First of all I would like to
thank the C.T.A. Committee for asking me to officiate at this show. It has been
almost 10 years since my last appointment; so a big thank-you to my stewards
Lynda Hughes and Sherrie Frost for looking after this out of practice judge so
well. But most of all thank-you to all the exhibitors for entering and giving
me the opportunity to go over your dogs and the sporting way in which you
accepted my decisions.
We all interpret the Breed
Standard in a slightly different way and today was just my interpretation.
However, having said that; I was very surprised at the huge variation in size and
type. In my opinion there were some
Bitches that would have made good Dogs and vice versa. I found some exhibits to
be far too heavily boned and cloddy whilst others were too fine and lacked
substance. I found a lot of exhibits to be Barrel Ribbed, these usually
coincided with the heavy shoulders, also some were too short in rib which left
an over long loin. There were also extremes in the Head department, the
standard calls for ‘Small but in Proportion to the Body’ I found some to be far
too big and heavy whilst others were very narrow in both scull and muzzle, many
also lacked the desired stop. I know you have heard it said many times before
but “a Cairn is not a Cairn without the correct head”!
On the plus side,
temperaments were very good, I only found a few suspect mouths and movement
seems to be improving especially hind movement. Rear angulation was good, I
only found a few with straighter stifles than I would like and none to be too
excessive. I only found a few exhibits that were lacking in fore chest.
I was really pleased with
both my line ups and I think that there are quite a few youngsters in both
sexes that look exciting prospects for the future.
VETERAN DOG OR BITCH (6,2ab)
1st. King and Lieghton’s
CURTISEY FOREIGN ACCOUNT WITH CARRADINE. A lively 8 ½ Dark Brindle of correct
size, she is perfectly balanced and has a lovely head and expression, very good
neck leading into nicely sloping shoulders, level topline, good bend of stifle,
she moved really well and showed her little socks off. Well handled.
2nd. Saich’s
LINCOLY GOLDEN LEGEND. 9 Year old Red Dog that oozed masculinity, he has an
excellent outline, good front assembly and hindquarters which enabled him to
move really well, just preferred the head of 1 but liked him a lot.
3rd. King and
Leighton’s CH. CARRADINE NIGHT LISTENER AT HARKINLEIGH
MINOR PUPPY DOG (3, 1ab.)
1st. Thompson’s
CASTLELINE BARN DANCE. Very promising 7 Month old Cream, very nice head with
good stop and dark eye, well balanced with a lovely outline good front and fore
chest which enabled him to move so well in front, moving a little close behind
today but this may improve as he matures and muscles up. Will watch his
progress with interest.
2nd. Purvis’s
MIGHTY REARRANGER WITH MOSSPUR. 8 Month old Cream, nice size with very good
neck and shoulders, he has a good topline and tailset with good bend of stifle
but needs to settle in movement.
PUPPY DOG (5)
A nice class.
1st. Weinberger’s
CORRENIE HURRICANE FLY. Promising 9
Month old Red Brindle, nice size with very pleasing head, straight
front, good neck and nicely sloping shoulders leading to a level topline, well
angulated hindquarters, he moves well in front and behind with plenty of drive,
a steady showman. Best Puppy Dog.
2nd. Hogarty’s
CADAGIO DON’T STOP ME NOW. Almost 12 months old and up to size, this quality
Red Brindle has a lot to like, he presents an excellent outline with a very
masculine head, has strong hindquarters which enabled him to move with drive,
unfortunately he was moving a little erratically in front today which lost him
the first place.
3rd. Currie’s
STIRLINGVIEW PLAY THE DICE. Another promising puppy.
JUNIOR DOG (5)
1st. Catto’s
NORDCAIRN’S ONCE UPON A TIME AT BIRSELAW (IMP DNK) Very showy Dark Brindle,
very nice head with dark eye and well placed ears, Lovely outline, good
hindquarters, moved with drive behind but needs to settle in front.
2nd. Brennan’s
MILINBACK MASTER CLASS. This Red has a lot to like, he has a very pleasing head
with dark eye, a good front and very good neck and shoulders leading to a level
topline and correct tailset, a sound mover but lacked a little drive behind.
3rd.
Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE WINSFORD.
NOVICE DOG (4)
1st. Inett,
Harrison, King and Leighton’s CARRADINE GEORGE FLIES. Promising 6 Month old
Dark Brindle with very nice head and expression, good front, well balanced with
excellent outline, good bend of stifle, showed very well for one so young,
although his movement needs to settle. Well handled.
2nd. Kinton’s
WOODTHORPE I KNOW THE CODE. 9 month old Silver Brindle with a very pleasing
outline, handled really well on the table, very nice head with dark eye,
unfortunately his movement let him down today but this could well improve with
time.
3rd. Saich’s
LINCOLY I BELIEVE I CAN FLY.
POST GRADUATE DOG (11, 2ab.)
