JOINT CAIRN TERRIER CLUBS
DOGS – Congratulations to the Cairn
Terrier Club`s wonderful committee who allowed us to celebrate our centenary
year in style. I am biased of course, but I thought both shows and the
social side were run to perfection. The venues were good and welcoming with the
space we needed. How so many overseas visitors circumnavigated the problems
caused by Iceland`s volcano eruption I shall never know, but then this was
typical of our breed`s character, and undoubtedly these visitors contributed
greatly to the weekend`s atmosphere and success. We also had some very
welcome visitors from our home shores, and it was good to see them enjoying
themselves. I enjoyed watching my co-
V – 7 to 9
years (5) 1
Catto`s Ch/Norw/Dan/Fin/Swed Ch Birselaw Billy Fury, will be 8 in August but
certainly does not look it. Lovely brindle boy, beautiful head, great to see
that very good jaw with big teeth & full dentition, good front, very good
strong hindquarters, good tail, excellent rib, has thickened a little in body
which is not surprising at his age, good bone, legs & feet, coat in good
condition, moves & shows so well. RCC, only beaten by his son; 2 Hogarty`s
Ch/Ir Ch Cadagio As Good As It Gets An.Ch`04, I also liked very much, good
neck, topline & tail, in good coat, good showman. At 7 years old has a
little more scope than 1 but Fury is so well knit & very much the complete
dog; 3 Parker-
V-
MP(5,2) all in the 6 months age
bracket but at different stages of growth. 1 Confue`s Anjofra I`m Not Going; 2 Cameron`s
Stryveling Rocket Man; 3 Inett & Heidecker`s Hydecastle Reg The Rocket. All
had very good dentition. 1 had that little extra length of leg which gave
a better topline on the move, good to go over, nice neck, shoulders, topline
& front, coat in good condition. 2 is very attractive & promising but
dropped a shade in front; 3 had a very good body but is softer all through.
P (9,1) 1 Inett`s Carradines Crackaway Jack, well grown
red br, masculine, very expressive, pleasing neck, shoulders, topline &
tailset, in good coat for age, moved out well but needs to steady in front,
showed steadily. BPD; 2 Felters & Rumens` Landbuck Tillisch, very
attractive light red but carrying too much weight on the day & was
unsettled. Good head, pleasing bone, legs & feet. Will have better days; 3
Percy`s Winetta Sir Percy.
J(2) 1 Weinberger`s Correnie
Tornado, promising light grey, quality head, good length of leg but still at
the legs & wings stage, good topline & tailset, well made hindquarters.
Little too fancy in front movement but that`s his age & pride. A great
character; 2 Lamb & Saltmarsh`s Birselaw Fable, very good coat texture,
pleasing head, not just as good in hindquarters & tail carriage as 1 but
looked well.
Y(9) 1 Theodorsson`s Hjohoo`s Hjo
Are My Gold Nugget, mature wheaten, very stylish, moved & showed well
making the very most of himself, good front, bone, legs & feet, well
ribbed, well set tail with plenty behind it, coat in lovely condition; 2
Shopland`s Cherrycrack Blackadder, younger grey, very good type, lovely head
& expression, good neck & shoulders, nice outline, well made & a
good mover but still needs a little more finish; 3 Warne`s Spirebrooke Dawn
Raider.
N(5,2) 1 Goldfinch`s Kanawha
Kaught In A Draught, only 11 months & still very immature but made on
pleasing lines & moved freely with drive, nice coat texture; 2 Buchan`s
Auchinkyle Super Stan, nice Cairn with good balance in outline, not just as
good in front & a touch bold in eye, good hindquarters; 3 Sinclair`s
Larchlea Hard Day`s Night.
PG(10) 1 Weinberger`s Larchlea
Come Fly With Me to Correnie, I liked this br very much & think he will
have a good future. Good head, pleasing neck, shoulders, topline & tailset.
Very young & needs more maturity but has everything to make a name
for himself; 2 Parker-
ML(1) 1 Wall`s Cloverbrook Ray Of
Sunshine over Shearwater JW, lovely heather br, good head &
expression, pleasing neck, shoulders, topline & tailset, moved & showed
well.
