CRUFTS – CAIRN TERRIERS.

My thanks to exhibitors for the excellent entry and sporting acceptance of my decisions. I was somewhat disappointed in the overall quality of the entry however, While I was pleased with my winners, I felt there was not enough strength in depth and this worries me. I was pleased with the condition of exhibits in that none were dirty or smelly and I did not notice any ‘substances’ in the coats.  My greatest concern was the state of teeth.  None of the exhibits had dirty teeth but where, oh where, are the “Large teeth  … with perfect, regular and complete scissor bite.”?  In this entry they were in a minority.  Mouth faults ranged from small teeth and/or only just a scissor bite, to reverse scissor bite or even jumbled. Teeth can ‘drift’ with age of course but I am referring mainly to dogs under 3 years old, and even some currently winning animals.  At one time such Cairns wouldn’t even be retained, far less exhibited at Crufts! On the plus side, temperaments were, as one expects, 100% good, a credit to owners and training. Movement was in the main acceptable with only a handful showing what I would consider major faults.  Coats varied in length of course, but quality was overall satisfactory.

Veteran D. (8, 2abs) 1. Wall’s Ch Shearwater Cae de Sonhas, almost 10 years old grey brindle and in tip-top condition. Super head, good coat, lovely outline, moved very soundly, put down to perfection. 2. Birch’s Kinkim Prinz Ludy, red brindle, 10 years, another stayer, typical head and expression, fit and in good body and coat, well presented. 3. Parker-Tucker’s Ch. Uniquecottage Tidy Shoes, red brindle, quite a youngster at 7 years, excellent profuse coat, well bodied, another good mover, just preferred the heads, and overall balance of 1 and 2.

Special Puppy D. (10,3) 1. Ward’s Vanajam Pop Idol,  beautifully proportioned light red with good length of leg, attractive masculine head, level topline with good tailset, well-sprung ribs, straight front and correct hind angulation, a little short of coat but forgivable at 13 months, moved very soundly. BP. 2. Moseley & Inett’s Spawyche Elizabethan Onyx, very smart red. Similar to 1, another good head and outline, coat of correct texture, just preferred the movement of 1. 3. Pollock’s Larchlea Time To Entertain At Stanedykes. Dark gray with profuse coat, which slightly detracted from his outline and made him look a little unbalanced.  Very nice head, good mouth, moved OK but not behaving too well.

Special Junior D (8,1) 1. Dolan & Inett’s Glenrood Ice Man very well put together light red, all of a piece and well balanced, lovely head, excellent movement, good coat, good angulation front and rear, nice for size. 2. Green’s Aizenay The Mighty Quinn, grey, his super head won him this place, somewhat short of coat, good front when allowed to move on a loose lead but a little ring training wouldn’t come amiss. 3. Saich’s New Adventure, red, smaller model, typical enough, moved OK, good quality coat.  Not, I’m afraid, the best class in the entry.

Yearling D. (12,3) 1. Catto’s Birselaw Daydream Believer, light red, lovely dog with a beautiful head and melting expression, so typy and well balanced, coat of correct length and texture as is always the case from this kennel, everything in the right place so movement was as sound as one would expect, happy, showy boy, close-up in challenge. 2. Edney’s Cherrycrack Poacher, slightly rangier red dog, typical masculine head, a little short of coat but well proportioned with level topline, moved nicely. 3. Short’s Glenchess All In The Stars, dark brindle, good head and expression, well balanced with lovely coat, excellent mover.

Post. Grad. D (16,4) 1. Copley’s Cloverbrook Play The Game, most attractive cream, smashing head with lovely dark points, all male, very good coat, well-bodied with nice spring of rib and layback of shoulder, showing and moving very well.  2. Cameron’s Stryveling Robb Ruadh, typy red brindle boy, showy dog, excellent quality coat, well balanced which showed in his movement, just preferred the head of 1. 3. Waugh’s Tribannon Warlord, grey with lovely coat, moved out truly as is usual from this exhibitor, not quite the balance of 1 and 2 but very typical and sound.

Limit D. (13,3) 1. Percy’s Winetta Jimmy Mack, red brindle,  I have admired this dog in the past but felt today he lacked sparkle when it came to the challenge. Excellent head, exuded breed type, super coat, beautifully presented, well handled. Not a big dog but very masculine and moved very well.  2. Firth & Jones Cairngold Jackpot, cream, another lovely head with the very attractive dark ears, level topline and correct tailset, good bend of stifle, sound on the move, well put down,  3. Inett & Harrison’s Glenchess Gabriel Over Carradine, red, good outline with excellent topline and tailset and angulation, but preferred movement of 1 & 2.

Open D. (14,4) 1. Hogarty’s Ir. Ch Cadagio The Unexpected, such a striking grey dog, full of himself, showing all the time, most typical head and expression, good teeth, balanced outline with good bend of stifle, well laid shoulders and spring of rib, good length and quality of coat, strode out very soundly, beautiful Cairn.  Pleased to award him the CC and B.O.B and was delighted when he made the last 7 in the Group.  2. Thomas & Hooton’s Rasken’s Romping Playboy (Imp.) Lovely dog with super topline and tailset, Very typy with a lovely head, moved very well but just felt he looked a little heavy today and not quite as animated as he might be. RCC  3. Saich’s Hector Of  The Glen, red with a gorgeous coat of the correct length.   Very typical, masculine and a sound mover.

