CRUFTS: CAIRN
TERRIERS: Judge Yvonne Catto It was a great honour to judge “my best little pals” at
Crufts. It was a wonderful entry, thanks to all the exhibitors, many who had
travelled from far distant shores, for making it such an enjoyable
experience. Many thanks also to my ring stewards who did their tasks with
great efficiency enabling me to finish judging in good time. The open dog and open bitch classes were very competitive and
many top class exhibits went cardless. I thought the challenge line up for
both sexes was exceptional. I was looking for a sound well balanced cairn, typy and with
the head and expression that conveys that mischievous wistful look that is so
unique to the breed. Bitches had great quality in depth; the same cannot be
said of the males. I found some males with very poor heads and some with what
I would consider heavy bone. I found a couple of cairns with level bites and
some others with very small teeth. Temperaments were excellent and coats were
very good with no extremes of presentation. Movement overall I think has
improved since the last time I judged in 2005. The quality of the bitches’ augers well for the future of the
breed, my only worry is the lack, in quantity, of suitable stud dogs with
equal merit. Veteran Dog (8, 2a) 1st Parker- Tuckers Ch Uniquecottage Tidy Shoes,
d/b 8 yr old, lovely headed male with correct stop and expression, good reach
of neck, level topline and good tailset, well balanced and in wonderful coat
and condition, sound moving dog and excellent showman. 2nd Robert’s Ch Cannwood Augurey, 7 year old,
attractive wheaten in lovely double coat, good head and expression, nice
reach of neck, good topline and tailset, good length of leg, moved and showed
well. 3rd Wall’s Ch Shearwater Cae De Sonhas, d/b, 10
years old and still moving and showing with enthusiasm, masculine head, well
constructed throughout but just a bit short of coat on the day. Special Puppy Dog (8, 1a) 1st Wall’s Cloverbrook Ray of Sunshine Over
Shearwater, 10 months old, wheaten brindle who presents a nice outline
standing and on the move, good mouth, nice reach of neck and level topline,
well balanced sound puppy who just needs head furnishings to finish the
picture, showed steadily. 2nd Bennet’s Maximal Tinkers Moon, 11 months old,
quality red brindle with beautiful head and expression, neat ears, well
constructed body, good topline and tailset, in good coat, bit rangy at the
moment. 3rd Matthews Sharpamatt Prince of Joy, 13 months,
red brindle, smaller than 1 & 2 but well balanced, has a good head and
expression, in good double coat, moved soundly but would like a little more
animation. Special Junior Dog (8) 1st Inett & Harrison’s Noncom Inett Tu Winnit
With Carrradine, 16 month old, striking wheaten brindle with a very good well
balanced head and attractive expression, lovely reach of neck and correct
shoulders, good topline and tailset, in well presented double coat, up to
size but everything in proportion, moved well and showed with animation. 2nd Downie & Tate Jaeva Face The Music, 14
months old, typy dark brindle with a lovely head with keen expression, not a
big boy but a well balanced cairn with a stamp of quality about him, nicely
bodied and in very good coat, bit distracted today giving his handler a hard
time but still very promising. 3rd Percy’s Landbuck Colour Scheme For Winetta, 16
months old, red in well presented coat, good head with keen expression, neat
ears and nice reach of neck, level topline and good tailset, nice length of
leg, showed steadily and moved soundly. Yearling Dog (8,1a) 1st Bidegain’s Am Ch Zalazar Walk The Line, 23
months old, red brindle, what a stunning young male, he entered the ring as
if he owned it, possesses the most gorgeous head with classic expression,
good stop, big teeth, neat well set ears, neck flowed into clean shoulders,
level topline and tail bang on top, moved true both ways, coat was presented
to perfection but still retained its natural workman-like appearance, held
his super outline standing and on the move, great showman, alert, active
& agile this male had it all, never put a foot wrong, totally at one with
his handler, pleasure to award him the CC & BOB. 2nd Moseley & Inett’s Spawyche Elizabethan Onyx, 23 months
old, wheaten brindle with dark points, nicely constructed youngster with
lovely head and expression, good neck and well laid back shoulders, level
