SOUTH WALES & WEST OF
ENGLAND CAIRN TERRIER CLUB
Championship Show
Saturday
17th October 2009
My thanks to the Officers and
Committee for inviting me to judge their Silver Anniversary Show. The
atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly and the anniversary cake and wine
superb. Credit must also go to the Committee for the choice and quality of the
venue. The ring was carpeted which made it feel warm and enabled movement to be
assessed easily. I must also thank the Exhibitors for their entries and my
Stewards for the smooth running of the Show – good stewarding makes such a
difference!
The overall quality of the
exhibits today was good. I found only one or two with eyes that were lighter
than desired and one or two more that were round. Movement, to my eye, still
needs to improve – this seems to be a perennial problem. There was a mixture of
wide fronts, close hocks and inadequate drive. On the plus side coats (mostly)
seemed to be in good order in terms of quality and density. Mouths were mostly
as they should be with proper scissor bite, clean and no missing or jumbled
teeth. Lack of good bone and overall substance was an issue with one or two
otherwise good specimens.
As has been mentioned by other
Judges there seems to be a lack of younger puppies being shown – especially
dogs. This may well be a reflection of the costs of exhibiting and the credit
crunch.
SVD
(7-10years incl) (1, 0 abs)
1 Catto’s CH BIRESLAW BILLY FURY
(RE-IMP). What a way to start the show! This 8 year old dark brindle dog is
superb. Balanced with an excellent head, topline, tailset and coat. Strode
around the ring as if he owned it. A wonderful example of the breed. Had to
give way to his younger compatriots in the Challenge. Best Veteran.

1
Shopland’s CHERRYCRACK BLACK ADDER. Balanced dark
grey/brindle in good coat. Liked his head and dark eye of correct shape. Moved
with drive and maintained his level topline on the move. Correct tailset. His
last puppy class ended on a high. BPD, BPIS
2 Soper’s ELTICHARM DREAM BOY. A good
headed wheaten of good type with a good head. Coat good but unfortunately front
movement was a little wayward today and he didn’t keep his topline as well as 1
on the move.
JD (7, 2)
A very mixed class.
1
Shannon & Storr’s BRENNDARCY TROUBLE AT MILL. Red
brindle with good head, eye, stop and neck. Kept his topline on the move.
Movement needs to tighten but is still only 13 months.
2
Warnes’s SPIREBROOKE DAWN RAIDER. Balanced silver/brindle in
good coat. Correctly placed ears, excellent mouth, good bone and tailset
3 Kinchin’s
TYREECES TRICKS
MD (No
entries)
ND (2, 0)
1
Heidecker & Inett’s HYDECASTLE NORMAN. All male
red/brindle in good coat and with a good head, eye and bone. Moved with drive
and maintained his topline and tailset. Would prefer a little more neck and
leg.
2 Tutchings’ TRIBANNON GYPSY KING AT
CROWNEAST. Nice overall type, balanced with coat coming in. Well up on the leg
and moved well. Everything as it should be but lost out to 1 on maturity. Time
to improve and develop.
UGD (4, 0)
1
Ward’s VANAJAM DIRTY DANCING. Red/brindle with a lovely
head, eye, stop and expression. Balanced with good body. Showy. Moved with the
desired drive from the rear.
2
King & Leighton’s CARRADINE MAYBE THE MOON AT
HARKINLEIGH. Grey/brindle, masculine dog with similar qualities to 1 – head,
eye and expression – also moved out well.
3
SPIREBROOKE DAWN RAIDER
PGD (7, 0)
A good class
1
Catto’s BIRSELAW FOLLOW YOUR DREAM. Grey/red brindle with an
excellent head, stop, ear placement, bone, coat, topline. Moved around the ring
with purpose.
2
Moseley & Inett’s SPAWYCHE ELIZABETHAN ONYX.
Grey/brindle, balanced of good type very similar to 1 with good reach of neck
and coat. Pushed 1 hard.
3
Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE RALEIGH
LD (6, 1)
1
Smith’s ROCASOVALE RAZZLE DAZZLE. Masculine grey/brindle in
good coat. Balanced. Very pleasing
head, neck, shoulders, bone. Moved around the ring with drive. His handler
worked hard to keep his attention and showed off his qualities when it
mattered. ResCC
2
King & Leighton’s CARRADINE NIGHT LISTENER AT
HARKINLEIGH. Another masculine dog of similar type to 1. Balanced with good
head, coat. Moved well. Unfortunate to meet 1 in good form - but that’s showing!
3
Lynch’s FIELDRON CALL MY BLUFF AT LINACRELADS
OD (9, 2)
This was a class teeming with quality and without doubt the
best of the day. The first five dogs could change places on another occasion.
1 Pollock’s CH LARCHLEA LICENCE TO
THRILL AT STANEDYKES. This is a stallion dark red/brindle dog who I have seen
in the ring many times. Today I had the chance of examining him at close
quarters and he didn’t disappoint. He has an excellent head with good eye
(shape and colour) correct bite, big teeth, just right bone. Quality coat of
correct texture. Kept his topline on the move. Handler did all that was
necessary to keep the dogs’ attention at all times. Didn’t put a foot wrong
when asked to move and deserved his CC and BIS
2 Templeton’s CH LARCHLEA TIME TO
ENTERTAIN. Another super grey/brindle dog. Best of heads, mouth, eye. Went
around the ring with a great sense of purpose and drive. Balanced. Correct
bone, shoulders. My type of Cairn and a worthy Champion of the breed.
