Report on Cairn Terriers. SOUTHERN COUNTIES CANINE ASSOCIATION 2012

Generally I was unhappy with the quality of the males exhibited under me at this show

I looked for a typical well formed head, free movement with a firm topline held on the move. I believe that a level topline is essential -low set tails mean that the pelvis is at the wrong angle and this hampers good hind movement and there is lack of drive. I forgave closer than ideal hind movement in order to place exhibits that had the freedom of movement and overall balance that I was looking for.

As many judges have recently commented I am also worried about the poorly constructed heads in this breed. The top skull is too narrow (sometimes flat) and the stop is poorly defined with a weak foreface.

       Minor Puppy Dog (2,0)

1st ,Bradshaw and Shannon's Newfield Harvest Moon over Brendarcy, 8mth red br. Masculine in outlook. Well grown, sufficient bone, good head with big teeth Moved well both ways and carried a level topline on the move. Best Puppy.

2nd  Bateman and Gompels' Carradine Terries Tipple, 6 mths. Giving away a lot in age, well formed head, good mouth, coat and condition. Needs to strengthen in topline but has plenty of time to do this.

       Puppy Dog (1,0)

1st  Goldfinch's Malmay Calling time at Kanawha, 10 mth. heather br. Pleasing head, very good mouth, eye colour and shape, well placed ears. Moved well if a little close at present both fore and aft. Good overall balance.

      Junior Dog (1,0)

1st ,Golfinch's Kanawha What a Thriller, red br. not a big dog but nicely balanced with a level topline held well. He strode out.  Masculine head. Has quality.

      Post Grad Dog. (9,3)

1st  Peers' Tweedisle Sea Scout, This dog still has some maturing to do Pleasing balanced body, moves with purpose. Looks well in side action. Very good topline and tail set. In Good coat and condition.

2nd  Lamb and Saltmarsh's, Renshaw There and Back Again, A smaller pattern. Strong topline, good coat. Covered the ground well. An excellent showman.

  3rd  Newton's Strathinver Specification.

      Limit Dog (2,1)

1st ,Confue's Anjofra I'm not Going, Stood alone but deserved his placing. Masculine correctly formed head, good mouth and eye in both colour and shape. Standing, presented a strong balanced outline. In great coat and body condition, parallel footfall both fore and aft.

      Open Dog (5,1)

1st ,Felters and Rumens' CH. Landbuck Tillisch, One I have judged before. Well formed and typical head. In good body and coat condition. Excels in free movement with plenty of reach and drive. He had everything that I was looking for.C.C. B.O.B.

2nd  Braybrook's Cloverbrook Codebreaker, Typical in all aspects, good head, nicely balanced body, in very good all round condition. Showed and moved well R.C.C.

3rd .Bateman and Sach, Dandi Boy Spud.

     Veteran (0)

     Good cit M (4,3)

1st Lamb and Saltmarsh's Birselaw Fable SHc M, gr br.up to size. Pleasing head, good body and coat condition. He was not co-operating with his handler.

    Minor Puppy Bitch

1st  Osborn's Tweslam Thistle be Magic, well grown 8mth red br. at the leggy stage, good body balance, strong outline,  feminine in outlook. Pleasing side gait

2nd Bradshaw's Newfield Michaelmas Daisy very similar to 1st but a smaller pattern. Lovely balance great topline. Carries herself well. A close decision both are promising puppies.

  3rd Peers' Tweedisle Paper Moon.

    Puppy Bitch(5.1)

1st ,Tutchings'Crowneast Midsomer Florey,11 mths gr. br. Well grown balanced body in short coat. Level topline held well. Showed well enough to win this class but would not co-operate with handler when competing later.

2nd  Burnett's Kilnyard Good Heavens 9mths wh. handled so well on the table everything in the right place. Moved freely with enthusiasm but completely lost interest standing and refused to show off her many good points. She beat her very showy sister on body construction and movement.

3rd  Burnett's Kilnyard The Best of Luck.

   Junior Bitch(2,1)

1st  Shannon and Storr's Brenndarcy Snedronningen, Very feminine beautiful headed wh. Handled well on the table moved with confidence. In good all round condition.

   Post Grad. Bitch (7,0)

1st  Kinchin's Carradine Ruby Tuesday at Penidazzle, wh.br. With a strong outline held well on the move. Good driving action. Good mouth, eye colour and placement. In ex condition. Could be a trifle shorter in loin but her other qualities out weigh this.

2nd   Peers' Tweedisle Sister Sarah gr. br of ex. balance, good side gait. Well formed feminine head. Level topline in good coat and condition. not as positive in fore and aft action as 1st.

3rd  Bennett's Maximal Dancing on the Moon.

Limit Bitch(11,3)

This class contained some beautiful bitches. I would be happy to award all placed bitches with a C.C. It is such a tragedy that we do not have the same quality in depth in the males being shown nowadays.

1st Cameron's Stryveling Sweet Caroline wh.--and sweet she really is. Very feminine and well formed head, neat ears, good mouth. Lovely flow of neck into shoulders. fluent mover and a good showgirl. A pleasure to award her the C.C.

2nd Hewitt's Littleacorn Stay in Touch. gr.br.  Different in type to 1st but balanced throughout. Feminine head small ears showy and very sound on the move. A quality exhibit

3rd Warne's Cloverbrook Carousel at Spirebrook

  Open Bitch(6,1)

Again quality exhibits Very little separated them.

1st Osborn's Tweslam Maid by Magic, red ,very sound powerfull side action with a perfect parallel footfall. Nicely balanced body with a strong topline. Well made skull with correct eyes in colour and in shape. Lots to like. R.C.C.

2nd Yates and Johnson's Birselaw Only make Believe to Pendley, feminine gr. br. handles so well on the table--everything as it should be .Again a perfect mover both in side gait and fore and aft. Ex.showmanship .I needed two 1st prizes here.

3rd Owen's honeyhall handful at Caldwell.
