A big *Thank You” to Graham Peers for Photographs
Y I had 2 excellent stewards who made my
job a lot easier. As others have said
before me quality in most of the males (my top winners were the exception) is
sadly lacking. Up to Limit Dog I
could count the quality exhibits on one hand. Quality aside, I cannot understand why someone would incur the
expenditure of attending Crufts with a dirty and unkempt Cairn. There were at least 2 exhibits whose
construction was good and they were of a nice type but I could not place them
because they were not groomed in any way.
My hands were itching to tidy them up and make them look better. Bitches were much better. At one time the most
worrying feature was movement, but I do think that since I last judged, heads
are a big concern. Skulls are
becoming flatter, with too wide ear sets and many lacked the deep stop which
is so essential in our breed. I found
many eyes which were round, too dark and protruding, (boot button eyes), this
gives an alien expression. Lack of brisket is
something else which worries me. In
some cases I could hardly fit my hand underneath and so was not surprised to
find narrow movement in front. A Cairn should be
balanced and a few were not, there should be adequate daylight underneath,
little short legs will not do for me. Veteran D (2, 1A) 1ST Middlehurst’s Ch Cannwood As If By
Magic To Starveren Jw. Must admit that he is
an old favourite of mine, I gave him a CC back in 2007. He still excels in head, having that
lovely deep stop, short muzzle and expression, and conformation and he can
still move better than most of the Cairns in the ring today. He is well
balanced with a correct tailset. Lovely harsh coat, well presented. Still enjoys showing. A credit to the
breed. Spec Puppy D
(2) 1ST Petts & Shannon’s Geordie Boy Well balanced brindle
of nice type. Attractive head, good reach and flow of neck. Conformation A1. Level topline, kept on the move. Strong in rear. Well
presented and handled. Just needs to
tighten up in front. 2ND Currie’s Stirlingview Stunner Another dark brindle,
not quite the head of winner, lacking in stop. Good harsh coat.
Tailset spoilt overall appearance.
Moved OK behind. Spec Jun D (6)
1ST Roberts’ Cannwood Cut Above Cream with masculine
head & dark points. More furnishings
would complete the picture. Carries
his head well. Good reach of neck,
not stuffy in any way. Has good bone. Strong back & level topline. Moved true both ways, very attentive to
handler. Has potential. 2ND Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Renshaw There
And Back Again Grey brindle, very
typy and well balanced. Best of heads
with a good deep stop & correct eye shape and colour. Level topline. In good double coat.
Showed well. Preferred front
movement of winner. 3RD Fyfe’s Andrum Hawkeye Strong, masculine head
on this red. Good mouth. Good depth
of rib and well angulated rear. Tail
bang on top. Moved OK. I thought he could do with a bit more body and I
preferred balance of no. 2. Yearling D (3) Poor class for a Yearling class 1ST Peers’ Tweedisle Sea Scout Smart, well presented
wheaten with dark points. Well
balanced, level topline. Tail set OK. Positioned himself well showing off his
virtues and in particular his bend of stifle. Moved OK. Would like a bit more body and masculinity. 2ND Carter’s Carradine Alfie The Great
At Carernwil Grey brindle with a
most expressive head. Would prefer
more body and he needs to tighten up in front movement. 3RD Fortune’s Eglish Spitting Image With
Essdeeeff Red, head OK but needs
more stop. I think he has been in the
biscuit barrel which resulted in him moving wide front and rear. Post Grad D
(13, 1A) 1ST Cameron’s Stryveling Rocket Man Quality male of
correct size. Attractive but
masculine head. Just adequate length
of neck. Sound throughout with well
muscled rear and good bend of stifle.
Kept his topline on the move.
Well presented & handled. The best mover in this class. 2ND Lifton’s Liffycairn Cumon U Irons Smart, typy, well
presented and balanced grey brindle.
In excellent coat and condition.
Good head, adequate bone. Straight front. Showed well. 3RD Goud’s Vale Of Atholl's Shaggy Grey
Buck [Atc Ak00244nld] Wheaten with most
desirable dark points. A shade
smaller than 1 and 2 but his obvious quality could not be overlooked. Sound conformation, correct tailset and
good bend of stifle. Happy
temperament for all to see. Well
handled. Just preferred masculinity
of 1 and 2. Limit D (10) 1ST Braybrook’s Cloverbrook Codebreaker
(DCC) Quality grey brindle
with the most attractive, masculine head with dark points. Broad, slightly domed skull, correctly
placed ears. Deep stop, short
foreface. Good mouth. A very strong male with good bone. Well balanced with a level topline, nice
flow of neck, well laid shoulders, good bend of stifle. Profuse double coat, well presented. Moved
out well. 2ND Percy’s Winetta Sir Percy Smart, quality
exhibit, a shade smaller than winner.
