CAIRN TERRIER A,
17/10/2012
The Cairn Terrier
Association held a ch show where BIS was Ch Glenrood Masqerade; RBIS, Ch
Landbuck Tillisch; BP, Carradine In Love With Amy; & BV Glenrood Magic
Pipit. I can only say that since
my last judging appointment in the breed the quality of males has not
improved at all. Apart from the senior classes there are very few in the
mid-range of classes with sufficient quality to become stud dogs of the
future. Many were far too big, much bigger than the Standard states! Breeders
need to be more selective in their breeding & choice of males they keep.
At 6 months they should get someone with experience in the breed to evaluate
their puppy & if not of a high quality, they should not keep it – hard, I
know, but it does improve the overall quality of the breed. Bitches were of a much
higher quality & I was splitting hairs in some classes. But there is no
point mating a quality bitch to a mediocre male! Heads are still mixed in
quality, many had forefaces that were too long & snipey, mouths were
generally good. Eyes are starting to become too large, they should be medium
in size. I thought necks, shoulders & fronts had improved overall, but
that’s no excuse to become complacent about them. Bodies concerned me: quite
a number are lacking in the correct spring of ribs, being slab sided &
narrow throughout. Hindquarters are still in need of serious improvement; my
winners moved well. There were a few ‘gay’ tails & coats were variable as
always, a few had excessive grooming & others required more. Many
handlers let their dogs down – you need to find the correct pace for your dog
& go at their optimum pace. My comments are meant to be constructive, not
actively showing in this breed anymore does not mean I don’t care about this
lovely breed! V (2) 1 Dolan’s Glenrood
Magic Pipit, 14 years! This wheaten girl truly belies her age, behaves like a
junior showing herself off very well, beautiful well balanced head with a
lovely dark expressive eye, neat well placed ears, good neck & shoulders,
good body, well made hindquarters & correct tailset, liked her size &
balance, in lovely coat, well presented, moved soundly. BV; 2 Culliford’s Ch
Brenndarcy Be Pop Deluxe, wheaten girl with very nice head, well balanced
throughout, mature body, good mover both ways, in a decent coat, showed well.
MPD (2) 1 Waite’s
Svendalens Snow Knight, wheaten, pleasing head, dark eye & well placed
ears, excels in reach of neck, good shoulder angulation, correct body &
balance, nice turn of stifle with correct tailset, in good coat. Would just
like a little more width behind which should come with maturity, already big
enough; 2 Day’s Cherrycrack Ludo at Trekhilli, another one up to size, nice
head & expression but could improve in width of muzzle. Nice body, just a
little taller on the leg than 1. Well made behind & moved soundly there.
Needs to tighten in front movement. In nice coat & condition. PD (5) 1 Shannon &
Storr’s Brenndarcy Borgen, promising wheaten puppy of correct size for his
age, very pleasing head & expression, nice size of eye & expression,
good reach neck, shoulders & front, balanced body with the correct spring
of rib. Could carry a little more weight. Good hindquarters, nice turn of
stifle, short hocks & correct tailset, in nice coat, moved & showed
steadily; 2 Catto’s Birselaw The Thrill Of It All, bigger built than 1.
Appealing expressive head, stands well forward over his front, in good body,
nicely balanced shape. Coat not in its best condition & needs to improve
in his movement. JD (4) 1 Currie’s Stirlingview
Stunning, r/br, pleasing small dark eye & well placed ears. Could have a
shorter foreface, nice big teeth. Good reach of neck, correct in shoulder
& straight front, fairly decent body, well made hindquarters. Tail a
little high set. Coat of correct texture, moved & showed well; 2 Bradshaw
& Shannon’s Newfield Harvest Moon over Brenndarcy, light r/br. Could have
a shorter foreface. Overall balance good. Would prefer more positive
movement. Showed well; 3 Burgin’s Noncom Hugo First. ND (1) 1 Hunt’s Noncom Mr
Tom, r/br, well grown, quite a pleasing head, good turn of stifle & good
feet. Needs better preparation & ring training. Can move well when
settled, just needs time spent on him. GD (2) 1 Lamb &
Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Fable, silver & alone. Up to size & would prefer
less length of leg for a better balance. Head quite pleasing, neck could be
longer. Well made body with correct spring of rib, nice turn of stifle. Tail
set too high. In good quality coat, moving quite well. LD (11) 1 Robert’s Cannwood
Cut Above, wheaten with plenty of animation, liked his size & balance,
good head for proportions, nice dark eye & keen expression, good neck
& shoulder angulation, straight in front. Would like tighter feet. Nice
body for spring of rib & depth of chest, level topline, well made
hindquarters, excels in turn of stifle, correct tailset, in good coat &
condition, moved & showing well; 2 Thompson’s Castleline Bang On Time,
r/br, nice head & expression, good neck & shoulders, straight front,
pleasing balance, nice outline, correct tailset, won his place on sound
movement, shows well; 3 Catto’s Birselaw Bobby Darin. OD (5) 1 Felter &
Rumen’s Ch Landbuck Tillisch, red, very nice head, liked his balance &
expression, nice size of male, has quality & good balance, correct length
of neck, good shoulders & front, nice body for depth & spring of rib,

