Cairn Terriers I
believe this was one of the better entries of the year & it was nice to
hear such generous applause for the class winners. Overall I felt the males were
the better for quality in depth with the OD being especially rewarding for me
as the judge! Points
for concern were too narrow skulls, lack of a definite stop & lack of
strength in jaw. Also, I thought I had a number which are too short in leg
for their body depth & that changes the whole appeal for me. MPD (6,1a) 1
Clark-Clarke’s Svendalens Perseverance with Lentrica & 2 Currie’s
Stirlingview Play The Dance, both brindles & little to split them. The
winner has the better stop definition & that fraction more width in skull
which gave him the edge in masculinity & he is a great showman. Both are
blessed with decent length in neck, are well bodied with decent ribbing, good
tail sets& excellent feet. The second had the edge in upper arm length &
it allows him that tad fraction more forward reach in profile action. Two
promising babies; 3 Thompson’s Castleline Barn Dance. PD (2) A. JD (5) 1 Catto’s Nordcairn’s Once Upon A Time at
Birselaw, I recently awarded him terrier PG2 at Birmingham City & spoke highly
of him. He has much to like, has shape, style, a beautiful head, eyes &
expression. The harshest of jackets, he is a lovely size, so well ribbed
& his tail set is so correct. A bit more spring in his step today &
I’m sure he will mature into a real challenger for top honours in the breed;
2 Miller’s Cornton Dark Corrie, I liked heaps about this chap. His head
handles so well, the eyes are almost jet in shade but full of fire &
expression. He has a decent stop, good muzzle, excellent set of teeth. He has
bags substance but I feel he is a bit light in body condition & needs to
gain some weight over the ribs to complete the picture. His side action is
balanced but he came towards me a trifle narrow; 3 Peer’s Tweedisle Relight
My Fire. PGD (7) 1
Day’s Cherrycrack Ludo at Trekhilli, really top size for me but all male in
attitude & style, especially as he circles the ring with that confident
reach & drive showing real self belief. He is well ribbed & carries a
good body, strongly muscled hindquarters, uses his neck to advantage & he
was in good coat; 2
Curie’s Stirlingview Superhero, cream chap with lots to like but he is such a
handful on the move which is a pity as when he settles he is active, spirited
& is full of vigour. His head is so well balanced, enough stop, good
muzzle & such dark, expressive eyes. On the final go around he played up
something awful & it cost him the red card; 3 Drew’s Tycadno Thriller at
L’Artiste. LD (6) 1
Mears’ Glenmear Magee, this wheaten is tall enough but he is soundly put
together, has just about enough neck, well laid shoulders, good ribbing,
supple loin & a well set tail. Ample angles both ends, in really good
coat & his fluent, even side action won the day; 2 Shopland’s Hjhoo’s A Kind Of Hjo Can’t
Find at Cherrycrack, I liked heaps about this dog, smaller all through than
the winner but he scores in neck, backline, tailset & being so fleet
footed as he moves around the ring with such zest & attitude. On the
stack I find he is a little out of balance as his leg length is a bit short
for his body. That apart, he has lots of style & quality & will have
many admirers; 3 Lamb & Saltasg’s Renshaw There And Back Again under
Macmoon. OD (5) A
joy to judge this class which was headed by three super champions. 1 CC &
BOB, Shaw’s Ch Honeyhall Headboy, I just loved him. He is all male in head,
it is so well balanced, sufficient width in skull, well defined stop. Nice
muzzle width & correct bite with good teeth size. He is well boned, has
strong legs, well developed ribbing, good angles & a well set tail. His
action is powerful as he moves around the ring on the tip toe of expectation.
In lovely coat, he did everything I asked of him & I was more than happy
to send him through to the group ring; 2
RCC, Thomas’ Ch Tycandno I Spy, another right out of the top drawer, but what
a handful he must be to show! Just 2 years old he is like a testosterone
charged teenager out on the prowl. Lovely to go over on the table, stunning
head with possibly the best expression of the day from those beautiful eyes.
