Results of Scottish Breeds Championship Show Cairn Terrier 25th March 2023

Judge: Mrs Jennifer Fairweather (Ock cairns)

I would like to thank the Scottish Breeds Canine show committee for my appointment to judge at their show and for making me feel so welcome. I would also like to thank all the cairn exhibitors for their entry, remember you will always take home the best cairn on the day what ever the judge says!

I was delighted with my Challenge Certificate winners and so proud my BOB was placed 2nd in the champion stakes that day.

All the cairns behaved so well but there were a couple who were reluctant to let me see in their mouths!

I was a bit concerned that several of the cairns had level bites, jumbled front teeth and dirty teeth so breeders please pay attention when breeding, mouths are important to a working cairn as they need to be able to grip their prey! Movement was not good in many exhibits and this is another thing that breeders should take note of. Another of my concerns was the lack of a fore chest in many of the cairns. The breed standard says cairns should stand well forward, I didn’t always see this on the day. However my DCC, RCC, BCC, RBCC and BPIB I felt were all outstanding cairns and I wish them luck in future shows.

BCC and BOB given to Mrs A Waugh with Ch Glory Daze at Tribannon.

RCC Mr A & Mr R A Felters & Rumens Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck.

DCC was given to Mrs M Hogarty, Cadagio Another Day in Paradise NAF.

RCC Miss L Hiam Carradine Arfa Pint JW.

BPIB Mrs P Clarke Furythor Mr Bojangles by Lentrica. In this challenge brother, sister and one other puppy from junior dog challenged for BP. Very little to choose between these three lovely puppies but I chose the dog puppy. His handler had a job to keep him in check while showing but I thought he showed better, had a better coat and head. The brother and sister are two lovely puppies who will change places at another show.

Two siblings, very similar puppies with little to choose between them.

1st Place Mrs P Clarke Furythor Mr Bojangles by Lentrica. He is a silver brindle although still to finish growing his head furnishing. A correct double coat. He has a good length of neck into sloping shoulders, good stop, all in all a very nice head, dark eye and neat ears. He has a level topline and tail set correct moved with drive although playing his handler up a bit.

2nd Place Ms H & Mr G Young & Lithgow, Furythor Orion. A very nice puppy very similar comments to 1st. Just lost out to 1st as preferred 1st’s coat and head.

Junior Dog Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1st Place Mrs M Hogarty, Cadagio Another Day in Paradise NAF. DCC. This lovely red dog is just over a year old so still has some maturing to do but his appearance, conformation and showmanship made him stand out in the challenge for the DCC. He was a bit short of coat but what was there was of the correct type so I was reluctant to penalise this. He has a good stop, large clean teeth with a scissor bite. Dark hazel eyes, neat ears and a lovely expression giving him a lovely masculine head, full of mischief! A cairn bred to do his job! His fore chest enabled him to stand well forward as he should do. Ribs correct shape, his topline was level and held on the move. A very good mover, driving from the rear. A natural showman, once in full coat should do well.

2nd Place Mrs J A & Mr G Jones & Arnold Tycadno Tom Foolery. Wheaten in full coat, dark eye and very nice head with dark points. Correct tail set and level topline moved well. Not much between these two dogs, just the first moved better.

3rd Place  Mrs A Waugh Swing Dancer at TribannonClass 45.

1st Place Mrs A Waugh Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon A very nice dark brindle, lovely head and deep stop. Correct oval ribs and level topline.  It was a shame he was so  difficult to handle on the table and his movement was impossible to judge. More Ringcraft training is needed.

Limit Dog Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1st Place Miss B M, Mr D & Mrs M Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst Brenndarcy It's Magic (ai). Wheaten dog with lots to like about him. Deep stop and dark eyes, ear set correct, all in all, giving him a lovely head. He has sloping shoulders and good length of neck. Level topline, held on the move. Movement good going away and towards me. I was splitting hairs between 1st and 2nd.

2nd Place Miss S C & Miss E S Munday Lentrica Mystic Warrior A lovely silver brindle, showed himself very well. Lovely head, good stop and dark eyes. Ear placement correct. Good length of neck into sloping shoulders. Movement was correct.

3rd Place Ms J & Mr B Lamb & Saltmarsh Birselaw Come Dancing with Macmoon OSW JW ShCEx ShCM

Open Dog Entries: 4 Absentees: 0 A very strong class of cairns with little to choose between them. Places were chosen on showmanship and movement. Several of these cairns were reluctant to show themselves. The winner was shown to perfection.