Another one with a good head.
Sound and well balanced. In good
coat and condition. Preferred length
of neck and masculinity of winner. 3RD Thompson’s Castleline Bang On Time
Taf This lad had a cheeky
expression, highlighted by his dark mask.
Wonderful! A lovely dog to go
over on the table. Sound throughout. However, looked stuffy in neck because he
had so much hair left on. Very
profuse coat. Moved OK and showed
well. Open D (14, 1A) – An excellent class with regrettably many good dogs leaving
without an award. 1ST Weinberger’s Ch Larchlea Come Fly
With Me To Correnie RCC This dark brindle male
has that natural show stance which is bred in and is so highly sought after
because it makes the exhibitor’s job so much easier. He showed himself off to perfection. He stood four square holding his head in
just the right position. Not a small
one but so well balanced with adequate bone and a good, straight front. Very
well presented. Moved true. Hard decision for CC, just preferred head
and overall size of CC winner. 2ND Shannon & Storr’s Ch Brenndarcy
Trouble At Mill A smaller version of
winner, similar type. Medium
throughout, nothing overdone. Sound
throughout and shown in profuse jacket.
Lively showman, moved steadily.
On another day 1 and 2 could have changed places. 3RD King & Leighton’s Ch Carradine
Night Listener At Harkinleigh Upstanding dark
brindle in hard condition. Looks as
though he could easily do a day’s work without knowing that he had done
it. Attractive masculine head, good
depth of brisket, level topline, well set on tail. Very well handled and
showed exceptionally well to gain this award in this tough class. Good Cit D (3) 1ST Morley’s Kedvaiy Locamotion Smart and showy with a
lovely temperament. Good head. In excellent harsh coat. Moved OK 2ND Keeves & Bennett’s Seveek Who
Dares Wins Grey brindle, leggier
and bigger than winner. Expressive
head. Showed very well indeed. 3RD Keeves’ Seveek Dare Devil Nice sized red. Sound throughout but would prefer a
stronger head. In between jackets. Veteran B (3) 1ST Burgin’s Curtisey Foreign Affair At
Carradine 8 year old dark
brindle. Nice broad skull, correct
eye giving lovely expression. Dense
coat of correct texture. Showed very
well. 2ND McIntyre’s Beanoak Snug In The Blanket Another dark brindle,
similar in type to winner. A
confident and friendly Cairn with correct double coat. Enjoying herself and showing well. 3RD Short’s Ch Glenchess Golden Wings An old favourite of
mine, red with a lovely harsh coat but today looked and felt rather heavy
which spoilt her overall balance making her short in neck. However she can still show the younger
ones how to move correctly. Spec Puppy B
(8, 3a) 1ST Clarke’s Lentrica Sweet Sensation Attractive feminine
head, alert and cheeky expression.
Nice arch to her neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Level topline, strong hindquarters with
good bend of stifle. Shown in profuse
coat. Showed like a veteran, very
attentive to her handler for one so young.
Moved out effortlessly around the ring on a loose lead. BPIB 2ND King, Leighton, Inett’s Carradine I
Am Florence With Harkinleigh Dark brindle, taller
on the leg than winner and shown in short coat which highlighted her length
of leg. Absolutely level topline. Most feminine head. Good mover with strong rear drive. 3RD Hacker’s Teddeana Ashana Smart, well balanced
red. Not as strong in head as 1 &
2, stop could be better. Moved Ok,
well handled, showed well. Spec Jun B (5) 1ST Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy
Snedronningen Very showy and smart
cream. Says “Just look at me!” and as
a result will always be in contention for a high class placing. Well balanced and feminine. Alert expression, keen eye. Stood well forward and has a nice flow of
neck into smooth shoulders. Liked
her. 2ND Roberts’ Cannwood Continue The Dream Slightly larger but
still well balanced with a clean outline. Oozes femininity, lovely head and
eye. Well sprung deep rib, level
topline. Moved freely with drive from
rear. Winner showed better. 3RD Jones’ Strathinver Simply Florrie Lovely type, a nice
sized bitch with those most sought after dark points. Attractive in head with a good reach of
neck. Moved soundly, very attentive to handler. Yearling B (12,
1A) 1ST Dolan’s Castleline Peggy Sue Well presented, smart
cream, nice size and well balanced.
