CAIRN
TERRIERS Many thanks
go to all the exhibitors for a good entry and to my most able
stewards. Such a pity that the weather did not hold out for the bitch
limit and open classes and we had to retire to the wet weather tent where the
conditions were not very favourable. I must
admit I was rather disappointed with some of the quality in the lower
classes of both sexes. Where are the lovely heads which typify
our beautiful breed? I saw a few with long forefaces and lack of
"stop" as well as eyes which were round and rather prominent
instead of being "slightly sunken" as is required by our
standard. I did not get a "buzz" when looking at a lot of the
heads on the table and I do like to get an emotional experience when judging.
But on the plus side it was nice to see so many with good big teeth for a
change with the correct scissor bite. I found only a couple of cairns
today with a bite almost verging on being level. There were
many exhibits whose coats were way past their best so their owners should not
have been too disappointed when they did not achieve the result they
might otherwise have expected. Having said
all that the top bitch classes were the highlight of my day and my placings were somewhat challenging. Some beautiful
bitches who on another day I would have been proud to have awarded a CC
to were in very tough competition and the final decisions, inevitably,
came down to movement. If anyone
was aggrieved and thought they had been hard done by then may I suggest that
they get someone else to handle their dog for them so that they can see
for themself what their dog's hind movement is like. Bitch CC
and BOB went to Waugh and Carlton-Smith's (red brindle) Tribannon Guardian Angel. I did get a "buzz"
from this one. Such a lovely feminine head - deep stop, neat ears,
bewitching eyes. I loved her perfect balance with good neck and
shoulders, level topline, correct tailset and, what is more, she had true
parallel movement which clinched it for her. Well handled. My type of
cairn. Dog CC was
awarded to Braybrook's (dark brindle) Ch. Cloverbrook Codebraker.
Beautiful head and expression and another "buzz" moment for me. He
also has all the attributes needed to be a champion and he certainly has
them in spades. Masculine in every way and, if I may so, he is "all
cairn" and so typical of the breed. Sometimes he can be a bit wayward
for his handler and although I thought he would have been my BOB he
"blew it" when it mattered and so had to settle for BOS. A
very worthy champion Reserve dog
CC went to Roberts' Canwood Cut Above. Very nice
cream in good order. Typical head an expression. In excellent
coat. Level topline and correct tailset. In the final
analysis this award was between him and one of my favourites, Ch. Cherrycrack Black Adder who was also looking good, but
just preferred the younger dog today. Reserve
bitch CC was Harding's (cream) the lovely Ch. Cannwood
Remember Holly. She was my best puppy at Manchester a couple of years
ago and I have been thrilled to follow her many fine wins, including BOB at
Crufts .Super head - femininity personified -and makes a beautiful picture
standing. Handled to perfection as always. What more can I say
that has not already have been written about this beautiful bitch. BEST PUPPY
went to Patten and Inett's
(silver brindle) Carradine Magic
Penny. What a charmer! Loved her head with her quizzical
expression. Very nice pattern, keeping her topline on the move with tail just right. Very promising - I could have
taken her home. BEST DOG
PUPPY went to Currie's (red brindle) Stirlingview
Stunning. Very nice dog indeed who, when settled, looked super. Very
good masculine head, good front, nice reach of neck with level topline.
I liked him very much and, despite his young age, even brought him out in
the dog challenge for further consideration. But, sadly, in
the challenge for best puppy he also "blew it". MPD (7,1a) 1. Bateman
& Gompels' Carradine
Terries Tipple. Wh/br
with a nice head who went round the ring maintaining a good profile.
Liked his topline and tailset. Handled and moved very well. 2.
Shannon & Storr's Brenndarcy
Borgen. Appealing cream with good head and
dark eye. Very good mouth. Liked his clean neck and
shoulders. Promising pup and close up to winner. 3.
Waugh's Tribannon War Dance. PD (4,0a) 1. Stirlingview Stunning. 2. Coffell's Cloverbrook Crusader
at Ometto. Grey brindle standing well
forward. Good head and dark eye as one expects from his breeding.
Could not match showmanship of winner today. 3.
Brown's Bencanna Cockney Rebel. ND (1) 1. Saich's Lindcoly Dark
Knight. Grey brindle with a very good shape. Liked his length of
leg. Pity his coat was on the blow and although he stood alone he well
deserved his win. GD (6, 3a) 1. Cannwood Cut Above. 2.
Byrne and Inett's Carradine
Brian The Lion. Gr/br. with lots to like and I can appreciate why many judges
put him up. Just a shade too long in neck and back for me. 3. Lifton's Liffycairn Cumon U Irons. PGD (7,3a) 1.
