Super Special Rosettes For the Top Winners

Rosemary Left Dog sitting Again!

Sunday 3rd. December 2023

I would like to thank the MCTC Committee for giving me the opportunity to Judge their 39th. Championship Show.  I would particularly like to thank my Steward, Chris Petts, for his help in assisting me with my disability. I found my entry to be of good quality. There were a few dogs that were heavy in front and some that lacked free movement. Some classes exhibited a challenging scene for top honours, but I was very happy with my winners. It was a shame that the puppy classes had very few entries. This does not look good for the future of our hobby. Let us hope the situation improves to benefit prospects for the breed.

Veteran Dog or Bitch.  (5,2A).

1.            Dolan’s Ch. Glenrood  Scheherazade. A 10 yr lovely  wheaten brindle oldie in remarkable condition. Makes a very good outline with excellent features. Good head, body, legs. Still has plenty of ring presence. Moved well around the ring. BV.

2.            Inett, Harrison, King and Leighton’s  Ch. Carradine George Flies with Harkenleigh. A 9 yr dark brindle, heavier build and not as well balanced than 1. Did not move quite as freely as 1.

3.         Smith’s Cannwood Misty Dawn at Gethlee.

Minor Puppy Dog.  (1,0A).

1.    Sinclair’s Tycadno Quick Shot. An 8mth wheaten. Good head, correct bite, level topline and correct tailset. Well grown with a balanced outline. Moved well, but a little close behind. Will improve with maturity.

Puppy Dog.  (0)

Junior Dog.  (3,1A)

1.    Roberts’ Cannwood Moonlight Shadow. A 14 month wheaten brindle with good head, super teeth, good stop and well balanced outline. Nice length of neck, level topline and correct tailset. Strong hind quarters, but coat on the blow. Best mover of the two, liked him a lot.

2.    Inett and Harrison’s Carradine Ayer Friar. A 13mth red brindle, another good example, slightly smaller than 1, but still presented an excellent, balanced outline. Coat in super condition, moved well, but a little wayward.

Post Graduate Dog.  (2, 1A).

1.    Inett and Harrison’s Carradine Apple Jack. An excitable 14 month red dog. Very unsteady around the ring. Just about did enough to be judged, but difficult to give top marks. Nice enough conformation and will do better given time.

Limit Dog.  (6,3A).

1.    Munday’s  Lentrica Mystic Warrior. Dark brindle dog, well boned in build. Super head, with varminty look, level topline and correct tailset. Slightly heavy in front and moved well with drive. Pipped 2 to gain honours.

2.    Clark’s  Furythor Mr Bojangles by Lentrica. A grey brindle dog that gave 1 a challenge for first

Slightly lighter build than 1, but a well balanced outline and good conformation. Moved well. A close decision between the two.

3.    Lucas’s Seveek Country Lad.

Open Dog.   (8,1A)  A super class creating a real challenge for honours.

1.    Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Borage. A wheaten dog who has improved with presentation. An excellent head and good stop. Good length of neck and layback of shoulders into level topline with correct tail set. Displays a good balanced outline. Best mover in class, hence DCC/BIS.

2.    Shannon, Storr and Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic. A wheaten brindle dog of slightly smaller conformation than 1, but nevertheless still presents a balanced outline. Good all round features with nothing to dislike. Also moved well today, but pipped by 1. RDCC

3.    Waugh’s  Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon.

Special Beginners Dog or Bitch.  (2,0)

1.         Sinclair’s  Tycadno Quick Shot.

2.         Metcalf-Sault’s  Cannwood Quiet Reflections. A grey brindle who could not match the quality of 1 in conformation or movement. Her performance was OK, but did not match the ring presence of 1 today.

Minor Puppy Bitch.   (2,0A)

1.    Shaw’s   Tycadno Star Attraction at Honeyhall. A 7 month wheaten. A well presented youngster showing a good profile to side. Good head with correct bite, level topline, correct tail set and firm rear quarters. Flowed around the ring moving parallel both front and back. BP.