L(9,1) 1 Lindborg &
Nordstrand`s Rasken`s Riding Pawnee, very nice typical red, expressive, good neck,
shoulders & outline, well made firm hindquarters, moved & showed well,
in good coat & condition; 2 Marshall`s Strathgarten Crackerjack, I liked
this red very much, pleasing size, nicely balanced. These 2 behaved badly at
the end but are both nice Cairns; 3 Mosaeley & Inett`s Spawyche Elizabethan
Onyx.
O(14,1) Pollock`s Ch Larchlea
Licence To Thrill at Stanedykes, it is difficult to say who tried harder not to
win, handler or dog! However, I found the dog was the best made, the best
balanced & in the end the best mover, so I was happy to forgive the
lack of attention! A really lovely Cairn, beautifully balanced, no
exaggerations, good head, pleasing neck, shoulders, topline & tailset, good
front & feet, well bodied, good ribs, well made firm hindquarters. CC &
BIS; 2 Templeton`s Ch Larchlea Time To Entertain, I loved this quality dark
grey with his gorgeous head & expression, & excellent coat which is
harsh right down to his tight feet. Very good neck, shoulders, topline
& tailset. I would like a little more width & strength in
hindquarters but a good sensible dog with delightful temperament; 3
Middlehurst`s Ch Zalazar Un Zipped! At Starveren, another lovely dog, fully
mature with very good body, rib & bone & nice firm loin & croup.
SBB(2) 1 B Fable; 2 Ough`s Ocedar
Zephyr, is coming up 7 & is now rather heavy in front, good body, bone
& rib, his red br coat is not at its best but the texture is good. Breeders Group (1) Templeton`s, a very
impressive typy group.

Coleman Hutchinson, Judge
BITCHES
Volcanic eruptions notwithstanding, the judging
appointment I had been greatly anticipating finally arrive on Sunday afternoon,
April 25--the judging of bitches at the second of the Centenary events of The
Cairn Terrier Club. For three days (and three years of planning) the C.T.C.
Committee did an incredible job in every aspect of the celebration. There was
an opening reception on Friday with marvelous displays of historical significance,
a gala dinner on Saturday with entertainment by a piper and harpist, and two
sets of CCs on the weekend. The large hall in Lanark where the shows were held
was impressively decorated with a countless number of yards of plaid cloth
draped over all the balcony railings, making for a beautiful sight. No expense
was spared, and all in attendance seemed to appreciate the C.T.C.'s efforts, no
one more than yours truly, the lone "Yank" judge!
All my anticipation was rewarded with a marvelous
collection of Cairn bitches to judge. Several of the classes proved to be very
challenging due to the depth of quality present. I had to fight back tears when
I saw the Open class, truly the best class of Cairns I've ever judged in 46
years! The majority of the following remarks concern my general impressions.
Balance: In most classes when the entries first moved
around the ring I saw many that are properly balanced and held their toplines
well. Tail carriage and set-on were generally pleasing.
Heads: I've been told by several British Cairn lovers
that there are few good heads to be found, but I must disagree. Heads and
expressions pleased me overall. I saw only one with eyes lighter than desirable
and a few with eyes a bit large and round. Most heads were well-proportioned
skull to muzzle, had good stops, and had proper fill under the eyes. Mouths
were excellent. Ear size and carriage were generally pleasing, although I would
have preferred smaller ears on some.
Structure: I think strides have been made in recent
years to produce more Cairns that are structurally sound. My winners all have
excellent front assemblies with good layback, proper length of upper arms, and
well developed pro sternums. They also have good strong feet and proper rib
cages. The rear angulation on most of the class winners was pleasing with
correct bend of stifle and short hocks, producing sound, powerful movement.
Lack of correct movement has always been a concern, and this entry was no
exception. There were a number of bitches that moved too close behind, some
that moved under themselves ("tummy tappers"), and a few with faulty
front movement, due in several cases to short upper arms. In general, however,
movement was the best I've seen in my numerous visits to the British Isles.