Parker-Tucker's Uniquecottage Jumbuck. Cream well
up to size with a lovely head. In full bloom. I have seen him
throw it all away but today he behaved himself and looked good. 2. Goud's Vale of Atholl's Shaggy
Grey Buck. Wh. with attractive dark points. In good coat and a
good "hand-span" of neck which I like to have. Just needs
more confidence in showmanship which hopefully will come. 3.
Morley's Kedvaiy Locamation. LD (4, 1a) 1.
Parker-Tucker's Uniquecottage Raleigh. Dk.br. of
very good type. No mistaking his gender. Presented a nice picture
in profile. When I judged this class I thought he might have been in
contention for top honours. 2.
Warne's Spirebrook Dawn Raider. Dk.br. A
dog that can never be overlooked. Good head with plenty of stop. Liked
his movement. In good coat and show condition. 3.
Morley's Kedvaiy Locamotion. OD (6. 1a) 1.
Ch. Cloverbook Codebreaker. 2. Shopland's Ch. Cherrycrack
Blackadder. As
mentioned, he is a favourite of mine and today he looked good with plenty of
head furnishings and showing a lovely profile. A very worthy champion. 3, Weinberger's Ch. Larchlea
Come Fly With Me To Correnie. Another lovely
specimen and a worthy champion. MPB (7, 1a) 1. Pett's Doonrae Lexicon of Love. Red/br Another with attractive dark points. Nicely balanced
and a good prospect but did not quite have showmanship today of
the following class winner to gain best bitch puppy. Her time will
come. 2.
Keeves' Seveek I Dreamed A Dream. Rich red baby, and she looked a baby today but I loved her shape
and she was in a very good harsh jacket. Pleased to see good big teeth
with scissor bite. If she matures as I hope she will then here is
another good prospect. 3. Saich's Lindcoly I Just Think
I'm Free. PB (6, 1a) 1. Carradine Magic Penny. 2.
Currie's Stirlingview Surprise. Red/br. Nice
pup but not the head of winner, but she performed well enough for this
placing. 3. Saich's Lindcoly I Just Think
I'm Free. JB (4, 1a). 1.
Shaw's Honeyhall Hearsay. Wh.br. who took my
eye when she entered the ring. Very pretty head which one has come to
expect from this kennel. Clean neck and shoulders and she held her level
topline on the move. Such a pity that her coat had blown today -
otherwise, who knows? 2. Inett, Harrison, King & Leighton's Carradine I Am Florence With Harkinleigh. Another
nice grey brindle which I very much liked. Appealing dark points and
"carrot" tail. Correct length of back making
balanced picture. Unlucky to meet winner. 3.
Hacker's Teddeana Ashana. GB (3, 1a) 1.
Shannon & Storr's Brenndarcy
Snedronningen. Very nice cream standing well
forward. Very good make and shape. Nice harsh jacket and the
whole package appealed. I am pleased to note that this exhibitor is
breeding to a pattern which means that one can almost tell it is a "Brenndarcy" without the owner being there. 2.
Parker-Tucker's Uniuecottage Snowy Egret.
Cream well up to size who decided not to co-operate with her handler
today. Nice head and in good coat. PGB (6, 03) 1. Kinton's Woodthorpe Maybe This
Thyme. Grey br.
who demands attention when she enters the ring. Dead level back, tailset just
right. Typical head with dark eye. Very well handled. Maybe
NEXT time? 2.
Dolan's Castleline Peggy Sue. Cream with
a very pretty head. In good coat. Presentation and handling all
first class. Dark points would complete the picture. 3.
Carter & Shannon's Brenndarcy Dizzie Lizzie. LB (9, 3a) 1. Tribannon Guardian Angel. 2.
Hewitt's Littleacorn Stay In Touch. Grey br. who I was very impressed with. Nice feminine head
with dark points. Plenty of neck and good length of leg. Covered
the ground really well. A very nice bitch. 3.
Warne's Cloverbrook Carousel At Spirebrook. OB (10, 2a) 1.
Ch. Cannwood Remember Holly. 2.
Shaw's Honeyhall Hi 'N' Dry. Wh.br. and
another good one from this kennel. This is another exhibitor who has
bred consistently to a pattern and one can tell it is a "Honeyhall" without the owner being present. From the
same mould as the winner of previous class and almost same remarks apply. 3.
Dolan's Ch. Glenrood Masquerade. A bitch I
have long admired from the ringside. Another very worthy champion. BILL
