, in good coat.  Best of mouths, good head, top line and tail set, but his movement, both front and rear were his downfall.  Having said that he thoroughly enjoyed himself.

UNDERGRADUATE DOG 7 (1)

  1. Saich’s Kiataia Masquerade. Red, but coat not at its best.  Good mouth, level top line, good brisket.  One of the better movers in this class.
  2. Smith’s Rocasovale Razzle Dazzle.  Wheaten brindle.  Well boned strong dog, nice head, good top line and tail set.  Well muscled quarters, but I’ve seen him move better.
  3. Lifton’s Glenrood Stormkeeper

Post Graduate Dog 8 (1)

  1. Percy’s Winetta Jimmy Mack. Red brindle with a lovely new coat coming through.  A striking dog who took my eye as soon as he came into the ring.  Excellent confirmation.  Best of heads.  I loved his sloping shoulders and spirit level top line.  Well muscled quarters, good strong feet, well up on his toes, sound mover.  Was a bit of a handful for his handler – well deserved Res. C.C.
  2. Stephinson’s Twohoots Barnabas JW. Wheaten in good coat.  I have watched this young dog’s progress with interest.  Unlucky to come up against 1 on such good form today.  Lovely outline and confirmation. Strong masculine head, good top line and tail set.  Not as positive in movement as 1 both fore and aft.
  3. Cameron’s Stryveling Robb Ruadh.

LIMIT DOG 13 (3)

  1. Catto’s Birselaw Daydream Believer. Cream with dark points.  Loved this young dog’s true Cairn expression with eyes that would melt snow. Coat not at its best, but new coat already there.  Nothing phased him, kept his top line throughout due to his effortless movement.  Good feet and pasterns.  Did everything his handler asked of him. C.C. & B I S
  2. Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Spellbinder. Wheaten with dark points. Correct coat and well presented.  Another one that I have watched progress through the classes.  Good head, correct mouth.  He didn’t move well on his front today, which played havoc with his top line.
  3. Grainger’s Devil in Disguise.

OPEN DOG 8 (4)

  1. Thomas & Hooton’s Ch. Raskens Romping Playboy (imp). Grey brindle in excellent coat, and as always well presented.  Best of heads, good top line and tail set.  Good depth of brisket, strong hindquarters, but his front let him down today in the challenge, as I didn’t get the parallel movement I was looking for.  Excellent showman.
  2. Peers Tweedisle Sweet Talking Guy. Dark brindle, coat not at its best which spoilt  his outline.  He has all of the components in the correct place, but they weren’t working together today.
  3. Goldfinch’s Anjofra Hobbs Among Kanawha.

BEGINNERS DOG 3 (1)

  1. Ough’s Ocedar Zephyr. Red in good coat, steady mover.
  2. Davey’s Castleline Game Spirit at Beranburgh. Grey brindle, good head, level top line. Game fellow, who had only one eye, as due to cancer the other had to be removed.  He seemed to enjoy his day out.

SPECIAL VETERAN 3

  1. Petts Doonrae Dragoon. 8 years old dark brindle in good  harsh coat.  Good head and mouth, good top line and tail set.  Would give the youngsters a run for their money. Showed well.
  2. Davey’s Castleline Game Spirit at Beranburgh
  3. Birch’s Kinkim Prinz Ludy

Special Veteran Bitch 9 (3)

  1. Thomas’s Ch. Tycadno Columbia. 10 year old dark brindle, with grey trimmings!! If she hadn’t got a grey beard she could pass for a 5 year old.  Lovely feminine head, in excellent condition.  Showed all out and deserved her award of Best Veteran.
  2. Pearson’s Cloverbrook Corona Cracker Sh CM. 8 ½ year old wheaten with dark points.  Another with that lovely head and expression.  Moved and showed well, she can also sing!!
  3. Weinberger’s Ch. Correnie Unforgettable. 4 (2)

Special Veteran Dog/Bitch

  1. Parker Tucker’s Uniquecottage Oyster Catcher.  11 year old red dog. In very good condition, well muscled, excellent mover, but a “grumpy old man” today.  Showed well.
  2. Ough’s Stormy Weather. 13½ year old red.  Very sedate lady, in good condition for her age, but only had one pace….slow.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH 9 (5)

  1. Petts Cairngold Gunning for Gold with Doonrae. 7 month old wheaten brindle with dark points. Very feminine head and lovely expression.  In short harsh coat.  I liked her outline and confirmation for one so young.  Excelled in front, correct layback with level top line and good tail set.  Moved and showed like a veteran.
  2. Felters & Rumens Landbuck Silver Muse. 6 month old cream in lovely coat.  Another lovely puppy who has similar attributes to 1st, but needs a little more time to settle. Will watch them both with interest.
  3. Braybook’s Cloverbrook Amazing Grace