1st Place Miss L Hiam Carradine Arfa Pint JW. RCC. This red brindle is 18 months old so, another youngster with a bit more maturing to do. I liked the way he showed himself, standing well forward, on his toes all the time and so in tune with his handler. A deep stop, dark points, neat ears. He has the correct, almond shaped hazel eyes. He too has a lovely head and expression. Topline, level and held on the move. His correct angulations meant he would move well. His tail set was bang on. Coat, correct texture but still growing. His mouth is correct. Splitting hairs between the DCC and RCC, two lovely dogs.

2nd Place S, A & A Dennis, Waites & Goddard, Ch Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde. A very nice dark cairn, has a good head, dark eyes and deep stop. Sadly he only started to show at the end of this class

3rd Place  D H & R A Inett & Harrison Ch Carradine In'n Out Mr Sprout

Reserve  Mr A, Mrs L & Miss A M Firth Ch Cairngold Chico JW

1st Place Miss S C & Miss E S Munday Furythor Marvel at Me . A lovely dark cairn nearly a year old, litter sister to the puppy dog. She showed nicely, has the correct coat. She has a very nice head with a dark eye, correctly placed ears and a deep stop. Mouth was correct bite with large teeth. Oval ribs to give space for heart and lungs. Topline correct and her angulations meant she moved well. A lovely show girl.

2nd Place D H & R A Inett & Harrison Carradine Tel Laura I Luv'er. A wheaten brindle with dark points only just 6 months old and very much a baby. I liked her head, very much a cairn. Showed so well. Movement was free flowing, Topline level and tail set correct.

3rd Place Mrs E R Parkin Svendalens Dancing Queen

Junior Bitch Entries: 2 Absentees: 1

1st Place Miss S & Mrs A Dennis & Waites Svendalens Snow Drop.  A cream bitch sadly lacking in coat which meant she had nothing to hide. What was coming through was harsh top coat and soft undercoat. Has a very nice head, deep stop, ear placement correct. Good reach of neck and shoulders. Level topline and moved very well. Showed well, alert all the time, deserved her place.

Graduate Bitch Entries: 3 Absentees: 1

1st Place D & R A & R Inett & Harrison & Bateman. Carradine Precious Pumpkin Pie. Red brindle, sister to my dog RCC, in full coat. Head was of a cairn with a dark hazel eye, ear placement correct, deep stop and large teeth with correct bite. She has the desired dark points! Level topline held on the move. Moved very well. A close decision between first and second placed in this class.

2nd Place Mr A, Mrs L & Miss A M Firth. Birselaw Cora at Cairngold . A dark cairn with lots to like. Short of coat but what’s coming through is correct. Has a lovely head, eye colour correct, good reach of neck into well set shoulders. Level topline held on the move. Moved very well.

Post Graduate Bitch Entries: 1 Absentees: 0

1st Place Mrs J Percy Winetta Frankly My Dear. A wheaten bitch in full coat and with lots to like about her. She has a very nice head with deep stop and lovely dark points. Mouth correct, hazel eyes of correct shape. She has a level topline , tail set correct and moved well as her angulations showed she would. Has a deep fore chest and stood well forward.

Limit Bitch Entries: 1 Absentees: 0

1st Place Mr A & Mr R A Felters & Rumens Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck. Another lovely cairn that has so much to like about her. A dark brindle in full coat showed so well and made my job so hard to decide between her and my BCC winner. Nineteen months old so, still a youngster. This cairn also has a beautiful head, has neat ears, placement correct. A good stop and correct mouth. Her angulations meant she moved very well keeping her topline level and driving from behind.

Open Bitch Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1st Place Mrs A Waugh Ch Glory Daze at Tribannon. BCC. A beautiful wheaten bitch in full coat and showed so well, my type of cairn and has that naughty streak we all love in our cairns! A lovely head with a deep stop, neat ears and dark hazel eyes that see into your soul! Her ears and muzzle have the desired dark points. Moved very well and showed so well. She was on her toes the whole time.

2nd Place  Mrs M Hogarty Ir Ch Cadagio Your One of Us. This was another lovely silver bitch who has a very nice head, correct ear placement, large clean teeth and correct scissor bite. Level topline and tail set correct, moved very well, lots to like about her. Unfortunately only started to show herself after I had placed the bitches in this class.

3rd Place Miss H Miller Cornton Fyne Hope