Level topline and good tailset, carried her tail perfectly. Good
rapport with handler. Moved true both ways.
In good coat and condition. 2ND Kinton’s Woodthorpe Maybe This Thyme Similar type to winner
but not quite in as good a jacket.
Excellent mouth. Good depth of
chest and bend of stifle. Another
sound mover. 3RD Culliford’s Brenndarcy Maid In
Heaven Confident, friendly
cream. Ultra smart and one who moved
particularly well. Lovely harsh coat,
just needed more coat on tail to complete the picture. Post Grad B
(17, 3A) 1ST Cameron’s Stryveling Sweet Caroline The best mover in this
class, free flowing and reached out well in front and moved with good drive
from the rear. One I have watched
with interest from her puppy days and she did not disappoint me on the table,
lovely to go over. Nice size, well balanced,
nothing overdone or exaggerated. In
good coat and condition, very attentive to handler. A quality bitch. 2ND Hewitt’s Littleacorn Stay In Touch Workmanlike is how I
would describe her. Grey brindle who
had excellent construction. Lovely
flow of neck into well laid shoulders, level topline and a good bend of
stifle. Showed happily and move
soundly both ways. 3RD Brennan’s Milindack Miss Marple Dark brindle, excelled
in head and expression. Nice broad
skull but still feminine. Keen
eye. Well sprung, deep rib. Dense, profuse double coat. Reached out well in front, good rear
drive. Limit B (9) 1ST Smith’s Anjofra Plum Tart At
Rocasovale Typical Cairn as
regards the “fearless and gay” disposition.
Another I have watched with interest from the ringside from her puppy
days. Liked her head very much, the eyes say it all. Her head is strong without losing
femininity. Good reach of neck,
soundly made throughout. Needed time
to settle but when she did she moved soundly. Showed well, a quality bitch. 2ND Inett’s Carradine Come On Irene Jw Dark brindle, in
excellent coat and condition. Good
head, lovely straight front, level topline, carried her tail well. Very showy and well handled. Preferred winner’s length of neck. 3RD Shaw’s Honeyhall High N Dry Cream with the most
attractive of heads, lovely dark points and very well presented. Well balanced with a good bend of
stifle. Moved with drive from the
rear but today not quite so positive in front as I would like. Lively showgirl. Open B (14, 3A) All exhibits placed
down to VHC were of very high quality and on another day could so easily have
changed places. A lovely class to
judge 1ST Harding’s Ch Cannwood Remember Holly
Jw Very showy, quality,
bitch. Feminine throughout and not
overdone in any way. Lovely head,
deep stop, correct eye giving that typical expression. Straight front, nice depth of brisket,
level topline, strong, correctly angulated hind quarters. Tail carried well. Correct size, moved effortlessly around
the ring, keeping her feet close to the ground. Loved her. Stayed for the group and was pleased to see that she
kept on showing her heart out and her movement was a credit to the breed. CC
& BOB 2ND Thomas’ Tycadno Starlet Grey brindle, another
I have watched with interest since she first came out. Beautiful head, nice
arch to her neck flowing into clean, well laid shoulders. Correct, medium
length of back. Excellent mover. A very happy girl who wagged her tail all
the time. Wish she were mine. RCC 3RD Dolan’s Ch Glenrood Masqerade Very smart and well
presented exhibit who showed to perfection.
Lovely expressive head, nice depth of chest and spring of rib. Level topline kept on the move. Sound and true mover. I was splitting hairs between 1 and 2 but
just preferred the length of back of 2. Good Cit B (3) 1ST Ballinger’s Carradine Minnie The
Moocha Dark brindle, lovely
make and shape. Feminine head. Very well presented. Lovely temperament, best mover in the
class, sound both ways. 2ND Byrne’s Little Miss Tonka Cream with a lovely
harsh coat. Good length of back with
level topline and correct tailset.
Nicely presented and at one with her handler. Needs more head furnishings to complete
the picture. 3RD Williams’ Curtisey Joint Venture Typy dark brindle with
a lovely harsh coat. A very happy
showgirl, confident and friendly. Linda Firth –Judge |
