Critique, Cairn Terrier Club Ch. Show 27th March 2022.

I would like to thank The Cairn Terrier Club Committee for inviting me to judge their 2022 Ch. Show. I have not judged the breed for 2 years due to the Covid 19 upsetting the show scene, so the majority of the dogs were new to me and many were shown for the first time. I was pleased with the quality of my entry and thank those exhibitors for travelling a long way to support me. The majority of those present did justice to the quality in the breed, but of course, there were a few who carried faults which I did not find to be profuse. Today’s Cairns are shorter in back and higher on the leg when compared with yesteryears models and they now exhibit a pitter-patter movement around the ring with a shorter stride. However, I do not consider this a fault as they still move smoothly with drive. Coats are much more highly trimmed these days. I enjoyed my day and thank everyone for providing me with this great opportunity. I only wish I had had more top prizes to hand out.

SV. Dog or Bitch. (4,  2Abs)

  1. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Sh Cm VW Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon, Grey Brindle 8 yrs old with a smart outline and in good condition; steady on the move and well handled.
  2. Miller’s Cornton Dark Corrie. 9 yrs old Dark Brindle. A bit heavier in build than 1, but another steady mover with a pleasing outline. Just preferred 1 on the day.

Minor Puppy Dog. (5, 1Abs)

  1. Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon. 6 Mth Dark Brindle baby. A very nice all round dog with a balanced outline and smart profile. Good head and level topline with correct tailset. Moved well when settled; shows excellent promise. BOS puppy.
  2. Catto’s Birselaw The Miller’s Dance. A 7 Mth wheaten. Slightly larger than 1, but still well balanced overall and in good coat at this early stage. A happy dog who moved well and pressed hard for honours.
  3. Inett’s Carradine Pickled Onion. 6 Mth red. I’m sure will do well given time to mature.

Puppy Dog. ( 3, 1Abs)

  1. Pett’s Doonrae Sentinel. (9 Mth dark brindle. A lovely puppy with good head and good length of neck, level topline and correct tailset. Presented an excellent profile from the side. Moved well with drive around the ring; straight fore and aft. I liked him a lot, hence Best Pup in Show.
  2. Saich’s Lindcoly Indiana Jones. 7 Mth who did not give off his best today on the table or in the ring. I’m sure he will do better as his experience in the show ring improves.

Junior Dog (1)

  1. Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic AI. Just out of puppy. A lovely young wheaten dog who performed well, presenting a pleasing balanced outline. Good head with expression, nice shoulders into a level topline, correct tailset and sturdy rear quarters. Moved steadily, parallel front and rear, enjoying himself with confidence. RDCC.

Yearling Dog. (1)

  1. Saich’s Lindcoly Outta Sight. A dark brindle. A happy fellow who gave a reasonable performance providing a balanced outline, but was a little haphazard on the move. He needs a little more substance as he fully matures.

Novice Dog.  (0)

Postgraduate Dog. (2, 1 Abs)

  1. Munday;s  Lentrica Mystic Warrior. Dark brindle. Up to size with plenty of substance and ample bone. Good head and expression. Good body conformation. Movement was a little wayward going away.

Limit Dog.  (2, 1 Abs)

  1. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Come Dancing with Macmoon OSW JW Sh.Cm ShCEx Dark Brindle. A little heavy in front, but a pleasant outline from the side. A good strong head, good shoulder placement, strong well muscled rear quarters. Moved steadily, but a little close behind.

Open Dog.  (3, 1 Abs)

  1. Firth’s Cairngold Chico JW.  Red. I really liked this dog and found he had a well balanced body. Lovely masculine head with good stop and correct bite. Well laid back shoulders, leading into level topline and correct tailset. Strong rear quarters. He moved well around the ring, true both ways and from the side. Awarded DCC, Res BIS, BOS.
  2. Waite’s, Goddard & Dennis’ Good Times Ahead With Oudenarde, Red brindle. A heavier, larger build than 1. A good looking dog with pleasing head and expression. Good stop and correct bite, strong rear quarters and in good coat. Went well on the move.

Special Beginners (dog or Bitch)  (1)

  1. Irwin’s Carradine Corwin Zoe. A 2 Yr grey brindle bitch. A nice bitch with reasonable conformation and movement. May well improve with time.

Minor Puppy Bitch.  (4, 0 Abs).

  1. Firth’s Birselaw Cora at Cairngold. 7 Mth Dark brindle. A lovely head and expression, good stop, correct bite. Level topline and correct tailset. Good conformation and size. Moved steadily with drive.
  2. Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Precious Pumpkin Pie a 6 Mth red. Another lovely bitch who presented a pleasing balanced outline. A good head, level topline and strong rear quarters. A good coat coming. A happy lass enjoying herself on the move.
  3. Goud’s Breezykinghussie Molly Connel

Puppy Bitch. (1)

  1. Saich’s Lindcoly Yeh Baby. Red brindle. Scared of something so unsettled on the table and on the move. Showed a good outline fleetingly. Hopefully will do better next time out.

Junior Bitch.  (2,  1 Abs)

  1. Waugh’s Glory Daze at Tribannon. 16 Mth. Wheaten. Presented in excellent condition. Nice head, level topline and correct tailset. Overall good conformation leading to excellent movement. A good example of the breed. I liked her a lot.

Yearling Bitch.  (2,  0 Abs).

  1. Shannon & Storr’s Doonrae Rebel Rebel among Brenndarcy. Red brindle. A splendid profile sideways. Good head and expression, level back , well muscled rear. Moved well with drive.
  2. Saich’s Lindcoly Witches Brew. A lively young lady which made it difficult to assess, but provided just enough to compete with 1 to give a good run for her money.

Novice Bitch.  (1).

  1. Irwin’s Carradine Corwin Zoe.

(see Special Beginners D or B)

Post Graduate Bitch.  (4,  0 Abs)

A close decision on all four exhibits in this class.

  1.  Miller’s Cornton Fyne Hope. Grey Brindle. A very nice overall balanced type with lovely head and neat ears. Well placed shoulders, level topline and correct tailset. Moved and handled well.
  2. Thompson’s Castleline Maitree. A light red. Another nice bitch with good conformation presenting a pleasing picture. So, moved well around the ring. Just lost out to 1 today.
  3. Goud’s Lentrica Liberty Bell. A good example of the breed, but unfortunate to meet 1 & 2 on this occasion.

Limit Bitch.  (2).

A couple of super bitches.

1.    Pett’s Rasken’s Joan Jett for Doonrae (Imp Swe). A well presented and perfectly balanced bitch. Good, stop and correct bite. Well placed shoulders, pleasing body and sturdy rear quarters. Moved well with drive. A happy girl with great attitude. Res BCC.

2.    Felter’s and Rumen’s Landbuck La Voix. Wheaten. This bitch also impressed me. Loved her outline from the side. She moved well, true both ways, front and rear. Just preferred 1 today.

Open Bitch. (3,  1 Abs).

  1. Firth’s Cairngold Chiquitita. Red. Really caught my eye today. My vision of the perfect Cairn. Lovely feminine head with good length of neck running into a level topline and correct tailset. Strong rear quarters. A lovely feminine example and great showgirl giving a super show on the move. Beat her Dad today. BCC, BIS.
  2. Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Joe. Grey brindle. Another lovely specimen with lots to commend. Great conformation, looked super both on the stand and on the move.

I just preferred 1’s movement today.