PUPPY BITCH 13 (4)

  1. Peers Tweedisle Dolly Daydream. 10 month old wheaten brindle in good coat. Feminine head and expression. Lovely outline, Beautiful puppy moved well, but just needs nurturing as she hadn’t got that ‘Cairn sparkle’ today.
  2. Mears Glenmear Misty Moonlight. 10 month old red brindle.  Very feminine head, lovely outline,  front movement not too good, but she has time on her side.  Showed well.
  3. Fielder’s Miradorose Little Gem

JUNIOR BITCH 14 (4)

  1. Smee’s Malmay Sky’s the Limit. Wheaten brindle, oozes quality. Very feminine head, lovely outline, best of fronts excellent layback of shoulders.  Correct neck, level top line, nice depth of brisket and to top it all she can move!!!  I liked her a lot. Res. C.C.
  2. Firth’s & Jones Cairngold Avin a Paddy. Dark brindle in good coat. Lovely head and expression, with those mischievous eyes.  Good top line and tail set.  Well muscled quarters.  Unlucky to meet 1 in this class today, but her turn will come.
  3. Thompson’s Castleline Bonnie

MAIDEN BITCH 9 (3)

  1. Firth & Jones Cairngold Candlelight. Frisky red, kept her handler on her toes. Full of mischief, which you could see in her eyes. Lovely head alert expression. Moved well when settled.
  2. Peers Tweedisle Dolly Daydream
  3. Ough’s Ocedar Just Fancy

NOVICE BITCH 6 (2)

  1. Weinbergers Correnie Crazy for You. Wheaten brindle in good coat. Best of heads, superb confirmation, level top line, good tail set. Well muscled quarters. Beautiful bitch, but lacked that elusive ‘sparkle’.
  2. Dolan’s Glenrood Forever Topps. Wheaten, very feminine.  Excellent show girl, moved well fore and aft, but preferred the size of 1.
  3. Peers Tweedisle The Golden Touch.

UNDERGRADUATE BITCH 9 (3)

  1. Dolan’s Glenrood Black Diamond. Red brindle, caught my eye as she entered the ring. Lovely outline, correct front, top line and tail set. Confident show girl, but disappointed with her rear action.
  2. Brown’s Bencana Tickle Pink. Wheaten brindle, feminine head, good mouth. A little heavy on her shoulders, which spoilt her outline and front movement.
  3. Moseley’s Carradine Sapphire at Spawyche

POST GRADUATE BITCH 13 (0)

  1. Robinson’s Cruzo Bannock Belle. Red brindle in good coat and well presented. Best of heads, loved her confirmation and show presence. Excelled in front and well muscled quarters, flowed over the ground effortlessly.
  2. Waugh’s Rivercottage Sandys Legend. Red brindle, good head lovely expression. Best of coats, very busy little dog, who moved well , but would have preferred a freer gait.
  3. Stephinsons Twohoots Agnes

LIMIT BITCH 11 (2)

  1. Shannon, Storr & Cullifords Brenndarcy Be Bop Deluxe. Wheaten with dark points.  I have watched this bitch ‘blossom’ over the past 12 months. Good harsh coat, good head and excellent mouth. Excelled in front, correct layback flowing into a level top line. Well sprung ribs, well muscled hind quarters giving her the drive for her free flowing movement. She covered the ground with ease, a classy lady. C.C.
  2. Robinson’s Cruzo Cinderella. Wheaten brindle, in good coat, well presented. Feminine head and expression, preferred movement of 1.
  3. Cameron’s Stryveling Meg Merrilees.

OPEN BITCH 9 (3)

  1. Poile’s Kedvaiy Can-Can. Red, in good coat. Full of life. Sound all around with free striding movement. Showed all out.
  2. Braybrook’s Cloverbrook Wow. Wheaten bitch, with a gorgeous head. Close decision between these two, but preferred movement of 1.
  3. Firth & Jones Cairngold Cedar

BEGINNERS BITCH 6 (2)

  1. Ough’s Ocedar Look at Me. Red, moved well, steady showgirl.
  2. Crane’s Mimorma Gallton. Wheaten in short coat and lacked furnishings.  Not easy to assess movement as she was hard work for her handler.
  3. Hawkins Penticharm Light My Fire.

Winner of the Brace class was Mrs S. Dolan
