Cairn Terrier Association
Championship Show, 17th November 2018, Judge – Dawn Inett (Carradine) Thank you to the Officers
and Committee for inviting me to judge. A special thanks to Phillip Horspool
for his supportive stewarding and Gail Day for assisting. The show, from my view, had a great
atmosphere and a "buzz" all day. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and
thanks to the exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me. I was thrilled
with my entry and, at the risk of sounding overly passionate about my hobby,
it's very heart-warming to see the breed is in a good place at the moment;
right from the MP classes through to the O classes there was quality to be
found. We do need to watch heads to ensure we do not allow narrow heads to
become the norm, the head should be of substance and strength but not large.
Fronts, again we must not allow flat fronts to creep in, we need layback of
shoulder enabling forward reach. Length of back, we need length from ribs not
loin. Hindquarters were mostly satisfactory with only a few tucked under.
Coats were in varying states of growth and presentation. Cairns should be
tidied to show their outline. I don't mind a wild hairdo on top of a great
body but exhibitors must remember that this is a show and they should be
showing off their dogs virtues to advantage. In bitches, Novice, Limit
and Open were very strong classes.
The standard in these three classes was amongst some of the best that
I have judged. As a Judge it is frustrating when there are more than 5
outstanding dogs and you can't place them all. Both Limit and Open had to see
top quality bitches unplaced simply because there were not enough placings
available. The quality was such that
it would have been lovely to have several CC's let alone 1st places! It is always interesting
to get home and "study form" in the catalogue. There were several
breeding similarities in several Cairns that I really admired. Many thanks to all the
exhibitors for accepting my decisions with good grace. Veteran D/B (4 entered, 2
absent) 1st Dolan's Ch Glenrood
Masqerade, Best Veteran. 9 yrs old shown in great coat and condition. Lovely
feminine head with correct bite, correct topline which she held on the move,
lovely tailset, moved out well. 2nd Purvis' Svendalens
Memoire Cherrie, shown in lovely coat and condition, pretty expression from
correct eye, happy and at one with her handler. Minor Puppy Dog (2,1) 1st Saich's Stoutheart
Einstein For Lindcoly, upstanding male, shown in lovely coat and condition,
correct eye, would prefer more width to skull, front assembly all good with
correct feet and bone, moved OK for age and showed well. Puppy Dog (3,1) Two lovely
top quality young males. Am sure they will both have bright futures. 1st Waugh's Tribannon
Karamak, BPIS. Excellent head with correct eye and colour, correct ear
placement, lovely head to body balance. Scored over 2nd in shoulder placement
which, when he settled and performed, produced good reach in front. Shown in
full coat. Well up to size and don't want him any bigger, one hopes he has
done all his growing and will now just mature. Lovely substantial short
tail. 2nd Parker-Tucker's Tom
Trick's Incredibly Ilay of Uniquecottage (Swe Imp) Similar remarks apply to
this dog as for 1st BUT would like him a tad shorter in muzzle. Out of coat today but this is temporary
and what was there, was of correct texture. Junior Dog (4,2) 1st Miller's Cornton Fyne
Fettle, considered for RCC. Aptly named! Lovely head structure, could have
used his ears more to advantage, When he moved out at the correct speed, he covered
the ground well. Shown in full coat of correct texture, in good condition
throughout, lovely tailset and backend construction producing, once he got
going, drive. A dog in fine fettle! 2nd Shannon & Storr's
Brenndarcy Baldrick. A very smart male, shown in good coat and condition,
correct head with lovely eye shape and colour. Preferred front assembly of
1st. This dog wasn't behaving today but is a quality male with much to like. Novice Dog (1,0) 1st Shannon & Storr's
Cale Hill's Go Above and Beyond for Brenndarcy (DNK Imp). Shown in good
condition, coat a little short at the moment but what was there was of the
best quality, correct front assembly, moving a little close behind today.
