Critique
I would like
to thank both Birmingham National for inviting me to judge their well-run show
and my stewards who were most efficient. The entry was not huge, 49, but with
only one absentee on the day. I was not disappointed with my entry as
somewhere around 15 Cairns could not enter as I bred, own, or groom them. I consider it
a great honour to judge other exhibitors dogs. I have grown up showing dogs
and too many times I have seen exhibitors being placed before dogs, this is
an abuse of our right as judges. It is an honour to judge and should be
treated with respect. This critique is the forum for others to understand my
decisions. It is easy to sit ringside and place dogs but when you get “hands
on” it is a very different matter; you see dentition, eye colour, ear shape
and size, muzzle strength and what is under the coat! So, on to the
Cairns that I judged. I found far too
many dirty teeth; Cairns are Terriers and dirty teeth are just not
acceptable. We have to watch size, far too many are getting too big, we have
to remember we are a low legged breed. Neither are we a cobby breed, Cairns
should have length of back, enabling agility. Narrow heads;
our standard calls for broad skull and strong jaw. When you place your hands either side of a Cairns head you
should feel a strong, but not large (there is a difference) skull with width
and also the muzzle should be powerful, how can a terrier deal with its prey
with a weak jaw? Front
assembly: our standard calls for a dog standing well forward on fore paws.
That to me, means a Cairn that has some of its body in front of its forelegs,
with so many this is not the case and
front movement consequently paddled, without forward reach. Cairns should
be shown in good hard condition; too many exhibitors confuse this with
thin. It is a joy to handle a terrier
in good hard condition and comes from correct feeding and exercise, not from
starving your dog. Presentation;
Cairns are not and should never be a trimmed terrier. Obtaining that natural,
well presented look takes a lot of consistent hard work. I didn’t find any
smelly nor dirty dogs. However, I did see some serious presentation errors;
too much assistance with helping head furnishings stand up. I am not against
the use of products but be discrete, for example, chalk and soap on a dark
dog is a no go, it can be seen and feels crispy in the coat! Extreme
scissoring around feet, which made them look long and narrow, it is alien,
and feet should be round and cat like.
By scissoring back the feet you are highlighting any hidden problems. Handling is
such a bugbear of mine, a triangle has three sides it is not a loop! The
purpose of moving dogs in a triangle is to assess their movement fore and aft
and in profile, giving the opportunity to see forward reach and rear drive. A
loop does not necessitate this. To findings
that are more positive. I was thrilled with the puppy classes, not large in
number but great in quality, the Minor Puppy bitch class was of high quality
and I would be pleased to own any of the four present, it was really just
splitting hairs between them. This bodes well for the future. There were many
good quality Cairns present. The
lovely almond eye was present in so many Cairns, eye colour was mostly
correct. Dentition was good, toplines and tailsets were mostly correct. Tails
that were lovely and substantial were present in abundance with only one
kinky tail! Nails should be kept short as most appeared to be. Pigment was
good. MPD (3,0) 1st
Currie’s Stirlingview Stunning A smart young
pup of correct size. Excellent head with true eye shape, colour and
expression. Correct bite and lovely large teeth. Correctly made throughout.
Confident young man who showed and moved well. 2nd
Bradshaw’s Newfield Harvest Moon This young
man was a bit on the lean side and longer cast than 1st,
nevertheless he presented a smart outline, a very confident showman for his
age and has a lovely head and expression. Just preferred size and balance of
1st. Both should have bright futures 3rd
Adams’ Werac That’s The One TAF, enjoying his day out with a happy
disposition JD (2,0) 1st
Petts & Shannon’s Geordie Boy Smart outline
and super showman. Excellent head with good width to skull and jaw, strong
muzzle with correct dentition set square to jaw, coat short but of correct
texture and movement satisfactory 2nd
Roberts’ Cannwood Cut Above Proved a
difficult boy today being upset by the fan in the ceiling. Well balanced but
out of a larger mould than 1. Moved well and in great body condition,
preferred head and expression of 1 PGD (4,0) 1st
Cameron’s Stryveling Rocket Man (RCC) Excellent for
size and balance, moved well with drive from behind and true in front, most
outstanding typical expression and beautiful head. Good bone, never stopped
showing 2nd
Brennan’s Milindack What News Watson Lovely showy
male of decent size, shown in good condition and lovely dark pigment for his
wheaten colour 3rd
Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Renshaw There and Back Again LD (4,0) 1st
Braybrook’s Cloverbrook Codebreaker (DCC & BOB) An all-round
lovely male, good for size, typical expression and when settled moved
soundly. Shown in good condition.