2.    Inett and Harrison’s Dechamberay Lady Margo of Carradine. A 6 month red brindle who was a little unsettled in the ring today. Gave a satisfactory performance. Needs more head furnishings and a calmer demeaner. Will do better given time.

Puppy Bitch. (1,1A)

Junior Bitch.  (5,1A)

1.         Inett and Harrison’s  Carradine Picadd Lily. A 13mth red brindle and a fine example of the breed. Good head, level topline and strong rear quarters. A well balanced girl, but needs a little maturity to progress. Moved freely and straight, both front and rear.

2.         Shannon and Storr’s  Brenndarcy Witches Promise. Another fine junior who gave 1 a good run for honours. Good head, but body needs a little more substance. Moved freely in the ring.

3.         Parker-Tucker’s Birselaw Floral Dancer of Uniquecottage.

Post Graduate Bitch.  (8,1A)  A lovely class of girls.

1.    Smith’s Cloverbrook Shining Star Over Gethlee . A grey brindle bitch. Quite a big girl, but not oversize. Good head and stop with nice layback of shoulders. Good length of neck into level topline and correct tailset. Best mover in this class.

2.    Parker-Tucker’s Red Charvil.  A red brindle who also gave a good performance. Lovely head and level topline presenting an excellent profile to the side. Was pipped on movement by 1.

3.     Waugh’s  Dazzle Me at Tribannon.

Limit Bitch.  (5,1A).

1.         Percy’s  Winetta Frankly My Dear.  A beautifully presented wheaten bitch. A good example with lovely head, body and front and rear quarters. Moved freely around the ring. Had to be in contention for top honours.

2.         Dolan’s  Glenrood Midnight Spell. A dark brindle bitch; a slender version compared to 1. However, was in excellent condition in all ways and gave 1 a challenge for first. Was just pipped by 1 on movement and furnishings.

3.         Parker-Tucker’s  Sandrio Zinnia of Uniquecottage.

Open Bitch.  (3,1A).

1.    Waugh’s  Ch. Glory Days at Tribannon. A brindle bitch presenting an excellent profile to the side. Good head, stop and bite. Nice flow of neck into shoulders and topline. Correct tailset and firm rear quarters. A well balanced bitch. Moved well around the ring with drive. Preferred her outline to 2, hence BCC/RBIS/BOS

2.    Felters and Rumens’ Ch. Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck.  A well presented and balanced dark red brindle bitch very pleasing to the eye. Correct head and body proportions with level topline and good tailset. Moved well in the ring, just preferred the outline of 1 today. RBCC.

Brace.  (1)

1.    Metcalf- Sault’s Brace. Two slightly different coloured cairns, but matched in size. They moved around the ring in unison and enjoyed their performance as a pair.

Anthony Osborn (Judge)

Winner of The Best Head Competition. Ch Birselaw Caol Ila At Landbuck – Judged by Milly Jennings

It has been a few years since I was in the Cairn ring at a show, and this time i was chosen as the mystery judge for the Best Head in Show at the Midland Club Ch. show .

I do not go to many shows now, and never have a catalogue, also some of the exhibitors I do not really know, so I was unaware of which Cairn belonged to whom . I was very pleased with the Cairns that the Judge of the day,  Anthony Osborne had picked out as his choice of good heads, only one did not have quite as deep a stop as I wanted. I was looking for a head 'small ,in proportion to the body ',with a deep stop, warm brown, slightly sunken eyes, correct ear set, not on the side of the head like a Westie, and of course a good bite . The hall was very cold, the weather forecast was not good, and I was aware that people wanted to get on their way home as soon as possible ,thank you for staying for me to see your lovely Cairns. I tried to make my choice as quickly as I could ,but checking up all the points that make a good head. I was pleased to see so many good heads, because in the reports on shows these days so many judges make no mention of the stop or ear set . Milly Jennings
