Cairn Terriers – Judge Louise Peers

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge, and to my able stewards, John and Maureen. I did find that being 3rd in the ring with a large entry, that I felt rushed, especially in the later classes, which was the only thing to spoil my day. Thanks also to all the exhibitors for such a wonderful entry, and to my professional photographer.

When we started showing cairns, I was lucky enough, along with my parents, to be mentored by Miss Charlie Dixon of the Rossarden Kennels, and although for me the mentoring began almost 35 years ago, I can still remember her teaching me how a Cairn needs a strong bottom jaw, with large teeth and the mouth needs to have the correct scissor bite. I recall her showing me what I should be looking for and also showed me overshot, level and undershot mouths. Over the years of judging, I have come across the odd incorrect bite, however, I was dismayed today to find that it’s a fault that appears to be becoming quite a problem in the breed.

Best Puppy: Harrisons’ CARRADINE WHISKEY OSCAR

Best Veteran: Smith’s GLENMEAR SPROXTON LASS of GETHLEE

Minor Puppy Dog (4, 2 abs)

1st – Harrisons’ CARRADINE WHISKEY OSCAR - Red, well coated boy for 8 months, with pleasing head  correct eye shape and colour, good stop,  strong bottom jaw with correct dentition.  Length of neck in proportion and well set, shoulders and angulations ok, correct ribcage and nice length of loin. Nicely muscled rear, and excellent tail set, covered the ground with ease and space at the rear. Pleased to award him Best Puppy.

2nd – Shannon & Storr’s  BRENNDARCY BALDRICK - Immature baby 6 month wheaten brindle. Head needs to mature, good stop, but would like a stronger muzzle. Nice shape and colour to the  eye, with an alert expression. Good length of neck and placement correct to shoulder, angulations good. A lot to like, but wouldn’t co-operate on the move, so movement difficult to assess.

Puppy Dog (3, 0 abs)

1st – Firth’s CAIRNGOLD CHICO - Lovely red, with a gorgeous well-proportioned head, correct stop, eyes correct shape and set to give the cheeky expression nice teeth. Ears alert and well carried. Angulations balanced, good front and the rear had space on the move. Held a level topline, and carried his tail correctly, moved with purpose.  Overall a nice size and shape, with good harsh double coat.

2nd – Miller’s  CORNTON FYNE FETTLE - Larger than one, with a strong masculine head, good stop, eye colour & shape correct. Good length of neck sits onto shoulders correctly, angulation of shoulder not as good as rear, fore chest not as developed and spoilt the outline, correct ribcage, length of loin good, tail set could be better. Moved ok for his owner.

3rd  Mr & Mrs Saich’s LINDCOLY ABOVE THE REST

Junior Dog (5, 0 abs)

1st – Percy’s WINETTA QUEST FOR FAME - Grey brindle, Broad skull, muzzle in proportion, good ear placement, carried well on move. Eye colour and shape correct, good stop and strong jaw with excellent teeth. Nice length of neck, pleasing front, with correct angulations ribcage nicely shaped, and length of loin in proportion. Rear angulation balanced to front, tail set good, well-muscled rear quarters allowed him to move with drive..  Nice harsh coat to finish him off. RDCC

2nd – Keeves’ SEVEEK TREASURE THE DREAM - Red harsh coat. Nice head and expression, neat ears. Nicely balanced with good angulations, good fore chest, well-muscled rear quarters but movement not easy to assess.

3rd Lamb & Saltmarsh’s BIRSELAW COME DANCING WITH MACMOON

Post Graduate Dog (2 ,0 abs)

1st Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE SILVER ASKIN - Grey Brindle, has good head with dark eye, and correct dark points to furnishings. Angulations ok, nice length of back, correct rib cage. Moved ok, but doesn’t always hold himself well.

2nd Reeves’ CAIRNGOLD BUBBLY - Smaller build but with correct head shape, gentle stop, nice eye. Good length of neck, length of back in proportion. Tail carried well on the move. Preferred movement of 1st.

Limit Dog (7, 1 abs)

1st K Saich’s LINDCOLY HOLWING MAD MURDOC - Wheaten dog, well-furnished head with well-defined stop, nice dark eye, excellent mouth. Correct angulations to front and rear, length of back in proportion to height, and being balanced showed in his movement, which was true both front and rear; stands well forward giving lovely profile, although correct size to standard I feel he misses out as others are a touch larger.