1st. Poile’s
KEDVAIY HOGMANY. Well balanced Red
Brindle of quality, he is a nice size, and has a lovely head and expression,
very good neck and clean well sloping shoulders, good topline and tailset, very
good hindquarters, moves well behind but needs to tighten up his front and also
needs to body up a bit, hopefully these will come as he matures.
2nd. Waugh’s
TRIBANNON WAR DANCE. This Cream has a lot to like, he has a lovely head with
dark eye, and an excellent outline with clean shoulders, he is a nice size, and
has a very good front but would prefer slightly more bend of stifle, a steady
mover.
3rd. Shannon and
Storr’s BRENNDARCY LIMITED EDITION.
LIMIT DOG (9,2ab.)
VERY NICE CLASS
1st. Currie’s
STIRLINGVIEW SUPERHERO. I liked this Cream dog a lot. He handles so well on the
table, has a lovely head and expression with dark eye, good front, very good
neck leading to clean correctly sloping shoulders, well sprung ribs, level topline,
strong hindquarters, he moved and showed really well. In excellent condition
and well-presented and handled. I seriously considered him for the R.C.C. but
on the day he just couldn’t match the Joire de Vivre of ‘I Spy’
2nd.
Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE JUMBUCK. Another Cream that I have long admired,
well presented in full coat of excellent quality, he excels in head with
well-placed ears, deep stop and a dark eye. Another that is lovely to go over
with clean shoulders and deep well sprung ribs, level back and very strong well
angulated hindquarters which enabled him to move with drive. A very close
decision between these two.
3rd Shopland’s
HJOHOO’S A KIND HJO CAN’T FIND ON CHERRYCRACK (IMP SWE) Another one I liked a
lot.
OPEN DOG (8,2ab)
1st. Catto’s CH.
BIRSELAW THE THRILL OF IT ALL. I loved this dog; it was such a pleasure to go
over him; if anyone wants to learn about construction, then this is the dog to
go over, he is so well put together and shows no sign of coarseness.
Beautifully balanced Grey Brindle with the most lovely head and a real Cairn
expression, very good front with excellent neck and very clean shoulders, well
sprung deep ribs of correct length, level topline, bang on tailset and
correctly angulated well-muscled hindquarters; he is so sound and just glided
around the ring, never put a foot wrong; he is in super condition and I was
very happy to award him the C.C. and B.I.S.
2nd. Thomas’s
TYCADNO I SPY. One I have had my eye on for a while, he is like a fine wine
that just gets better with maturity. This well bodied Wheaten Brindle was
presented in superb condition and just oozes quality, he is a good size, and is
very masculine with a super head and expression, very good front, excellent
length of neck leading to well-placed shoulders, correct ribs, very good
topline and tailset, well angulated strong hindquarters which enabled him to
power around the ring (his handler had a job to keep up at times!) he was so
full of himself and I was pleased to award him the R.C.C.
3rd. Inett,
Harrison and Melia’s CAN. CH. EMJADE JIMMY HENDRIX. Another quality exhibit.
SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG/BITCH (6,1ab)
1st. Purvis’s
SVENDALENS MEMOIRE CHERRIE. Pretty Silver Brindle Bitch, she is well balanced
with a lovely head, she has very good neck and shoulders, level topline and
well angulated hindquarters, moved and showed well.
2nd. Melia’s
ROACHDEE TREACLE BONBON. Nice sized Dark brindle with pretty head and dark eye,
very nice outline, she moved and showed well, but was carrying a little too much
weight today.
3rd. Morley’s
KEDVAIY LOCAMOTION.
MINOR PUPPY BITCH (9,1ab)
What a lovely class of Babies
1st. Day’s
TREKHILLI PICKED PEPPA. What can I say; I fell hook, line and sinker for this 7
month old Silver Brindle. She took my eye on entering the ring and did not
disappoint on the table, she oozes quality, very feminine head with good front,
lovely neck flowing into clean well laid back shoulders, excellent topline and
tailset well angulated hindquarters, moves so well for one so young, should
have a bright future, expertly handled and showed all out to win Best Puppy in
Show.
2nd. Thompson’s
CASTLELINE SHOULDN’T DO THAT. A very promising but very raw almost 7 month old
Cream; she is going to need plenty of time, she has a good head with dark eye
but is lacking in furnishings at the moment; construction wise, she has
everything in the right place which showed in her excellent movement and won
her this place.
3rd. Inett and
Harrison’s CARRADINE CONNIES KIRSTY.
PUPPY BITCH (9,2ab)
Another lovely Class.
1st. Thomas’s
TYCADNO MORNING STAR. Really like this quality Wheaten Brindle of 11 months,
she has a Lovely head and expression and is so well balanced with an excellent outline,
very good front and well angulated hindquarters, she moved very well once
settled, just felt that she was carrying a little too much puppy fat today!