Condition: I really appreciated the wonderful coats on
so many of the exhibits. The texture, density, and length was very pleasing to
me. In the U.S.A., unfortunately, too many Cairns are being shown in short
coats which takes away from the proper rugged look of our breed. I also was
glad to see most all the wheatens and reds had dark ears and points, a breed
characteristic. Many of the bitches were well muscled and fit to work, but a
number were carrying too much weight, taking away from the litheness that is so
important in a Cairn. The excess weight affected their movement adversely.
There were no bitches that were too thin.
In the final decision for Best in Show Mrs. Somerfield
and I agreed we both would have been delighted to award either the dog or the
bitch B.I.S. It was a close call and in the end we were pleased to give the nod
to the Scottish-bred dog, CH. LARCHLEA LICENCE TO THRILL AT STANEDYKES. Reserve
B.I.S. and Best of Opposite Sex went to SWEDISH CH. HJOHOO'S HJOUR LOVE IS MY
LIFE. Best Puppy in Show was STRYVELING SWEET CAROLINE and Best Veteran was the
famous CH. BIRSELAW BILLY FURY that has titles too numerous to note here. We
were in agreement that all the final four matched each other for type, and both
of us wanted to take the puppy home!
Thank you to all who made this occasion possible for
me and to Betty Shaw who was such a helpful and pleasant ring steward.
In Cairnship,
Mrs. Lydia Coleman Hutchinson
Wolfpit Cairns, U.S.A.

feminine, moderate overall, well balanced, constructed so well, showed on her
toes, great coat in prime condition
2. Confue's Anjofra Welcome To La La Land, red, a very
tough decision between 1 & 2, very attractive that will just get better
with age, showed well and covered ground on the move, preferred rear movement
of 1
3. Parker-Tucker's Uniquecottage Sea Breeze, gr. brin.
in excellent coat & condition, moved dead true, showed well, would prefer
slightly smaller ears
Minor Limit (7, 1 a)
Plenty of quality in this class

typey, moved so well due to her excellent shoulders & rear, great topline

3. Confue's Anjofra Me Me Me, wheaten in excellent
coat, lovely pigment
Limit (12, 3 a)
Absolutely gorgeous class
1. Clarke's Conundrum Sweeter For Me For Lentrica, gr.
brin., extremely difficult choice between 1 & 2; I'd love to have both
(that goes for most of my winners!), Winner was in just a wee bit more bloom on
the day, lovely head & expression, showed her heart out the entire class
2. Templeton's Ch Larchlea Can't Remember, dk. brin.,
lovely all over with sound movement
3. Shannon's & Storr's Brendarcy Button It,
wheaten w. dark ears, very worthy competitor, feminine, good tailset &
carriage
Open (19, 4 a)
This was a class to die for, one so filled with
quality animals that I almost couldn't believe my eyes! One gorgeous bitch
after another
1 and BCC. Theodorsson's SU Ch Hjohoo's Hjour Love Is
My Life, gr. brin., just what I love in a Cairn bitch, feminine yet fit to
hunt. There really is nothing I would change about her. In the long run what
finally won the class for her was her floating, ground-covering movement with
perfect, balanced reach and extension due to her beautifully constructed
shoulders and rear. And it came down to a matter of personal preference between
1 & 2, and I chose the more feminine bitch.
2 & RBCC. Short's Ch Glenchess Cut The Mustard
(love that name!), red, shown in top form. So much to admire about this bitch,
soundly put together and there's really nothing I would change about her
either, except to give her slightly less bone as she borders on being
masculine.
3. Theodorsson's SU Ch Hjohoo's I Wanna Be Like You,
wheaten, moved & showed well, lovely head but a bit lazy about using her
ears
Res. Smook-Van Koolbergen's Int Ch Birselaw Emma, grey
that is a past favorite of mine. I still love her but she was in short coat on
the day.
Special Beginners (10, 3 a)
1. Bradshaw's Newfield Dawn Spirit, nice outline, well
balanced
2. Whaites' Svendalens Lucky In Love, attractive head
& expression, preferred balance of 1
3. Sybster Sauvignon