in a good quality coat & moving well both ways, showed well. CC &
RBIS; 2 Braybrook’s Ch Cloverbrook Codebreaker, silver grey, just a shade
longer cast than 1, liked his head, well placed ears, nice large teeth, good
neck, well made body with correct ribbing, strong hindquarters. Would have
liked his head furnishing a bit shorter & his body coat tidied a little
to give a better picture. Moves well when he cooperates with his handler.
RCC; 3 Inett & Bambridge’s Ch Carradine’s Crackaway Jack. B (5) 1 Byrne’s Little Miss Tonka, wheaten bitch, nice head,
good stop & ear placement, good neck & straight front, liked her body
shape, nice spring of rib, good hindquarters, liked her turn of stifle &
short hocks, correct tailset, in good coat, moves well & shows with
animation; 2 Ballinger’s Carradine Minnie The Moocha, dark brindle of a
slightly smaller size than 1, pleasing head for shape & balance, well
defined stop & dark eye, liked her body shape & another with good
hindquarters, shows herself off & moves well. Lost out to 1 on coat; 3
Day’s Cherrycrack Ludo at Trekhilli. MPB (3) 1 Goud’s Vale of
Atholl’s Bessie McIntyre, wh/br of good size for age, nice head, good dark
eye & well placed ears with attractive dark points, good neck &
shoulders, front is straight. Would like her to carry more body, Nice turn of
stifle with short hocks, tailset correct, in nice coat, shows well but needs
to strengthen in hind movement; 2 Hewitt’s Littleacorn Aliye, r/br, a little
too refined for her age. Head good, dark eye & excellent stop, correct
earset, nice body & good hindquarters. Would like her a size bigger with
a better depth of bone. PB (4) 1 Bateman &
Inett’s Carradine In Love With Amy, wh/br, liked her head, just a little bold
in eye. Well proportioned head, good stop, correct earset, good body &
nicely balanced, well made hindquarters & correct tailset, in nice coat
& condition, moved well. BP; 2 Pett’s Doonrae Lexicon Of Love, wh/br with
dark points, nice outline & body. Would just prefer a little more bone,
not in the best of coats. Active showgirl & moves well; 3 Keeve’s Seveek
I Dreamed A Dream. JB (11) 1 Patten &
Inett’s Carradine Magic Penny, silver of nice size, very balanced head, nice
dark eye & well placed ears, big teeth, correct shoulder angulation, nice
body for depth & spring of rib, strongly made hindquarters & short
hock, well placed tail, in good coat & condition, moved soundly &
showed well, should do well in the future; 2 Robert’s Cannwood Izzy Wizzy, of
similar size to 1, very expressive head & well placed ears, nice in body

with a dark eye, good stop & well placed ears, good length of neck,
correct shoulder angulation & straight front, well balanced body, correct
spring of rib & correct tailset, strongly made hindquarters, short hocks

such a lovely feminine head, nice dark eye, defined stop with neat well
placed ears, lovely balanced outline, good neck, clean well angulated
shoulders with straight front, good spring of rib, correct length of back

carrying a touch too much weight. Strong well made hindquarters. Moves a
little too fast to assess correctly; 3 Hooton & Hughes’ Gyncairn Royal
Velvet at Penticharm. Breeders 1 Braybrook’s team of three gr/br, all of a type &
size, moved together in unison up & down the ring, all had a balanced
look when moving in profile. DAVID WINSLEY |