2
Ward’s VANAJAM POP IDOL
BD (2, 0)
1
Warne’s SPIREBROOKE DAWN RAIDER. 2 nd in Junior
2 Kinchin’s TYREECES TRICKS. 3 rd in
Junior. Red/brindle of nice type with good head, eye bone.
SVB (7-10
years incl) (5, 3)
1
Munday’s CH STRADIVARIOUS SONATA. Lovely 8 ½ year old
grey/brindle in good coat and with excellent head, mouth and teeth. Moved well.
2
Pearson’s CLOVERBROOK CORONA CRACKER ShCM. Pretty cream who
didn't look her 10 plus years. Liked her head and she moved steadily. A little
short of coat. Enjoyed her day out.
MPB (1, 0)
1 Pett’s DOONRAE JOIE DE VIVRE. A very
promising, feminine red/brindle young puppy in very good coat. Lovely outline,
balanced, tail set on well level topline. Responsive to her handler who got the
best out of her. At only 8 ½ months looks to have a good future.
PB (9, 0)
Class of promising youngsters.
1
Short’s GLENCHESS MITSOUKA. Very alert 11 month red/brindle,
balanced with a typical head, proper mouth with correct bite. Tail carried well
and in full coat. Moved well. Balanced. Another promising youngster. BPB
2
Thomas’ TYCADNO STARLET. A lovely 11 ½ month old, balanced,
cream who looked good from every angle. Best of toplines, head, mouth and
tailset. Moved very well but coat not quite as good as 1 (that’s temporary) and
not quite the animation of 1 today.
3
Osborn’s TWESLAM MAID BY MAGIC
JB (12, 7)
1
Templeton’s LARCHLEA CAN’T REMEMBER. Dark brindle just
turned 12 months so looked a little immature. Nevertheless a typical showy
Cairn with good head, ear placement, mouth, teeth, bite, bone and overall
shape. Alert and attentive to her handler and move with drive. Bright future.
2
Bambridge’s LUVEMAL CHERRY BEA. Another alert and attentive
cream/wheaten young lady who moved well. She had a good head and neck. Her coat
was a little short.
3
Braybrook’s CLOVERBROOK XTRA FACTOR
MB (3, 0)
1
Osborn’s TWESLAM WINTER MAGIC. Only 9 months old but this
red/brindle moved well. Nicely balanced. Liked her head and eye. Coat in good
order and more furnishings would complete the picture.
2
Percy’s WINETTA MY KIND OF GIRL. Red, well up on the leg.
The head was ok but not as feminine as 1. Moved well. Quality coat. Struggled to keep her topline on the move.
3
Janes’ THERHYSE OLWAYS MOANIN
NB (7, 2)
1
TYCADNO STARLET. 2nd in a strong puppy class.
2
Williams’ CARRADINE TAFFY’S GIRL. Dark red/brindle with good
ear placement and dark eye. Preferred the substance and overall balance of 1.
3 Braybrook’s
CLOVERBROOK HERE I COME
UGB (9, 3)
1
Roberts’ CANNWOOD DANISH AFFAIR. Wheaten with good head,
stop, front and neck. Would like more coat. Strode out with purpose. Overall a
nice type.
2
Shannon & Storr’s BRENNDARCY BUTTON IT JW. Another good
headed wheaten with good bone and coat in good condition. Shorter neck than 1.
Also moved well. Close decision between these two.
3
Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE SEA BREEZE
PGB (13, 6)
1
Catto’s BIRSELAW BEWITCHED. I fell for this ultra feminine
grey/brindle. Lovely head, eye, ear
placement. Good neck that flowed into good shoulders and level topline. Body of
substance and spring of rib. Good front and moved out with excellent drive.
Very alert.
CC, ResBIS, BOS
2
Osborn’s TWESLAM SERENDIPITY. Unfortunate to meet the winner
of this class. Similar type but a little shorter in neck and leg. Nevertheless
well deserved her place in this strong class.
3
Moseley’s CARRADINE SAPPHIRE AT SPAWYCHE
LB (11, 4)
1
Ward’s VANAJAM LEADING LADY. Wheaten with a lovely outline.
Liked her head, eyes, ear placement, neck and topline which she kept on the
move. Moved out and back with drive. Alert and catches the eye. Very good
prospect.
2
Robinson’s CRUZO CAITLIN. A nice type, grey/brindle, up to
size with pleasing overall shape. Moved adequately but not as effortlessly as
1.
3
King, Leighton, Innet & Harrison’s CURTISEY FOREIGN
ACCOUNT WITH CARRADINE
OB (11, 6)
1
Short’s GLENCHESS CUT THE MUSTARD. A lovely red bitch in
excellent coat and condition. Very good head, eye, mouth and stop. Well
balanced and sound construction all over. Good bone. Tail a little proud.
Strode around the ring with the necessary drive and showed very well. RCC.
2
Harrison & Innet’s NONCOM MINNIE THE MINX AT CARRADINE.
Grey/brindle. Another nice type of feminine bitch though smaller than 1. Liked
her head, eye, mouth. Coat and topline ok but tailset appeared a little low.
Preferred the movement of 1 and she did look as though she was giving her
handler a hard time today.
3
Firth’s CAIRNGOLD CANDLELIGHT
BB (5, 2)
1
Day’s TREKHILLI PICCALLI JW. Dark red/brindle with
everything in the right place. Liked her substance, head, coat and tailset.
Moved ok.
2 Williams’ ELTICHARM CELTIC DANCER AT
JACQBRIDGE. Good headed cream puppy in good coat. Liked her eye and ear
placement. Needs to mature.