2nd Keeves’ SEVEEK I SPIED THAT DREAM - Brindle in harsh coat, good head, well bodied; and length to height in proportion. Good bone, movement in the front erratic, moved ok at rear.

3rd Ball’s LENTRICA LET’S DANCE at CALAMONDIN

Open Dog (5, 1 abs)

1st Shannon & Storr’s BRENNDARCY TINSOLDAT - Red boy with masculine head and cheeky expression, with correct mouth. Good length of neck, balanced angulations and good fore chest. Moved well holding a level topline. Well bodied and with a good tail set which was carried well. Overall the correct size for a cairn. I have watched him with interest previously, but have never seen him sparkle as he did today. Pleased to award DCC, also challenged hard for BOB, but was flagging at the end.

2nd Kinton’s CH WOODTHORPE I KNOW THE CODE - Grey Brindle with solid masculine head, good stop and correct mouth. Another balanced dog, with good shoulder placement. Sound steady mover, but lacked the sparkle of 1 today.

3rd Mears’s GLENMEAR MCINTYRE

Veteran Dog (3, 2 abs)

1st Lamb & Saltmarsh’s BIRSELAW FABLE OF MACMOON ShCM - 9 years of age, but still enjoyed the ring. Played his handler up a little, but a few kind words got his tail wagging. Moved at a good pace.

Minor Puppy Bitch (6, 1 abs)

1st Clarke’s LENTRICA DOLLY MIXTURE - Wheaten Brindle, 8 months. Pretty feminine head with nice eye. Good length of neck, nice lay of shoulders, nicely bodied obviously enjoys showing. Moved well.

2nd Harrison’s CARRADINE WINNIE - 8 ½ month red, slightly smaller in stature. Pretty head, good eye and stop head furnishings still developing.  Nicely angulated, good ribcage and length of loin. Rear has good muscle tone, moved with ease.

3rd K Saich’s LINDCOLY ENID BLYTON

Puppy Bitch (4, 1abs)

1st Lund’s CAIRNGOLD BRANDY SNAP – 11 month old light red in full length coat. Feminine head, nice eye and defined stop. Angulations ok, and all in proportion, moved steadily and held a level topline.

2nd Mr & Mrs Saich’s LINDCOLY SAUCEY TROUBLE – 8 month red with a good double coat. Needs time, and appeared a little over awed. Nice length of neck, angulations ok, movement erratic, appeared a little overawed.

3rd A Saich’s LINDCOLY Oh CAROLINA

Junior Bitch (8, 0abs)

1st Thomas’s TYCADNO DANCING STAR – Gorgeous wheaten with feminine well-furnished head, nice width of skull, with good ear placement and dark points. Nice lay of shoulder, good length of neck, and back. Rear angulations ok, moved with drive.

2nd Roberts’ CANNWOOD CHANCE THE MOMENT – Another gorgeous wheaten, pretty head, not quite as wide as 1st.  Nicely balanced with good angulations, moved steadily, and showed well.

3rd K Saich’s LINDCOLY MOANA TILLY

Post Graduate Bitch (10, 0 abs)

1st Soper’s ELITECHARM FIVE OF DIAMONDS – so feminine, good sized skull, muzzle all in proportion, well set ears, good teeth and mouth. Neck flows into a good lay of shoulder, nicely angulated and straight front. Length of back and loin good, well-muscled hind quarters, tail set finishes the picture. Moved with drive and covers the ground well. Stood out in challenge, but needs more maturity.

2nd Felters & Rumens’ LENTRICA FAME AT LANDBUCK – another one to watch. Grey brindle with well-furnished head, nice eye, and good stop. Nice lay of shoulder and angulations ok. Moved and showed well, just preferred front movement on 1st.

3rd Pett’s BRENNDARCY HUNKY DORY AMONG DOONRAE

Limit Bitch (5, 0 abs)

1st Kinton’s WOODTHORPE ENIGMA –Grey Brindle, with good shaped head, nice stop and strong lower jaw. Good angulations, would prefer a little shorter in the loin. Tail set on correctly. Moved and showed well.

2nd Percy’s WINETTA I’VE GOT A FEELING – pretty grey brindle, good head and length of neck. Well presented, straight front, with correct spring of rib.  Moved well.
