Critique for the NICTC Championship Show

Judging for the North of Ireland Cairn Terrier Club, 36th Single breed championship show, held at six mile leisure centre, Ballynure road, Ballyclare, Northern Ireland on 24th September 2017.

I would like to thank the committee for their well organised show and their really warm and friendly welcome to myself and the exhibitors and the visitors that attended the show.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all who generously made entries and sponsored classes – for a small breed club, it keeps the club alive. A special thanks to the exhibitors who came from across the water and land to attend the show.

I was very pleased with the quality and soundness of the entry, we still need to watch out for balance of size – we have a breed that is a medium sized terrier – we need to watch out for the length of body to leg. All had correct scissor bite with clean teeth of good size of jaw to head. We must still keep a watch on movement – some stand well but go close on hind movement on the move. Sadly there were no puppies at the show.

MINOR PUPPY DOG 1 (1abs)

PUPPY DOG 0

MAIDEN DOG 0 NOVICE DOG 0 GRADUATE DOG 1 (1ABS)

JUNIOR DOG 2
1st Hogarty
’s Cadagio Take That (IKC) (D) – grey brindle 14 months, a nice masculine head, dark eye, medium sized ears, good reach of neck into lay of shoulder – length of back correct to leg length – well muscled quarters, moved OK.
2nd Alexander
’s Coharra Captain Cargo (D) – 14 months, a rich cream – very expressive head, dark eye, good stop, scissor bite – enough neck into shoulder – a much squarer type to 1 – muscled quarters – needs to settle on move.

POST GRAD 5 (3 Abs)
1st Smith
’s Rocasovale Danish Delight (D) – Dark red brindle with good length of jacket – liked the head on this boy – very neat ears – good stop – dark eye of correct shape –nice reach of neck into correct lay of shoulder – straight front – balanced body –muscled quarters – used his tail well, only criticism would like more drive from behind to complete picture.
2nd Lamb/Saltmarsh
’s Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon ShCM (D) grey brindle, has a well constructed head – dark eye –correct bite, uses his ears well – good reach of neck into correct lay of shoulder – body of correct length to leg- muscled quarters –I would prefer more substance to him – coming into coat – moved well.

LIMIT DOG 4 (1 Abs)
1st Shannon/Storr
’s Brenndarcy Tinsoldat (D) – A really striking red dog, a sound medium sized cairn, masculine head, strong jaw – comfortable reach of neck into good lay of shoulder – straight legs – well balanced body – muscled quarters – well padded feet – used his tail to advantage –moved well, good length of jacket – only slight criticism perhaps a shade darker eye –seriously considered for top honours.

Good bone on straight legs – good reach of neck – muscled quarters – areas of coat needing slight twitching to complete the picture- I really liked him – moved well.
3rd Smith
’s Rocasovale Distant Drums (D) – red brindle – another good dog from this kennel, litter brother to PG winner, similar comments – a lot to really like about him, especially his sound movement.