He is so well constructed, his head carriage is superb at all times. He was
in good coat, but he would insist on pulling, jumping or leaping at every
available opportunity – but keeps his head up, ears on the alert & ready
for anything. Unsurprised to see he is crowned & I’m sure he will add to
this tally once he learns a little decorum; 3 Catto’s Ch Birselaw The Thrill
Of It All, another worthy titleholder. MPB (6,1) 1 BP, Thomas’ Tycadno Morning Star, this is a cream with a hint of perhaps brindle
showing through, but she is glamorous. Ever such a pretty headpiece, darkest
of medium sized eyes, neat ears, jet nose & a very good neck. She is well
ribbed, strong hindquarters & was in good coat. She is assured &
steady on the move – so well schooled that she almost loose leads. Surely one
to watch; 2
Day’s Trekhilli Pickled Peppa, a charming brindle whose outline I loved on
the stack. She is so balanced with a decent length of leg, spirit level back,
well set & carried tail & she moved around the ring in a balanced,
active manner. I would just like a bit more skull width & hope that
develops as she matures; 3 Drew’s Miketops Marvelous Fiona at L’artiste. PB (4,3) 1 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Batton, this was a
nice type of bitch with a typical Cairn head & expression. In lovely coat
she is a nice size, is well bodied with good ribs & bone. She is just a
little unsettled on the move at present which meant it was easy to award the
BPB to the MP as she was so steady & confident. JB (9,1) 1 Waites’ Seveek Snow Angel
with Svendalens, such a pretty headed cr/br with really good eyes, neat ears
& a winning expression. She has a well defined stop, excellent mouth, so
well ribbed, decent length/height proportions, harsh well presented coat &
she moved out steadily; 2
Robert’s Cannwood Special Moment, another cream who had lots of appeal. She
is undeniably feminine in head & expression, super ribbing, lovely reach
of neck & a level back leading to a well set & carried tail. She just
needs to fill out in forechest to complete the picture; 3 Felters &
Rumen’s Tweedisle Playing With Fire at Landbuck. PGB (7,2) 1
CC, Coate’s Penticharm Starlight, I loved her on sight. She is all Cairn in
style & charm. Her head is quite lovely. What an expression created by
that ratio of skull & muzzle, a defined stop & superb eyes. She is a
lovely size, is balanced in body length/wither height proportions, was in
such good coat & she is light & free striding in action. On the stack
she has an air of sheer class & breed type & I felt she & the BOB
made a superb pair of examples of the breed. Her 1st CC & I hope she is
shown on to her title; 2
Owner’s Caldwall Call The Shots, this light red has a stunning headpiece,
well defined stop & a real Cairn expression. She is good to handle on the
table, was in lovely coat & is sound in action. She just lacks maturity
& needs to come together to become a serious prospect; 3 Inett, Harrison
& Clayton’s Carradine Secret Snowdrop. LB (12,5) 1
Petts’ Doonrae Lexicon Of Love, black pointed wheaten/br who is so pretty
& attentive on the stack. She has attitude to burn, is a good size,
balanced shape, decent neck, firm back & good tail. She moved around the
ring with a free, evenly balanced stride; 2
Hughes & Hooton’s Penticharm Wishing On A Star, another b/m wheaten with
such neat ears, jet eyes of medium size & well apart which added to her
appeal. She scores in neck, level back & well set tail. She ran the
winner close as she too showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition as she
circled the ring; 3 Tutching’s Cloverbrook Touch Of Class at Crowneast. OB (9,4) 1
Dolan’s Glenrood Magic Spell, b/m
grey out of a smaller mould. Very feminine in head & expression, well
carried head on a good neck, well ribbed & carrying a good bodyweight
& she is such a keen showgirl. While she moved out well & quite
soundly, I felt she did not have such good fore assembly as the two bitches I
put over her in the challenge which was reflected in their better forward
reach in profile action; 2
Felter’s& Rumen’s Ch Landbuck Xanthe, this light red has lots of appeal
& charm in head & expression. She shows non stop, was in good coat is
well bodied & was beautifully presented. I felt she did not come towards
me as truly as I would have expected from her construction & this cost
her the red card. But am unsurprised to see she is already ennobled – she is
that good; 3 Ward’s Vanajam Its Cold Outside. Breeders (1) 1
Braybook’s collection of 5, all similar make & shape & they make a
quality group. ALBERT WIGHT |