topline and good tailset, well presented coat, moved soundly. 3rd Peers Tweedisle That Guy Johnny, wheaten

good but slightly overtrimmed presentation. 2nd Peer’s Tweedisle Guy Mannering, dark brindle,
lovely head, well furnished, good ear set, well proportioned cairn who was
shown in a lovely well presented double coat, moved well and showed with
animation, close decision. 3rd Barney’s Alfie Lunar Hopper, wheaten brindle,
plainer in head than two above, nicely constructed throughout and was in very
good coat, showed and moved ok. Limit Dog (14,3a) 1st Pollock’s Larchlea Licence To Thrill At
Stanedykes, attractive red brindle who had recently gained his title, this 2
year old has the most beautiful masculine head and expression, good eye,
lovely mouth with big teeth, excellent reach of neck flowing into well laid
back shoulders, level topline and good tailset, well constructed cairn who
was in very good coat and condition, moved well back and fore, was giving his
handler a hard time today but his overall class and quality still kept him in
the reckoning for a ticket. 2nd Ward’s Vanajam Pop Idol, eye catching wheaten
with a lovely head and expression good mouth, very good reach of neck flowing
into correct shoulders, level topline and correct tailset, good reach of leg,
moved well both ways, in very good coat and condition, he has a lovely
profile and is a very showy cairn. 3rd Middlehurst’s Zalazar Unzipped At Starveren,
well balanced smart red with good head and expression, good mouth, neck,
topline and tailset, in excellent coat and condition, very attentive showdog
who covers the ground effortlessly. Open Dog (18,6a) What a fantastic class of males, many dogs went cardless that
I would have been more than happy to have awarded a first place. 1st Lindborg & Nordstrand’s Int Ch Rasken’s
Respected Billy Joel, impressive red brindle, I loved him when I judged him
in Norway a couple of years ago and he still is an excellent example of an
top quality cairn, he possesses the most lovely head and expression, has neat
ears, good eye, good mouth, lovely reach of neck, topline and tailset
correct, right length of leg, well coated balanced dog who shows with
attitude, in challenge just preferred more positive front movement of the
ticket winner, RCC. 2nd Hogarty’s Ir Ch Cadagio The Unexpected, dark brindle,
another beautifully headed cairn with a truly mischievous expression, good
eye, neat ears, well constructed body, in well presented double coat of
correct length, moved with verve, showy dog who seems to be so happy in the
ring, he oozes quality and it was a close decision between him and Billy
Joel. 3rd Thomas Ch Rasken’s Romping Playboy, dark brindle with a
most lovely head and typy expression, neat ears, good eye and mouth, good
bone, presented in double coat of correct texture, well proportioned male who
I would just like to see put a little more effort into his showing but
nevertheless a top class dog. Good Citizens Dog Scheme Dog (0) Veteran Bitch (1) 1st Short’s Ch Glenchess Night Owl, D/B, very happy
10 year old showgirl with a good head and a very keen expression, well
balanced cairn who was in lovely coat
and condition, moved well and with great enthusiasm. Special Puppy Bitch (15,3a) 1st Wards Vanajam Leading Lady, 13 months old,
wheaten, what a gorgeous girl, lovely outline which she holds so well
standing or on the move, charming head with typy expression, good mouth,
excellent reach of neck, level back and bang on tailset, good bone,
accomplished showgirl who moved with such style, she just flowed round the
ring, she had reach in front and drive behind, would have been happy to have
taken this one home! Best puppy. 2nd Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Button It, 13
months old, another quality puppy, wheaten with good head and expression,
well constructed throughout and moved soundly both ways, in good coat and
condition, lacked animation today but still a very promising young lady. 3rd Newton’s Strathinver Sheenagh, 1 year old,

red in excellent good coat and condition, typy head, with neat ears and dark
eye, nicely constructed body, just right amount of bone, held her outline
well on the move and showed with enthusiasm, little between these two but I
just preferred head of one. 3rd Weinberger’s Larchlea Good Vibrations At
Correnie, dark brindle with attractive head, good length of neck, good
