CRITIQUE

CAIRN TERRIERS 11th March 2023

A very big thank you to Crufts for this very prestigious judging appointment. What an honour and the pinnacle of anyones judging career, and what an absolutely fabulous day in the Cairn ring.

Thank you to all of the exhibitors, both from home and from abroad, and thank you to my stewards, Kim and Ken, who kept me on the straight and narrow most of the time.

The quality of the majority of the Cairns was excellent.

I think that this was a very unique day for the Cairn Breed.

On a general note, movement could have been better. Quite a few dogs had jumbled or missing teeth and some had dirty teeth!  Coats were generally very good, but there were a few open coats, and some had ‘products’ on their coats, which hadn’t been groomed out properly. Temperaments of our breed were sound.

DCC & BOB - (Short listed in Terrier Group) – Multi Ch. Hjohoo’s Yes Hjo Can  [ATC52912SWE] (Miss Theodorsson)

RDCC & BV – Ch Woodthorpe I Know the Code (Mrs Kinton)

BCC – Ch Cairngold  Chiquitita  (Mr A, Mrs L & Miss A M Firth)

RBCC – Birselaw Caol IIa at Landbuck. Mr A & Mr A A Felters & Rumens)

VETERAN DOG – Entries 5

1st  Kintons, Ch. Woodthorpe I know the Code. 9yr old dark brindle. Love his masculine head and expression, Good reach of neck,  strong level topline. Good depth of brisket, well muscled hind quarters. Moved and showed well.BV & RDCC

2nd Jansen-Kalshoven, NL/INT/CAN/AM GR CH Nordcairn’s Rocket Man(IMP DEN) 7yr old wheaten with dark points, with the best of coats. A size smaller than 1st, but well proportioned. Good mouth, masculine head and expression. Good shoulder placement and depth in brisket. Strong topline and tailset. Well muscled quarters, which allowed him to go around the ring with ease.

3rd Lamb & Saltmarsh, Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon ShCM VW. 9 yr old dark brindle, good head, well proportioned, level topline, good tailset, well muscled quarters, moved with drive.

MINOR PUPPY DOG – No Entries.

PUPPY DOG – Entries 2

1st  Jones & Arnolds, Tycadno Tom Foolery – Just 2 weeks short of 12 months. Well made wheaten, nice head and expression, firm topline, good tailset. Well balanced. Moved well.

2nd  Ballingers, Cloverbrook Game Set and Match. 10 month old, grey brindle. Strong masculine head. Nicely placed shoulders, deep brisket. Long in loin, which spoils his balance and conformation.

JUNIOR DOG – Entries 3

1st Hiam’s Carradine Arfa Pint JW. Red brindle in good coat.  Good head with well set ears, good depth of brisket, level topline and good tailset.. Strong hind quarters making for good movement.

2nd Asmyhr’s Corynthean Sunspotter at Motoppen. Wheaten, another in good coat. Not a lot between him and the 1st, very similar conformation and movement.

3rd Gordon’s King’s Scotch and Soda  Glen Brullemail.  Masculine head and expression, well proportioned, good depth of brisket and level topline. Carry’s his tail a bit high when excited, which spoilt his outline.

YEARLING DOG – Entries 5, (I Abs)

1st Pett’s, Doonrae Sentinel. Wheaten Brindle. Typical Cairn head and expression, good mouth. Nice length of neck, level topline. Strong hind quarters, moved well. Promising future.

2nd Goldstein’s IL Ch Hjohoo’s HJO Make Me Smile CRMLW22.  Dark Brindle in good coat, very alert. Masculine head and expression, nice eye, good stop, large teeth. Very similar to 1st, except for movement and carriage of tail.

3rd Lucas & Tobutt’s Seveek Country Lad, grey brindle, correct texture coat, short on head furnishings at present. needs to mature and muscle up, moved ok.

POST GRADUATE DOG – Entries 3(1 Abs)

1st  Morley’s Kanawha Spy Man. Grey brindle, nice head and expression, good neck set onto well placed shoulders. Firm topline. Good tailset. Needs more hair on his hind legs to finish the picture. Moved well.

2nd Bingham’s Carradine Bumbling Boris. Smaller in size to 1st, but everything in proportion. Good masculine head, good mouth. Not as positive in movement as 1st.

LIMIT DOG - Entries 6

1st Parker-Tuckers Uniquecottage Grey Borage. Wheaten, with a ‘profuse’ coat. Masculine head and expression, have watched this dog blossom and he’s just beginning to come into his own. He’s as sound as a pound. Solid topline, good tailset. Well muscled hind quarters, that gave him the drive around the ring. Just needs a bit more animation. A dog to watch.

2nd Theodorsson’s Hjohoo’s I’m addicted to Hjo. Grey brindle. Loved his outline. He’s got everything going for him, but not so good on his front movement. Showed well.

3rd Shopland’s Cherrycrack Horatio. Wheaten in good coat. Loved his head and expression, good neck, good shoulder placement, level topline and moved well, but could have shown a bit more animation.

OPEN DOG – ENTRIES 13 (1 Abs)

What an absolutely stunning class, I was spoilt for choice, however it turned out to be a family affair.

1st Theodorsson’s Multi Ch Hjohoo’s Yes Hjo Can (Handled by Merril Schmitt), and what a duo they made. This is one special dog, as I have said before a ‘once in a lifetime dog’.

Handler and dog were as one, it was a pleasure to watch them. The show ring was his and didn’t he know it.

There is nothing I can say that has already been said by judges that have previously had the pleasure to go over him.  He certainly was a ‘show stopper’. I was honoured to award him the D.C.C. and B.O.B. He was also shortlisted in the Terrier Group.

2nd Theodorsson’s US Ch/se(u) Ch/dkCh/nouCh. Hjohoo’s It’s Hjour Time to Shine. Red, with good coat. Litter brother to 1st. Another excellent dog from this kennel, out of a slightly bigger mould than his brother, but preferred the conformation and movement of 1st.

3rd Well, “Whose the daddy?” Firth’s Ch. Cairngold Chico JW, Sire of 1st & 2nd, he has certainly put his stamp on his two sons. Not only is he producing the goods, but he can also strut his stuff in the showring.

VETERAN BITCH – ENTRIES 3 (1 Abs)

2nd Rasanen’s C.i.b. Fi Mva Ee Mva Lv Mva Lt Mva Balt Mva Ru Mva By Mva Rkfv Baltv-2 Heathermoor Iolanda. 8 yr old dark brindle, very similar to 1st, but preferred the movement of the winner.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH – ENTRIES 1

1st Tester’s AirytykesJust Mischief 8 month old red. She was a little nervous, and dropped her tail, which didn’t help. Her head furnishings were sparse. Good double coat. Needs a bit more ring training.

OPEN BITCH – ENTRIES 15 (Abs.1)

1st Firth’s Ch. Cairngold Chiquitita. Red (a Chico daughter)!! Beautifully balanced, Gave her Best Puppy in breed at her first championship show just over 3 years ago, and she didn’t disappoint today. Excellent feminine head and expression, still has that  mischievous look in her eyes. Always alert and animated, moved effortlessly around the ring. BCC.

2nd Jansen-Kalshoven’s NL CH/INT CH Cobby Body Kaffee Karamel NJK’18 JWW’18. Red Brindle, beautifully put down. Best of heads, teeth and muzzle. Nicely angulated producing good rear movement.