Correct mouth, lovely eye and expression. Well placed ears and good
strong but not large head. Correct shoulders, good depth of rib, medium
length of rib and loin producing the overall correct balance. Correct rear end with good angulation and
tailset. A strong masculine dog. A
pleasure to award his 3rd CC together with BOB 2nd
Percy’s Winetta Sir Percy A good
showman in lovely coat and condition, not as animated as I have seen him in
the past but he has many virtues: correct typical head, good front and rear
assembly producing satisfactory movement. Excellent for size. Unlucky to meet
1 who was in such top form. 3rd
Robinson’s Cruzo Bilbo Baggins If he were
out of a smaller mould with a slightly more masculine head, perfection would
have been born OD (4,0) Four
very good males who have changed places many times. 3rd and 4th
are both very good males but couldn’t match the overall togetherness of 1st
and 2nd. 1st
Felters & Rumens Ch Landbuck Tillisch Correct for
size and balance, this male has an exceptional head that is so typical, he
was the best mover in this class but his coat was past its best and together
with his loss of interest in the challenge meant he had to miss out on top
honours today 2nd
Shannon & Storr’s Ch Brenndarcy
Trouble at Mill Good showman
with with typical expression, preferred the showmanship and substance of 1 3rd
Warne’s Spirebrook Dawn Raider A handsome
male but lost interest in showing 4th
Smith’s Ch Rocasovale Razzle Dazzle Not moving as
he used to but nonetheless a worthy Champion. MPB (5,1)
This was a lovely class of four bitches, I was pleased with the quality of
all four and it was really splitting hairs between them all. 1st
Currie’s Stirlingview Surprise Dark brindle
bitch with lovely sweet feminine head and such a typical expression with
wicked eye. Well put together. I would describe her movement as puppy loose
and hope that she tightens with time. A lovely promising puppy showing so
confidently for her handler. 2nd
Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Bit
of Bother Another very
smart and showy puppy moving well for her age. Just preferred wicked
expression of 1 today but another
very promising puppy 3rd
Bradshaw’s Newfield Michaelmas Daisy A lovely
feminine puppy, just needing time which she obviously has 4th
Osborn’s Tweslam Thistle Be Magic Narrow
throughout but that is nothing to worry about as she has time. A very promising collection of lovely pups PB (1,0) 1st
Tutchings’ Crowneast Midsomer Florey Smart puppy with
a lovely outline, in need of a new jacket which is why she didn’t win BPB,
very pretty and feminine, lovely dark points, correct topline and tailset JB (2,0) 1st
Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Snedronningen 2nd
Roberts’ Cannwood Continue The Dream Lovely
bitches to go over and similar remarks apply, both having good feminine
heads, well placed shoulders, correct toplines and tailsets, 1st
was out of the smaller preferred mould. PGB (12,0)
The 6 that I shortlisted were all of excellent quality. 1st
Osborn’s Tweslam Winter Magic A very well
balanced bitch, the soundest mover in this strong class, in lovely coat and
condition, typical head and expression with correct eye shape and colour,
showed all out but couldn’t match the style of the CC & RCC winners in
the challenge, nevertheless a superb bitch and although it’s a cliché, I am
sure her time will come 2nd
Kinton’s Woodthorpe Maybe This Thyme A very good
quality bitch, just not quite as feminine in head as 1st, soundly
made and well presented, good mover and typical throughout 3rd
Percy’s Winetta Miss Independent Very feminine
but coat past its best 4th
Carter & Shannon’s Brenndarcy Dizzie Lizzie Absolutely
feminine throughout, needs to tighten in front 5th
Warne’s Cloverbrook Carousel at Spirebrook JW A lovely
bitch such a shame she lost interest and her coat was past its best LB (7,0) This
was one of the best classes I have had the pleasure of judging both in the UK
and overseas. All 7 were out of the top drawer and all deserve a mention:
unplaced dogs Littleacorn Stay in Touch is a beautifully made bitch with a
sweet head and expression but couldn’t match the overall body and coat
condition of the winners today. Woodthorpe Playin for Thyme, out of a larger
mould than her kennel mate placed 2nd in PGB, again, she is very
well made and I liked her a lot but she couldn’t match the winners for
femininity today. Although they had to go unplaced today they are both
quality bitches. 1st
Waugh & Carlton-Smith’s Tribannon Guardian Angel (CC) This bitch
just oozes Cairn, she is so typical. A lovely head and sweet feminine
expression, well placed ears which are small and neat, lovely eye shape and
colour, correct pigment, correct front assembly, good depth of rib and length
of loin resulting in correct balance with sufficient length of back, lovely
topline and tailset. She carried her tail correctly at 10 past. She has
everything where it should be, presented in workmanlike condition. 2nd
Cameron’s Stryveling Sweet Caroline Sweet
feminine head with lovely typical expression, good length of neck set on well
laid back shoulders, strongly considered for RCC but just couldn’t match finish of RCC winner today, unlucky to
meet 1 who was in such fine form today, a lovely bitch 3rd
Braybrook’s Cloverbrook Xtrafactor Another one
out of the top drawer and sister (from an earlier litter) to DCC. Lovely
shape and conformation, just felt that 1st and 2nd
today had the edge on femininity 4th
Yates & Johnson’s Pendley Playaway A lovely bitch,
presented and handled very well, moved well but just not the head of her
tough competitors today 5th
Smith’s Anjofra Plum Tart at Rocasovale Although down
the line today, she is a lovely quality bitch, sound and balanced. I don’t
mind her naughty behaviour but today she was competing with the best of the
best and ringcraft matters OB (5,0)
Another outstanding class with five good quality bitches, each one having
many attributes 1st
Owen’s Honeyhall Handful at Caldwell (RCC) Presented
such a typical picture when standing and showing, moving true fore and aft
and lovely to go over with everything where it should be, lovely head and
expression, correct neck and shoulders, level topline and correct tailset.
She won this lovely class on her overall soundness and femininity 2nd
Shearsmith’s Cloverbrook Cream O’The Crop at Eborvale An old
favourite of mine so soundly made throughout but in tough competition today.
A quality bitch 3rd
Thomas’ Tycadno Starlet A lovely
bitch that put on a good performance just not sparkling today as I have seen
her do in the past 4th
Dolan’s Ch Glenrood Masqerade A worthy
champion but not the coat and condition of the other winners today 5th
Osborn’s Tweslam Maid by Magic Shown in good
coat and condition, moving soundly but not as feminine as her class mates Dawn Inett |
