Joint C.T. Club CH.
Show---held on May 4th 2014 My thanks to the Southern Cairn Terrier
club for inviting me to judge the Joint show following their centenary show.
Thanks also go to my most capable stewards who made my task much easier by
ensuring that everything ran smoothly. A judging appointment should be an
enjoyable experience. This was not, mainly because of the following
observations. 1, HEADS. This surely is the hallmark of
our breed. I know that I have made comments on this point before—things have
not improved—they have got worse. We
now have far too many with weak heads. Too narrow in foreface and upper
skull---lacking in a true stop. A slight indentation is NOT a stop. 2, EYES We now have round eyes creeping in
and what is worse, in my opinion—eyes of a lighter colour than ideal and some
have ringed eyes. This completely spoils the expression. 3, TOPLINES and TAILSETS, A cairn should
move with a level topline—no bouncing and should move smoothly and without
effort. I saw far too many with
toplines sloping over the croup down to the tail with the lack of drive that
follows such construction (I am not advocating a fox terrier tail set) As
usual I saw incorrect fore and aft movement. I was able to view the front
action even though the dog was moving away from me. A cairn should be medium everywhere—no
extra long necks nor over extended stifles or elongated lower thighs. The quality in depth in bitches is now
sadly lacking, the few good males that we have at present outshine the bitches. On the plus side I found very few lacking
in forechest and nearly all had good mouths with good sized clean teeth. At the end of the day I felt sad and
concerned, no wonder foreign visitors observing our breed say we lack quality
in our Cairns. Minor puppy dog (3,1) 1st Catto's Nordcairn's Once
upon a Time at Birselaw, 6mth dk br.
Head correct, should develop well Dk eyes correct in shape, moved with
drive holding a strong topline. Presented in good hard coat and well
conditioned. A good showman. 2nd
Peers'Tweedisle Relight my Fire, 8mths red dk pts, Good well constructed
head, strode out but did not hold his topline as well as 1st. Puppy Dog (2) 1st
Parker-Tucker's Uniquecottage Winsford, 10mth red br. Needs more ring training but I saw enough
sound driving movement in spite of his wayward ways. A well constructed puppy
who needs to mature in head. 2nd Miller 's
Cornton Dark Corrie10mth dk. br. scored in head over 1st but not
as good in body construction nor in movement. Junior dog (4,1) 1st Poile's
Kedvaiy Hogmanay, red br. with a strong balanced outline in short coat, well
conditioned. Correct skull formation with deep stop and dk eyes, good side
gait. Would like smaller ears. 2nd Percy's
Winetta Sir Ivor, wh. br. Good balanced body in tip top condition, moved well
but not as well up on his pasterns as 1st.Close up. 3rd Newton's
Marie's Magic Moonraker with Strathinver. Maiden Dog. (2,1) Parker-Tucker's
Uniquecottage Winsford, 1st in puppy dog—was more settled here showing a good
flow of neck into shoulders and a good driving action. Novice dog. (2) 1st Saich's
Lindcolly Outta the Blue dk br. Not a big dog, head could be stronger, well
presented, level topline Scored in topline on the move over2nd. 2nd Drew's
Tycadno Thriller at L'Artiste, A bigger example, in good coat and well
conditioned, could do with a slightly better stop, did not hold his topline
on the move, lacking drive. SP. Beginners dog (1) 1st Morley's
Kedvaiy Locomotion, dk. br. with a very good head, deep stop, correct eyes,
small ears correctly placed. In fine condition, could do with more drive on
the move but held his topline well. Graduate dog (4) 1st Inett and Engebretsen's Carradine Dexter,
dk br. not a big dog but has quality in abundance. Typical in head (something
to aim for)--deep stop, small ears and correct eyes (peat pools) Presented
well. Lovely flow of neck into shoulders, level topline with correctly formed
hindquarters enabling him to move with drive. 2nd Miller's
Cornton Coulter, red br. A larger example, balanced body, excellent
head—everything as it should be. could be finer in shoulder with a better
neckline. Not as impressive on the move as 1st. 3rd Saich's
Lincoly I believe I can Fly Post Grad dog (4) 1st Shaw's
Honeyhall Headboy, Excellent headed grey br. in good all round condition.
Tends to spoil his outline when going around with other exhibits but looked
much better when moving on his own. A well balanced typical quality dog. 2nd
Shopland's Hjohoo's A Kind Hjo Can't Find at Cherrycrack. Another example
with an excellent head correct stop,
and eye colour. Strong topline held well, free action. I'd just like to stretch him out a little but there is
a lot to like here. 3rd Morley’s
Kedvaiy Locomtion Limit dog (7) 1st Thomas’
Tycadno I Spy, well constructed wh. br. Sound mover with a balanced outline
held well on the move. Strong contender considered for higher honours. 2nd Mears'
Glenmear Magee, by the same sire as 1st.Super headed wh. br. typical
and balanced outline. Not as controlled in movement as 1st. 3rd Waites’
Svendalens Snow Knight Open dog (7) 1st
Catto'sCH. Birselaw the Thrill of it All, aptly named wh br. who had
everything was looking for. Most expressive head with desired stop, correct
eyes, small ears. Lovely flow of neck into shoulders, correctly placed and
carried tail Unexaggerated balanced outline held well on the move. Effortless
driving action. A truly beautiful example of our breed. C.C. And B.O.B. 2nd Percy's
Winetta Stand and Deliver, dk. br. Another lovely example, balanced body,
strong topline, masculine in outlook, which gave him the edge to win the
res.C.C. Typical head with dk. eyes and correctly placed ears Moved out well
and was presented in superb condition. Close up to winner. 3rd Lindborg
& Nordstrand’s Swe Ch Rasken’s Real Camaro SP. Vet dog or bitch
(7yrs-9)(3,3) Sp Vet dog or bitch (10
and above)(2) 1st Dolan's Glenrood Magic Pipit, 15 yrs She
was in great form striding out like a youngster belying her advanced years.
