Critique

The Southern Cairn Terrier Club held its 76th ch show at Bracknell Sports & Leisure Centre, a venue tailor made for me as it is only 10 minutes from home. BIS was Ch Tycadno I Spy, RBIS & BOS Glenrood Magic Spell, BP Carradine George Flies with Harkinleigh.

The venue is light & airy with lots of space, easy to find with good access from both the M3 & M4. I was welcomed by Mrs Somerfield, Mrs Towers, Miss Carlton Smith & Mrs Kinton, all offering me coffee! There was a nice friendly atmosphere & I always feel at home with the Cairn people. My two stewards, Miss Confue & Mrs Fairweather, were certainly on the ball & kept things running most efficiently.

The dog classes were a bit disappointing, especially at the beginning but improved by the time we got to Limit & Open. Some were shown dirty with a strong odour & long nails. I know Cairns are workmen & should have a natural appearance but I think it is almost insulting to the judge to bring dogs that smell & feel dirty, it is after all a beauty show. We got through plenty of wet wipes, that’s for sure.

Size is a problem in this breed & it worried me that I had some rather over size. The bitches were more uniform in size & better in quality overall. Many carried too much weight, more so the bitches.

I enjoyed my day very much & was more than satisfied with my main winners. I judged the breed in Sweden & Russia in January & many Cairns in both countries were better than ours, a sad fact considering what an old native breed this is.

MPD (7,2a)

1 BPD, Inett, Harrison, King & Leighton’s Carradine George Flies with Harkinleigh, what a mouthful. Well up to size for 9 months, sure footed, confident showman, quality head, expressive eyes, well set & carried ears, firm body & topline, well coated. Handled to best advantage. Moving a tad close behind but overall made a good impression;

2 Weinberger’s Correnie No No Romeo, only 6½ months but a promising puppy with keen expression, dark bright eyes, harsh jacket, in excellent condition. Topline not quite there yet, a bit of schooling for the ring would not come amiss;

3 Hacker’s Teddeana Mr Jinks.

PD (5) 1 Clarke’s Svendalens Perseverance with Lentrica, 11 months, easy winner I thought. Good size & type, well bodied, attractive head, focused showman, well fitting coat but excess hair on the outside of his front legs makes him look out at elbow;

2 Confue & Pavlova’s Anjofra Roulette Russe, 10 months, good head & expression, moved OK behind but rather loose in front. Firm topline. Coat not at its best today;

 3 Thompson’s Castleline Barndance.

JD (6,2) 1 Catto’s Nordcairn’s Once Upon A Time at Birselaw, 16 months, dark brindle, in good coat, carrying plenty of body, typical head, lovely eyes, steady showman but could move with a bit more animation. Excellent ribcage, good feet;

2 Keeves’ Seveek Double Dice, 17 months, showy & bouncy, good forehand, bone & feet, moved OK. Not quite the topline of 1 but made quite a good account of himself;

3 Kinchin’s Pennidazzle All Spruced Up.

MD (2)

1 Hughes & Hooton’s Gyncairn Magical Mystery, 19 months, lovely head, keen bright expression. Took a bit of time to settle but a sound mover once he got into his stride. Excellent coat & condition. Short attention span;

2 Kinton’s Woodthorpe I Know The Code, 12 months, masculine youngster, ears on the big side. Good coat texture. Not moving as well as 1.

BD (2)

1 P All Spruced Up; 2 Morley’s Kedvaiy Locamotion, nearly 7 years, large white teeth, dark expressive eyes, in good form with well fitting coat of good texture. Could move with a bit more drive & purpose. Well handled.

GD (1)

1 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Winsford, 19 months, attractive head, keen expression, harsh jacket, fit strong body. Bit excitable & did not really settle down to move at an orderly trot.

PGD (7,2) Very mixed class as PG often is.

1 Saich’s Lindcoly Outta The Blue,

2 years dark brindle, nice for size & proportions, pleasing head, weather resistant coat, well muscled, moved OK but showmanship a bit half hearted today;

2 Bateman & Sach’s Dandi Boy Spud, 6½ years, happy cooperative showman, carrying a bit of extra weight which made him look a bit heavy. Typical head, expressive eyes, splendid coat, moved & showed OK;

3 Drew’s Tycadno Thriller at L’Artiste.

LD (7,4) 1 Ilnett & Engebretsen’s Carradine Dexter, 2 years, comfortable winner here & I considered him seriously for the RCC. Showed himself off perfectly, good head, strong body, good ribcage, lovely feet, well fitting coat, excellent tailset & carriage, moved with animation, very well handled & presented. Sure to make the grade;

2 Waite’s Svendalens Snow Knight, 2½ years, up to size, masculine head. Carrying too much weight today. Well muscled, clean coat of good texture, happy showman but lost his tail a bit when going round;

3 Saich’s Lindcoly Dark Knight.

OD (6) 1 CC & BIS, Thomas’ Ch Tycadno I Spy, 2½ years, fresh & eager, lovely head, eyes & expression. Bit full of himself at times but calmed down eventually. Shapely body, well sprung ribs, strong hindquarters, excellent front, sound mover when he concentrated. Harsh coat. Proper Cairn but so was 2, his nearest rival today & it was quite a close decision;

2 Catto’s Ch Birselaw The Thrill Of It All, 2 years, I see he too is by Ch Larchlea Licence To Thrill at Stanedykes so two half brothers here. Very good topline & coat texture. No mistaking him for anything but a male. Cairn in head & outlook, low set hocks, moved & showed steadily. Just couldn’t match front movement of 1;

3 Bateman & Gompel’s Carradine Terries Tipple.

V 7-9yrs(4,1)

1 Grainger’s Ch Devil In Disguise, 9½ years, extremely happy & with it for his age. Lovely big teeth, still a full set, strong body, hind action could be a little firmer;

2 Saich’s Lindcoly Golden Legend, 9½ years, up to size, coat not at its best, showed OK:

3 Saich’s Lindcoly Here’s Olive.

V 10yrs + over (1)

1 Dolan’s Glenrood Magic Pipit, she is incredibly 16 years old. Amazing old girl, feminine head, good coat & condition, still has her teeth too. Happy switched on showgirl & she did not miss a trick. Great credit to her breeder/owner. BV.