2nd. Shannon and
Storr’s BRENNDARCY FORTUNE TELLER. Well
I predict that she will have a bright future! 10 month old Grey Brindle with
most appealing head, liked her type, she is well balanced with a good front,
very good neck and shoulders, good ribs, level topline and well angulated
hindquarters, very showy and a really sound mover as are all from this kennel,
well handled.
3rd. Currie’s
STIRLINGVIEW SPIN THE DICE. Another promising puppy that just lost out on her
head today.
JUNIOR BITCH (8,3ab)
1st. Dolan’s
GLENROOD SCHEHERAZADE. At just 13
months old; this stunning Cream took my eye on entering the ring, she has such
presence for one so young, such a feminine head, very good front, excellent
outline with clean shoulders, firm topline and strong hindquarters, she moves
really well; but is lacking in brisket at the moment, which held her back in
the challenge; hopefully this will come as she body’s up with maturity. One for
the future.
2nd. Waugh’s
TRIBANNON ON TIP TOES. And she was.
Another Cream, 17 months old, she has a lovely head and handled really well on
the table with excellent neck and shoulders, but seemed to lose her topline on
the floor, (maybe coat?) moved a little close today but with plenty of drive.
3rd. Brennan’s
MILINDACK MAID TO MEASURE.
NOVICE BITCH (12,2ab)
1st. Waugh’s
TRIBANNON MINUET. Very promising Cream who has a delightful head with deep stop
and dark eyes, she is so feminine, has a super outline, very good front and
hindquarters, and moved really well once settled.
2nd SVENDALENS
MEMOIRE CHERRIE.
3rd. saich’s
LINDCOLY ICE ICE BABY. I really liked this bitch but she was playing her
handler up today.
POST GRADUATE BITCH (12,1ab)
What a Lovely Class!
1st. Dolan’s
GLENROOD MAGIC SPELL. This feminine Dark Brindle caught my eye straight away; she
has it all, spot on for size and balance and what a showgirl. She was a joy to
go over on the table and didn’t disappoint on the floor. She has a lovely head
with well-placed ears, dark eyes and a really mischievous expression, lovely
front, excellent neck with clean well laid back shoulders, well sprung ribs,
super topline and correctly angulated hindquarters, such a true mover with
plenty of drive, never put a foot wrong and I was very happy to award her the
C.C. B.O.S. and R.B.I.S.
2nd. Hogarty’s CADAGIO
DRESSED TO IMPRESS. Another one out of the Top Drawer! Silver Brindle with the
most gorgeous head with a really naughty cairn expression, beautifully balanced
and a very nice size, she handled so well on the table, has an excellent
outline, super front and very strong well angulated hindquarters, she moved so
well, as you would expect from a bitch that is made right, well presented and
handled. Pleased to award her the R.C.C.
3rd. Smee’s MALMAY
SUNSHINE SALLY. Another lovely bitch.
LIMIT BITCH (6,1ab)
1st petts’s
DOONRAE LEXICON OF LOVE. This well balanced Grey brindle is all Cairn! She is a
nice size and impressed me on the table as she is so well put together. Lovely
head with wicked expression, good front, excellent neck leading to well sloping
shoulders, well sprung deep ribs, good topline and tailset, strong
hindquarters, she is a sound mover and was in tip top condition, well presented
and handled, pressed hard in the Challenge.
2nd. Shannon and
Storr’s BRENNDARCY DIZZEE RASCAL. A
very showy Red with typical head and expression and a nice dark eye, I liked
her for size and balance, she has a good front, very nice outline with well
sprung ribs, well angulated strong hindquarters and is an excellent mover.
3rd.
Braybrook’s CLOVERBROOK COPYWRITE.
OPEN BITCH (13,3ab)
An excellent class of top
quality bitches, I found this very hard to judge and was splitting hairs
between them, could have done with another set of cards, the top five could
well change places on another day!
1st. Dolan’s CH.
CASTLELINE PEGGY SUE. I have always liked this ultra-feminine Cream, she has
the most appealing head, is well balanced and a nice size with just the right
amount of bone, very good front, excellent neck flowing into well placed
shoulders, good topline and tailset, well angulated hindquarters and she moves
like a dream. Unfortunately her coat was not at its best today which let her
down in challenge, nevertheless a very worthy Champion.
2nd.
Hogarty’s IR. CH. CADAGIO TURNING
TABLES. Eye catching dark Brindle of real quality, she has a super head and
expression, best of fronts, excels in neck and shoulders, deep well sprung
ribs, has a level topline and very strong well angulated hindquarters, she
moved parallel in front and rear with plenty of drive, excellent showgirl that
was well presented and handled.
3rd. Bateman’s
CARRADINE IN LOVE WITH AMY.
BREEDERS CLASS
1st. CARRADINE
2nd. CLOVERBROOK
Two very nice groups both
showing consistency in type.