Would like to see him with time on his back, very "raw" at the
moment but one to watch with maturity. Post Grad Dog (4,0) 1st Parker-Tucker's
Uniquecottage Grey Balm. Lovely male, all around sound dog, When settled he
moved well, shown in good coat and condition. 2nd Keeves' Seveek
Treasure The Dream. Lovely head and eye but somewhat out of condition today
and needing some ringracft training to enable him to show off his virtues. 3rd Saich's Glendream Hear
Mr Roar for Lindcoly. A typy male with attractive head and eye. Correct front
assembly, in good coat and condition. Would prefer a straighter tail carriage
to improve his outline. Of good type. Limit Dog (6,4) Lovely
class of quality males 1st Saich's Lindcoly
Holwing Mad Murdoc, RCC. Outstanding male, bang on for size. Everything where
it should be, a little weak in pastern but of correct type throughout and a
good honest Cairn. He is not, as he appears, heavy in neck/shoulder, once you
battle through his plentiful coat, he is correct! His coat is of correct type
but would benefit from being tidied to enhance his many virtues. A lovely
dog! Same sire at the RBCC. 2nd Shopland's Trekhilli
Mister Bean at Cherrycrack. Lovely headed male, no mistaking his masculinity,
not holding his topline on the move today which pushed him into 2nd. Shown in
great coat and condition. Lovely tail carriage and set on. 3rd Carter's Lentricia
Rocketman At Carernwil. Forms a picture standing, very well presented male
with great tail and set on but would prefer more width to skull and more
positive front action. A quality male but pushed back to 3rd today behind two
quality males. Open Dog (7,6) Another
really lovely class with some top-class males to choose from. 1st Kinton's Ch Woodthorpe
I Know The Code, DCC & BOS. Outstanding male of correct proportions.
Lovely head with width and substance, correct bite and ear placement, lovely
eye shape and correct colour. Shown in great coat and condition. A really
lovely male who is made correctly, he is quality and fits the standard
throughout. A pleasure to judge him and award him CC. He got a little
"bouncy" in the challenge for RBIS and lost out to the BRCC but he
is quality! Awarded his sire a CC back in 2012. 2nd Hogarty's Cadagio Take
That, considered for RCC. Presents a lovely outline when standing and on the
move. Shown in great coat and condition, moved out well with lovely head and
eye, correct type throughout, just couldn't match 1st for "finish"
today. 3rd Owen's Caldwall Call
To Order. Lovely quality male with super head, sound throughout. Just not the
presence of 1st and 2nd and had to settle for 3rd 4th Peers' Tweedisle
Lively Lad and 5th Keeves' Seveek I Spied That Dream. Two good quality males. Special Beginners D/B
(3,0) 1st Metcalf-Sault's
Cannwood Call Me Aggie, Best Special Beginner. Pretty headed wheaten, lovely
coat and shown in great condition. Very attentive to her handler. 2nd Williams' Corynthean
Who Dares Dreams. Pretty headed youngster shown in good coat carrying a
little too much weight. 3rd Purvis' Mighty
Rearranger with Mosspur. Correct coat texture but not overly interested in
showing today Minor Puppy B (5,0) A
lovely class 1st Robinson's Cruzo
Curtain Call, Best Minor Puppy. Absolutely stunning head on this youngster,
correct stop and eyes of lovely colour and set, creating such a typical
expression, lovely neat little ears. A well put together puppy showing great
promise. She is well up to size so please don't grow anymore....!! Loved her
throughout, she has a great tail, correct length and substance. When she came
into the ring, I wasn't overly pleased by her size but once I went over her,
she really impressed and fits the standard. Should have a very bright future.
Has the same sire as BPIS and you could see the likeness! 2nd Hogarty's Cadagio
Let's Get The Party Started. Caught my eye when she came into the ring. Super
showy puppy with great presence and confidence. Lovely outline but just
couldn't match 1st for head properties. A totally different type to 1st but
nonetheless of great quality, could do with losing a bit of puppy fat. A really good quality pup. 3rd Saich's Lindcoly Any
Dream Will Do (NAF). A pretty feminine puppy shown in great coat and
condition. Puppy B (6,5) First 3 are
all lovely puppies carrying different virtues 1st Robinson's Cruzo Cat
Ballou. Well up to size everything where I would want it for a pup of this
age. Pretty well made head with lovely eye, well put together throughout,
shown in great body and condition. Couldn't match her little sister in rear
action and lost out for BPB 2nd Thomas' Tycadno Yours
Truly. A beautifully headed puppy, carrying too much weight today to take top
honours. A puppy out of the top drawer and one I liked very much. 3rd Dolan's Whispers at
Dawn at Glenrood. A lovely appealing puppy but not quite yet as balanced as
1st an 2nd, would like a little more length to balance her out. Junior B (6,1) 1st Catto's Birselaw
Viking Princess, Best Junior, considered for RCC. Really impressed by this youngster.