MPB (6,1)

1 Harrison & Inett’s Carradine Connies Kirsty, 9 months, not the most enthusiastic when moving today. Good outline & length of body, excellent coat, firm & fit, low set hocks, very serious expression;

2 Keeves’ Midnight Dreams Among Seveek, 6 months, very appealing head, lovely eyes, full of mischief, good coat, firm body, moved well behind but front movement must improve, Already a good topline;

3 Weinberger’s Correine Summer Wine.

PB (9,3)

1 BPB, Day’s Trekhilli Pickled Peppa, 9 months gr/br, on the ball & totally focused. Quality head, excellent coat & condition, moved & showed very well, well handled. Topline just a little off at times. Keen & interested to the end;

2 Thomas’ Tycadno Miss Moneypenny, celebrating her birthday today, by BIS winner I see. Very nice bitch with good potential, attractive head, good coat. Not so keen on the table but showed steadily once on the floor. Excellent feet;

3 Drew’s Miketos Marvellous Fiona at L’Artiste.

JB (11,3) Excellent class.

1 RCC, Waites’ Seveek Snow Angel with Svendalens, she could have been called "show angel” as she was a real poppet who showed herself off perfectly throughout the class. Very good head & expression, clean neck & shoulders, sturdy body, excellent coat & topline, well proportioned, eye catching youngster who responded well to her handler & fully deserved the RCC. Delightful personality;

2 Thomas’ Tycadno Morning Star, 13 months, by RCC dog. Lovely head & eye, lively showgirl, well fitting coat, excellent ribcage, good topline & quarters. Carrying a bit too much weight today;

3 Waugh’s Andrum Brite Side.

MB (3,1)

1 Goldfinch’s Gorgeous Gloria from Kanawha, just over 12 months. Good outline & proportions, pleasing head. Bit of a fidget standing but looked quite OK going round. Hind movement needs to improve;

2 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Bratton, 13 months, coat not at its best. Good body & quarters, moved reasonably well but not really settled. Pleasing head. When she remembered to concentrate responded well to her handler.

NB (2)

1 T Pickled Peppa; 2 Marshall & Gavaghan’s Doonrae Million Dollar Baby,

2 years, carrying too much weight which made her look a bit solid. Excellent coat texture, typical head, expressive eyes, steady showgirl with good topline & quarters, well handled.

UGB (4,1)

1 Waugh’s Tribannon Minuet, 14 months, high spirited youngster, full of energy. Excellent head proportions, keen expression, neat ears, good neckline, firm body, well coated, sound mover;

2 Morley’s Cannwood Here’s Hetty, by same sire as DCC & RCC winners. 22 months, good head & outline, nicely proportioned, moved quite well but just lacked that bit of terrier enthusiasm at the end. Very good type;

3 McGrath’s Brenndarcy Cinnamon Girl.

BB (3)

1 C Here’s Hetty;

2 Waites’ Specially Designed By Svendalens, 10 months, good head & expression, dark eyes, happy showgirl, moved OK, well muscled, fit body;

3 Laker’s Wizoz Miss Backchat.

GB (6,1)

1 S Snow Angel with Svendalens;

2 Felters & Rumens’ Tweedisle Playing With Fire at Landbuck, typy bitch of 18 months, in good form, quality head with lovely expression, real character who responded well to her handler. Good bone & body, excellent jacket;

3 Confue’s Anjofra Mad About Me.

PGB (6)

1 Confue’s Anjofra Mymble, 2 years dark brindle, excellent showgirl with attitude. Feminine head, well proportioned, strong quarters, harsh jacket, low set hocks, never took her eyes off her handler;

2 Hughes & Hooton’s Penticharm Wishing On A Star, 3½ years, good coated gr/br, enjoying herself. Keen expression, dark eyes, easy mover;

3 Waugh’s Tribannon On Tiptoes.

LB (7)

1 CC & RBIS, Dolan’s Glenrood Magic Spell, 23 months, lovely bitch, great little performer, feminine head & outlook, assertive & confident, very good silhouette which she kept on the move. In splendid condition, clean & well turned out, never put a foot wrong, moved well. Won a strong class;

2 Coates’ Penticharm Starlight, litter sister to 2nd in PGB. Pushed 1 all the way. Super coat, keen alert showgirl, lovely eyes & expression, strong body, went well;

3 Petts’ Doonrae Lexicon Of Love.

OB(9,2)

1 Felters & Rumens’ Ch Landbuck Xanthe, after some deliberation I decided she had to win the class as she is a gorgeous Cairn – the same could not be said about her "asbo” behaviour today. I was hoping she would calm down after a few circuits round the ring. Super friendly & sweet on the table but she did not like the other competitors once on the floor. In the challenge I just could not forgive her antics any longer & the green cards went elsewhere. Beautiful head, everything fits perfectly for size, balance & proportions. Good coat & body. Just got the devil in her today;

2 Dolan’s Ch Castleline Peggy Sue, 4 years, a real lady by comparison, attractive head, dark eyes, neat ears, shapely body, excellent coat, steady showgirl, well handled & presented;

3 Bateman & Inett’s Carradine In Love With Amy.
