Three
Counties Championship Show
Wednesday 8th June 2011
My thanks to the exhibitors for
their entries, especially as this was a mid-week show and many exhibitors had
travelled long distances. Because of the heavy showers judging was inside but
fortunately the ring was of good size and meant that movement for good or ill
was easy to assess.
There were many good Cairns in Post Grad, Limit and Open classes
of both sexes. The competition in those classes was strong and on a different
day the placings may have been different. There were a limited number of
puppies entered (especially dogs) perhaps due to the ever rising costs of
entries and travel. I hope there are some good Cairns waiting in the wings at
home to be brought out later as they mature and their elders, in the more
senior classes, leave the stage.
Movement, while seemingly better
in the senior classes, was still somewhat of a problem. I like a Cairn to be
free flowing which is best seen when moving with drive on a loose lead and in a
straight line going towards the judge and away. Several Cairns were pulling on
the lead causing them to move in a crab like fashion. One or two others were
strung up causing their front feet to lift off the ground.
I also like a Cairn to be alert
with a natural inquisitiveness and curiosity about what is going on around
them. Although some Cairns will stand like statues this, for me, isn’t
important, but they should, nevertheless, be aware and responsive to their
handler.
MPD (3, 0 Abs)
1 Newton’s STRATINVER
SPECIFICATION. Balanced cream, 8 ½ months in full coat. He is a big dog for his
age. Big teeth with correct bite. Wayward on the move.
2 Goldfinch’s KANAWHA
WHATATHRILLER. Raw red/brindle baby just 6 months old. Balanced with level topline, big teeth, good eye (shape/colour).
Plenty of time to develop.
3 Lamb & Saltmarsh’s RENSHAW
THERE AND BACK AGAIN
PD (1, 0)
1 Carter’s CARRADINE ALFIE THE
GREAT AT CARERNWLL. Standing alone. 11 ½ months grey/brindle. Liked his reach
of neck, shoulder placement, tailset, topline, coat OK but lacked drive from
the rear.
JD (4,1)
1 Templeton’s LARCHLEA I WANT TO
BREAK FREE. Dark brindle, excellent balance, dead level topline, correct
tailset, standing well forward as he should. Liked his head, eye, mouth, bite,
teeth and his mischievous expression. Very sound mover. Should have a bright
future as he continues to grow and mature.
2 Braybrook’s CLOVERBROOK
CODEBREAKER. Grey upstanding dog in full coat nearly out of Junior. Another
with level topline, proper Cairn head, good jaw, big teeth, ear placement. Not
quite the expression of the winner and less settled on the move but a quality
specimen.
3 Peer’s TWEEDISLE SEA SCOUT
PGD (7,0)
1 Inett & Bambridge’s
CARRADINE CRACKAWAY JACK. Balanced
red/brindle with a good (but short) coat. Moved very well while retaining his
topline. Good head, deep stop, dark eyes of correct shape giving the desired
Cairn expression. Handled well on the table. Res CC.
2 Tutchings’ TRIBANNON GYPSY KING
AT CROWNEAST. Balanced cream up on the leg with good reach of neck, well set on
tail, short of coat. Keen expression and very alert.
3 Confue’s ANJOFRA I’M NOT GOING
JW
LD (8,1)
1 Thompson’s CASTLELINE BANG ON
TIME. Lovely type of wheaten/brindle. Not a big dog (not a problem) but
balanced. Moved very well fore and aft. Reasonable coat and liked his
head/eye/stop/ topline and tailset.
2 Shannon & Storr’s BRENNDARCY
TROUBLE AT MILL. Red/brindle balanced in good coat. Liked his head, topline,
tailset, ear placement. Seemed to be a little lethargic today and lost out on
movement to the first.
3 Catto’s BIRSELAW FOLLOW YOUR
DREAM
OD (7,1) An impressive line up of top quality Cairns.
1 Shopland’s CHERRYCRACK
BLACKADDER. Dark red/brindle masculine workmanlike and balanced Cairn who fits
the standard perfectly. Medium in everything. Good coat, well made through and
through. Liked his head/eye/stop/mouth/bite/neck. Showed well today and moved
with drive and purpose. Delighted to
award him CC and BOB.