Loved her size and shape. She has a sweet feminine head with correct head
proportions, flowing into well made shoulders and level topline. Great tail
and set. She moved out well but still has a lot of "puppiness"
about her. Her day will come. Very excited to watch her develop. 2nd Carter's Lentricia
Dolly Mixture at Carernwil. A lovely quality bitch, not the feminine head and
expression of 1st but is very well made throughout and of good type. An all
around sound Cairn. 3rd Peer's Tweedisle Remember
Dee. Good type of Cairn but a little short of coat and carrying a bit too
much weight today, unlucky to meet 1st and 2nd. With time she should mature
to be lovely. Novice B (8,3) At first look I couldn't quite believe
that this was a Novice class, the quality in this class was outstanding. It was testing to split this class down
into placings and would have liked more 1st's! 1st Smedley's Seveek April
Apricot, Best Novice. A really typey youngster with beautiful head and
expression. Very showy and moved out well. Correct size and presented a
beautiful picture when standing. 2nd Thomas' Tycadno Yours
Truly, 2nd in Puppy. 3rd Braybrook's
Cloverbrook Maid for Gold. A quality youngster just out of puppy, very smart
outline of correct proportions, short on coat but a lovely bitch throughout. Post Grad B (9,2) 1st Roberts' Cannwood
Chance The Moment. Very showy bitch with lovely shape and balance. Correct
head, great length of neck flowing into well placed shoulders and holding her
topline on the move, correct tail set. Very good quality bitch. 2nd Keeves' Seveek With
Corynthean Sharing Dreams. Full of
character. Showed well and moved OK when settled. In need of better coat. 3rd Parker-Tucker
Uniquecottage Fennel. Good quality honest Cairn. Limit (13, 3) A very good
quality class. I would have liked to have 10 placings to reward the quality
in this class. Each one of the Cairns in this class was worthy of a place. 1st Vaugham's Penticharm
Knight Star, considered for RCC. Well up to size, has lovely balance and
typical outline. Pretty feminine head with good eye placement, shape and
colour. Correct ear placement and head structure. Lovely length of neck
flowing into satisfactory shoulders, lovely spring of rib and length of loin.
Well made backend. All her virtues fitted together to produce a very typy
Cairn who moved out well around the ring. 2nd Thomas' Tycadno
Dancing Star. Not at all focused today which was a shame as she is of great
quality. She would not show her movement off at all today, she is made right
and I would expect her to move well but she had other ideas! Lovely head,
correct throughout, carrying a little too much weight. Her day will come! 3rd Petts' Brenndarcy Hunky
Dory Among Doonrae. Very pretty bitch, longer cast than 1st and 2nd, pretty
head with strong neck flowing into good shoulders. Very showy typy Cairn. 4th William's Seveek
Country Sunset at Corynthean. Lovely shape and balance, moved soundly but carrying
too much weight today. 5th Catto's Birselaw Paige
Turner. Lovely type of Cairn from a larger mould but lovely to go over and
everything where it should be. There were five unplaced
Cairns of great type and quality. A superb class. Open (8,2) Six Cairns
present and all of top quality. I thought the first two made a "great
pair" together 1st Yates-Johnson's Ch
Pendley Vivien, BCC & BIS. I wrote in my notes "outstanding".
Lovely head, correctly made with width and substance but maintaining femininity.
Lovely sized ears correctly placed. Strong neck of medium length, lovely
shoulders producing great forward reach on the move. My hands flowed down her
neck, over her clean shoulders along her level firm topline and into a well
set on tail, which was of substance. Great backend correctly constructed
which enabled her to drive herself around the ring with ease. I could quite
easily pull up a comfy chair and watch her "go" all day! A top
quality Cairn of great type with that "X" factor that took her to 1st
place over some other very good quality Cairns in this class. 2nd Parker-Tucker's
Uniquecottage Florey, RCC & Res BIS. Very similar type to 1st. loved her
feminine head and construction throughout which is so typical. She looked a
picture standing, great balance and outline. She was on top form today. To go
over, she is well constructed with everything where it should be. She took
RCC over some lovely bitches and RBIS over the dog, who himself is
outstanding. This bitch was flowing in her movement in the final challenge.
Same sire as the RDCC winner 3rd Felters & Rumens'
Lentricia Fame at Landbuck. A lovely quality bitch with great femininity.
Very showy, loved her size and type, well made throughout. Couldn't match 1st
and 2nd for front action on the move. 4th Dolan's Ch Glenrood
Spell Dance JW and 5th Braybrook's Cloverbrook Copyright, these two bitches
are of great quality and should not be dismayed with 4th and 5th in this
exceptionally strong class. 4th is an upstanding typy bitch who showed herself
well but, for me couldn't match the femininity of 1st -3rd. 5th is a lovely
bitch with much to like. She has everything where you want it and moved out
around the ring. I really would have liked
6 CC's for this open class – the only one "unplaced" was a quality
bitch too Keeves' Ch Seveek Hopes N Dreams JW Sh.CM. Dawn Inett (Carradine) |