Pretty head, mouth full of gleaming teeth a testament to the care and
attention given to her by her owner. 2nd Dolan's
CH. Glenrood Magic Solitaire11plus yrs another in great form, well coated,
firm topline held well. The great enthusiasm of the older bitch won the day. Minor puppy bitch (7,3) 1st Waites'
Seveek Snow Angel with Svendalens 8mths grey br. pretty feminine puppy who
moved and showed well. 2nd Dolan's
Glenrood Scheherazade, 6mth wh. Very much a baby, strong outline held well
correct coat and movement. 3rd Osborn’s
Tweslam Whispered Spell Puppy bitch (7,3) 1st Shannon
and Storr's Brenndarcy Tommelise, typical red br. 11mths very good head with
desired stop, eyes ears and correctly formed skull. In full coat, level
topline and correct tail set. Moved well in snatches. 2nd Confue's
Anjofra Mad about Me.10mths gr.br with a pretty feminine head everything
correct, pleasing in outline, showed and moved well just growing a new coat.
Close up. 3rd Peers’
Tweedisle Carefree Junior bitch (9,2) A difficult class to
judge. Too many with the faults mentioned in my preamble. I was having to
trade one fault that I particularly dislike over another. 1st Inett,
Clayton and Harrison's Carradine Secret Snowdrop, This one emerged as my
winner because of her femininity. Well coated wh.br. She moved and showed
well being as one with her handler. 2nd Marshall
and Gavaghan's Doonrae Million Dollar
Baby red br with a strong outline carried well on the move not as feminine in
outlook as the winner but will look better when her coat is longer. 3rd Owen’s
Caldwall Call The Shots Maiden bitch (1) 1st Owens’s
Caldwall Carefree, cream with a lovely head, deep stop, correct eyes, in
short but correct coat, needs to tighten in front action but time is on her side,
moved with enthusiasm. Novice bitch (3) 1st Dolan's
Glenrood Magic Spell, dk br. clean outline carried well on the move. Super flow of neck into shoulders, correct
eyes for colour and shape small ears well positioned. Moved easily and looked
particularly good in profile standing. 2nd Petts'
Doonrae Norma Jeane, wh. br of a different type to 1st beautiful
head with good stop, in good all round condition, needs to strengthen in
front action but has a great deal to commend her. Won on her femininity over
3rd. 3rd Mcgrath's
Brenndarcy Cinnamon Girl Undergraduate bitch (2) 1st Shannon
and Storr's Brenndarcy Dizzee Rascal, red dk pts in great order, sound in
movement with a strong topline and correct tailset pleasing balance. A
quality exhibit. 2nd Laker's
Wizoz Miss Backchat pretty headed bitch in good coat. Carrying too much
weight today. Sp beginners bitch (2,1) 1st Laker's
Wizoz Miss Backchat --2nd in previous class. Graduate Bitch (9,3) A
nice class---better quality in depth. 1st Smee's
Malmay Sunshine Sally dk br. Feminine correctly formed head, strong outline,
looked really well moving in side gait.
Well presented 2nd Hewitt's
Littleacorn Aliye, Similar remarks apply —they are by the same sire. The 1st
had smaller ears but the actual head was just as good. Good movement and
showmanship. I was splitting hairs here. 3rd Confue's
Anjofra Mymble. Post Graduate Bitch
(6,1) 1st
Robinson's Cruzo Blueberry, Super headed light br. Very feminine, moved
really well with ground covering action. In good body condition but was in
short coat which held her back in the challenge One to trouble the best when
in fuller coat. 2nd Bennet's
Maximal Dancing on the Moon excellent head construction dk. Eyes, well placed
ears. Good topline and tailset but carrying a little too much weight today.
Placed here on her true cairn type and expression 3rd
Warburton's Elmcairn Rosanna. Limit bitch (9,1) the
best class for consistent quality Most could have won the class—so it took me
longer that usual to assess their qualities, and in the end it came down to
personal preference and how I want to see the breed progress. 1st Osborn’s Thistle be Magic, pleasing head
with dark eyes matching her dark red br. coat. Very strong in outline both
standing and on the move, well defined neck into topline correct tailset
absolutely true in movement with enough drive. Balanced body. In good
condition Showed well to win Res.C.C. 2nd Yates and Johnson's Pendley Hester,
differing in type from above, smaller exhibit but balanced throughout.
Excellent head with all the desired attributes and typical mischievous
expression, flowing neckline, dead level topline .A fluent mover with ground
covering action. Showed all out. 3rd Bateman and
Inett's Carradine In Love with Amy. Open bitch (8,3) 1st Felters
and Rumens' Landbuck Xanthe, ultra sound, and feminine cream dk pts. Typical
in all aspects, fluent and true movement with level topline held well at all
times. An enthusiastic exhibit C.C. She became overexcited
in the challenge with the dog. For best of breed. 2nd Hewitt's
Littleacorn Stay in Touch An honest and truly lovely bitch not overdone
in any way. Sweet head and typical expression, true in movement. In good all round condition. In the
challenge for r.c.c. I felt that she was not moving with as much enthusiasm
as in this class A two day back to back event maybe taking their toll. 3rd Lindborg
and Norstrand's Raskens Rich Miss Melbourne. Judge Ann Waugh |