2 Weinberger’s CH LARCHLEA COME
FLY WITH ME TO CORRENIE. Similar type to 1. A dark red/brindle dog in lovely
coat of correct length and texture. He has a good head with the correct eye
shape, colour and ear placement giving him that desireable expression. Today he
didn’t move as effortlessly as I would have liked. He is a worthy Champion and pushed hard for the Res CC.
3 Smith’s CH ROCASOVALE RAZZLE
DAZZLE
MPB (4,0)
1 Moseley’s SPAWYCHE ELIZABETHAN
DREAM. Likeable 7 ½ months cream puppy with good reach of neck. Mischevious
expression, sweet head, tail well set on, showy and moved very confidently.
Promising.
2 Shannon & Storr’s BRENNDARCY
SNEDRONNIGEN. Similar type to 1 and only just 6 months. Very much a raw baby
but is balanced and has a good coat. Movement a little erratic and needs time
to develop. One to watch.
3 Ballinger’s CARRADINE MINNIE THE
MOOCHA
PB (6,0)
1 Yates’ & Johnson’s PENDLEY
PLAYAWAY. A very nice cream/brindle quality bitch. Nearly 12 months. In good
coat, balanced. Has a keen expression, nice dark eye and another who handles
well on the table. Good spring of rib, muscled hindquarters which propelled her
with drive. Best Puppy
2 Thompson’s CASTLELINE PEGGY SUE.
A lovely wheaten with an excellent head and good expression, ear placement.
Good coat. Carried herself well and floated around the ring. Pushed 1 hard.
3 Hawkins’ MAZLAR ONCE UPON A
DREAM
JB (6,4)
1 Kinton’s WOODTHPORPE MAYBE THIS
THYME. Balanced grey/brindle with a good head/stop/ear placement who moved
around the ring with drive. Short of coat.
2 Weinberger’s CORENNIE I DO BUT I
DON’T. A nice type of Cairn. Balanced with a good coat, typical head and wicked expression. Decided
not to move well so lost out to the class winner.
PGB (16,3)
1 Dolan’s GLENROOD MASQUERADE.
Quality wheaten in good coat, excellent condition all round. Liked her reach of
neck, topline, tailset. Good head/eye. Alert, showed and moved well. I see she
has the same sire as the BOB winner and is not yet two years old so another to
watch with interest.
2 Yates’ & Johnson’s BIRSELAW
ONLY MAKE BELIEVE TO PENDLEY. Heavier build than the winner but a balanced,
sound grey/wheaten. Liked her tail set, topline, bite, teeth and in good coat.
3 Osborn’s TWESLAM WINTER MAGIC
LB (11,3). The first four in the class displayed all the
qualities one would expect at this level.
1 Harding’s CANNWOOD REMEMBER
HOLLY JW. A wheaten of excellent type. Superb balance, so feminine with a
beautiful head and expression. Ears with lovely dark points and a dead level
topline. Coat in good condition and presented to perfection. Her movement was
true and she showed all out to win CC.
2 Catto’s BIRSELAW ANY DREAM WILL
DO. Heavier built than the winner but another class Cairn from this kennel.
Lovely wheaten in full coat with a beautiful head giving that essential Cairn
expression. Pleasure to see moving
across the ring showing her level topline, spot on tail set. Well deserved the
Res CC.
3 Osborn’s TWESLAM MAID BY MAGIC
JW
OB (8,1)
1 Hughes’ & Hooton’s GYNCAIRN
ROYAL VELVET AT PENTICHARM. Well presented grey/brindle with a stunning
outline, beautiful shape, balanced. Very alert, in tune with her handler. Best
mover in the class. As I said in my introduction, on another day this could well have been the CC winner
2 Shearsmith’s CLOVERBROOK CREAM
O’THE CROP AT EBORVALE. On entering the ring I thought this might have been my
winner. She is in good coat, has an excellent head, dark eye and wicked
expression. Movement, though good, was not as positive as the class winner. A
sound, quality Cairn.
