Southern Counties Championship Dog Show

27th June 2021

Cairn Terrier Judge’s Report

The first Championship Show for 15 months was approached by all with some understandable apprehension and was an enormous undertaking for Southern Counties Canine Association, I thank them for offering me this appointment following the cancellation of their 2020 show. I would also like to thank my very efficient steward who kept everything flowing smoothly. For me it was a day of privilege, huge responsibility and a big surprise.

My steward and I had agreed some time ago to make it as safe and comfortable as possible for our exhibitors some of whom have had a really tough time over the last year. We may have gone over and above what was required but we felt everybody deserved respect.

It is four years since I last judged so almost without exception all the dogs were ‘new’ to me, despite lockdown all were confident and showing well. However the general condition of some was not as good as it should be and several were not well muscled.  Cairns are a working terrier and as such should give the impression of being fit for purpose. Unfortunately hind movement has not improved and in fact seems to have deteriorated. Coats as always at different stages, but they should always be tidy and clean. Mouths/teeth were fine although I did find one exhibit with rather lighter eyes than desirable.

My DCC/BOB was a fine upstanding already established Champion, great ambassador for the breed, RDCC rather smaller dog but a real extrovert. The surprise was my BCC/BP, just 8 months she outshone her older sister who took the RBCC.

PGD    6          1. Dennis & Waites’ GOOD TIMES AHEAD WITH OUDENARDE Smart well made dog, masculine head and good length of neck into correct front and fore chest.  Level top line which he kept when moving. Presented in good coat, should have a bright future.

                        2.  Shopland’s CHERRYCRACK MOONREAKUR Larger dog than 1 and a little long cast, masculine head with dark eye and typical expression. Correct coat, moved well when he concentrated.

                        3. Keeves SEVEEK CARRY ON THE DREAM

LD       1          1. Brookes SEVEEK DANISH DELIGHT AT ZETAMAZ  Rather short coupled cobby dog and carrying quite a bit of weight. Keen expression with dark eye and excellent large teeth he showed well, however coat although coming in would benefit from tidying.

OD      4          1. Firth’s CH CAIRNGOLD CHICO JW Strong red dog with lovely head and expression, good angulation and presented in top condition and coat, moved with plenty of drive, had just the bit of ‘assertion’ I like to find. CC & BOB

                        2. Harrison’s CARRADINE WHISKEY OSCAR Smaller than 1, but all in proportion, attractive head and expression, good dark eye, well set on neck into good front and level top line. Moved and showed well, well presented as usual from this exhibitor, would just like a bit more of him. RCC

V         3 (1)     1. Lamb & Saltmarshs’ RENSHAW THERE AND BACK AGAIN UNDER MACMOON SHCM VW IR VET CH          He belies his 10 years, good shape dog, teeth in very good order, coat not at its best, still moves well and enjoys showing. BV

                        2. Paige’s GLENROOD TROJAN PRINCE Similar remarks apply although he does carry a bit too much weight.

GC      3(1)      1. Hooton & Hughes’ PENTICHARM IT’S MY PARTY Very smart bitch, very feminine head with good stop and dark eye. Correct length of neck into good front, level back but would like just a bit more length. Very attentive to her handler and beautifully presented.

                        2. Lund’s CAIRNGOLD BRANDY SNAP OF JORVIKAIRN  Lovely head and expression, correct neck into good front, level top line with well set on tail, her coat not at it’s best and she still has some maturing to do.

MPB    3          1. Waugh’s GLORY DAZE AT TRIBANNON Caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring. 8 months cream with beautiful head and expression, good big teeth, she meets the standard so well. In good coat, quite well grown and quite mature. So very confident she really flowed round the ring. Delighted to award her BCC & BP

                        2. Osborn’s TWESLAM BE GIN THE MAGIC Attractive red puppy with lovely head and expression, good stop, neck and front, still a very raw baby who desperately wants to please but a bit overawed as yet.

                        3. Keeves SEVEEK LICENSE TO DREAM

PB       1(1)

JB        3          1. Soper’s ELITECHARM SHOWGIRL 14 months, not a big bitch, lovely head and feminine expression, good fore chest and front, still very immature and perhaps a bit overweight, very attentive, she won this class on her movement.

                        2. Mcintyre’s CANWOOD QUIET WHISPER Larger bitch of good proportions, attractive head, good front and shoulders, in good coat, hind movement not so positive as 1.

                        3. Shannon & Storrs’ DOONRAE REBEL REBEL AMONG BRENDARCY

PGB    5          1. Hooton & Hughes’ PENTICHARM IT’S MY PARTY

            2. Keeves SEVEEK EVERLASTING DREAMS Lovely head with dark eye, would like a little more bone however correctly made and balanced, bit reticent on the table. New coat will help.

                        3. Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE SILVER SOLO

LB       6          1. Firth’s CAIRNGOLD CHIQUITITA       Another red from this kennel, attractive head with good stop, large teeth and dark eye. Standing well forward with correct lay back of shoulders into level top line and well set on tail, completely balanced. In excellent coat, she moved true.

2. Kinton’s CLOVERBROOK UNBREAKABLE AT WOODTHORPE Another attractive feminine bitch with lovely head, well defined stop and good expression. Correct front, shoulders and length making a balance outline. Not moving so well today as 1 but showed well, her coat not at its best.

                        3. Inett, Clayton & Harrisons’ CARRADINE JO

OB      6(1)      1. Dolan’s WHISPERS AT DAWN AT GLENROOD JW I have long admired this bitch and I was    not disappointed. Very feminine, super head and expression, best of fronts and shoulders, level top line retained on the move, she covers the ground well with good reach. Presented in good coat. Unfortunately today she didn’t sparkle in the Challenge as I know she can and was outshone by her very much younger sister. RCC

2. Ballinger’s CLOVERBROOK MAID FOR GOLD Another attractive bitch, good head and expression, correct front, neck and shoulders into a very level back and balanced outline. Today her coat was not at its best.

                        3. Yates-Johnson’s PENDLEY DINAH