Good Citizen D.  (3.0) 1. Fairweather’s Ock Ross I’m the Boss, grey, alert expression, nice small ears, typical head, happy little dog. 2. Fairweather’s Ock Little Tinker, grey, well proportioned body with nice head, level topline, not as good in tailset as 1. 3. Laker’s Wizoz Rory, red, another typical well-behaved little chap who disappeared before I had finished my notes.

Veteran B 1. Short’s Glenchess Night Owl, 10 ½ year-old dark grey and could she move – could show the youngsters a thing or two, she just flowed round the ring. Coat a bit short but excellent quality, full of beans and showing her socks off, very typical with super head. 2. Goud’s Beanoak Scatter the Mud, another dark one, not quite as good on the move as 1. but lovely coat, typy head, looking very well for her 7 years,  3. Pearson’s Cloverbrook Corona Cracker, cream, almost 9 years, pretty bitch, coat let her down here but all Cairn. Three lovely ladies.

Special Puppy B (11,1) 1. Confue’s Anjofra Me Me Me, light red with dark points, very sweet typical bitch, level topline with good tailset, well ribbed up, nice length of neck and well bent stifle, lovely coat, moved soundly. 2. Petts’ Cairngold Gunning For Gold with Doonrae, slightly rangier light red bitch, a little bigger than 1, most attractive head and expression with dark points, good front and general outline, sound. 3. Inett, Harrison & Clayton’s, Carradine Between Friends, red brindle, preferred heads of 1 & 2 but she won her place on movement.  Excellent coat and showed well.

Special Junior B (14,2) 1. Weinberger’s Correnie Crazy For you, lovely bitch, light grey with a head par excellence, so typy, super level topline, correct tailset and straight front, well angulated, could perhaps move with a little more drive. 2. Firth & Jones’ Cairngold Candlelight, light red, another super head with dark ears, typical expression, good coat, balanced bitch, moved well,  3. Catto’s Birselaw Just A Moment, excellent coat, beautiful expression, moving and showing very well.  Little to separate these three lovely bitches.

Yearling B (18,4) 1. Firth & Jones Cairngold ‘Avin A Paddy, dark grey and with a wicked expression, that piercing look which says ‘I’m a Cairn,’ lovely head, right size, super hard coat, very well proportioned from her nice neck to her well set on tail, moved and showed well but it was the impish sparkle which did it for me. 2. Brown’s Bencana Tickle Pink, light grey, very similar to 1. in her typical head and proportions, moved OK but not quite as positively as 1.  3. Moseley’s Carradine Sapphire at Spawyche, light red, attractive dark ears and muzzle, lovely expression, good coat.  Three beautiful bitches.

Post Grad. B (21,8) All light reds.  1. Thompson’s Castleline Tiger Lily, dark ears and mask give her a most attractive head.  Well proportioned, correct coat, super topline and tailset, moved very soundly, well presented and handled. 2. Kinton’s Woodthorpe Rosemary ‘N’ Thyme, similar type to1. well bodied with good shoulders and front, preferred tailset of 1. 3. Goud’s Brindleoak Bundle And Go, slightly smaller bitch but typical and sound with attractive head and expression.

Limit B (9,3) 1. Waugh’s Razzle Dazzle Glory At Tribannon, cream, stood out in this class, up to size but beautiful head, gorgeous coat of correct length, excellent driving movement, handler didn’t stay to let me take notes but I considered her in the challenge. However the handler let his charge get so excited that it was difficult to assess her standing. 2. Robinson’s Cruzo Cinderella, red brindle, right for size, good coat, head enhanced by dark points, well made bitch so moved correctly. 3. Marshall’s Strathgarten Kenmilfore Lady Marmalade, well-coated red, typical, moved OK.

Open B (17,7) Smook-Van Koolbergen’s Ned/Lux Ch. Birselaw Emma, red brindle, what a lovely bitch, glorious head, with such a typical expression, all Cairn. Very showy, lovely outline, correct length of neck and legs, well sprung ribs and nice layback of shoulder, straight front and well angulated at the rear, super coat, moved beautifully.CC.  Just had the edge over 2. Short’s Glenchess Golden Wings, excellent coated red, another sound good mover from this kennel.  Very typical head, well balanced bitch, good mouth, nice length of leg and tail. RCC  3. Templeton’s Ch. Larchlea Remember Remember, very dark grey, again in lovely coat, not a small bitch, leggier than the first two and a little longer in neck, very typical in head but preferred the overall proportions of 1 and 2.

Good Citizen B. (3.0) 1. Williams’ Curtisey Joint Venture, very pretty light grey with feminine head and good coat, lively and showy and moving soundly. 2. Waites’ Seveek Country Lover Of Svendalens, not so positive in movement as 1. but typical head and expression and coat OK. 3. Laker’s Anjofra Nobody’s Perfect At Wizoz, happy little bitch with nice coat, not quite the head of 1 & 2. but responding well to handler.
