WEST OF ENGLAND LADIES KENNEL SOCIETY

FRIDAY 26TH APRIL 2024.

CAIRN TERRIERS.

JUDGE: MRS LYNDA, F, HUGHES. (GYNCAIRN CAIRN TERRIERS)

I would like to thank the Society for the invitation of being a specialist Judge in my breed the Cairn Terrier. Although the numbers in all breeds are declining to continue inviting a specialist judge whenever possible hopefully continues to draw the entries, I hope?

Thank you to WELKS for the appointment to judge our wonderful Breed and a big thank you to my exhibitors for allowing me the pleasure of going over your lovely dogs.

I had seen some exhibits from the ringside on previous occasions, but only whilst officiating as secretary, so had not the time to study them. It was lovely to be able to have the time to finally go over them in detail.

Are our “Babies” waiting in the wings? I do hope so, sad to see the Puppy class’s so empty…

Coats at this time of year are always a challenge, however, I do have a preference for a good coat, although I appreciate that with some “colours” it is easier than others.

We have lovely temperaments on the whole and I feel that this is important when considering using stud dogs.

Where have our fore chests gone! There were a few on the day with a good fore chest, but only a few…Again, perhaps another attribute to consider when planning a breeding programme.

I found many pretty bitches and masculine dogs, which was an improvement from the last time that I judged.

Now for my favourite subject “shoulders”! I am of the old school and there is nothing more exciting for me than a good length of neck running into clean well laid-back shoulders. Unfortunately, I found very few of these today which made me a little sad.

On a positive note, I was very happy with my overall winners.

BEST OF BREED: PENDLEY SEA BREEZE (MRS J.M YATES-JOHNSON)

DOG C.C.:  CLOVERBROOK GAME SET NMATCH (MRS J BALLINGER)

RES, DCC:  BRENDARCY IT’S MAGIC (ai) (MISS, BM, SHANNON, MR, D STORR &MRS M MIDDLEHURST.

BITCH C.C: PENDLEY SEA BREEZE (MRS J.M. YATES-JOHNSON)

RES, BCC:  Ch GLORY DAZE AT TRIBANNON (MRS A WAUGH)

BEST PUPPY: CARRADINE MY WAY LENNY (MISS D INETT & MRS R HARRISON & MRS R BATEMAN)

BEST VETERAN:  CANNWOOD MISTY DAWN AT GETHLEE (MISS J H SMITH)

CLASS: VETERAN DOG: NO ENTRIES

CLASS: MINOR PUPPY DOG: NO ENTRIES

CLASS: PUPPY DOG: (2E-1A) 1st CARRADINE MY WAY LENNY (MISS, D & MRS R & MRS R, INETT, HARRISON, BATEMAN) Although this 10month old puppy stood alone in this class he is so smart and typical of this kennel. Beautiful coat, lovely expression, correct bite, good stop with neat ears which he used well completing the picture of a male puppy. Well bodied, he did not make it easy for his handler this morning but it was lovely to follow that he went on to achieve more awards later in the day.

CLASS: JUNIOR DOG: NO ENTRIES

CLASS: YEARLING DOG: NO ENTRIES

CLASS: POST GRADUATE DOG (1E) 1st TYCADNO MAGIC MAN (MR G THOMAS) Well presented and in full coat wheaten boy. Strong head, enough neck, well sprung ribs, a little on the “light side” but a very good reason for that!! topline was good and he was not over angulated, good front, he shows his drive when moving around the ring with no stops!

CLASS: LIMIT DOG: (3E) 1st CLOVERBROOK GAME SET NMATCH (MRS L BALLINGER) Not a dog I have ever seen before but to me he was all male and took my eye. Lovely to go over and “oh” what a neck and shoulders. Masculine head, good stop, good front, responded well to the handler she gets the best out of him, his balance and drive on the move confirmed for me to award him the DOG C.C.

2ND PENDLEY SEAFARER (MRS J YATES-JOHNSON) Red brindle dog, short on coat today but nothing to hide. Another with a masculine head, strong jaw with correct bite. I would prefer a little more layback of shoulders, he has well sprung ribs and I liked his balance, good rear muscle tone you can tell he is well exercised. Smart showman.

3rd SEVEEK COUNTRY LAD (MISS R & MR I LUCAS&TOBUTT)

CLASS: OPEN DOG: (6E-2A) 1ST BRENNDARCY IT’S MAGIC(AI) (MISS B & MR D & MRS M, SHANNON, STORR & MIDDLEHURST) A well balanced dog, in good coat, strong head and full complement of teeth. Good width between the ears, length of neck just right, level topline well-coated ribs, no over angulation and good drive on the move, not quite as true in front as the CC winner but he pushed hard. RES DOG C.C.

2ND UNIQUECOTTAGE GREY BORAGE (MISS A, R, PARKER-TUCKER) Very handsome Cream dog in a superb full coat which you rarely see in the ring these days. Strong masculine head, good stop, a fore chest! Topline was good with correct tail set I liked both these two boys but just preferred 1st today.

3RD CARRADINE APPLE JACK (MISS D.H & MRS R.A INETT & HARRISON)

CLASS: VETERAN BITCH: 1ST CANNWOOD MISTY DAWN AT GETHLEE (MISS J.H. SMITH) First of all a credit to her owner, this bitch for her age of just over 8yrs old is in top condition, A very pretty head with lovely neat ears, not the shoulders that I was looking for, well covered but good muscle tone on hind quarters, again another dog that you can tell gets exercise, she kept her topline when going around the ring effortless. BEST VETERAN

CLASS: MINOR PUPPY BITCH: NO ENTRIES.

CLASS: PUPPY BITCH: NO ENTRIES.

CLASS: JUNIOR BITCH: (2E-1A) 1ST TYCADNO STAR ATTRACTION AT HONEYHALL (MR I. SHAW) Not quite 13month’s old but what a stunning looking young lady! Very feminine head with a good stop and correct eye colour, well trained on the table and a pleasure to go over, angulation is not exaggerated. A balance and size that I like but wow when she matures!! Lovely to watch in the challenge going around the ring none stop, she kept her shape and a pleasure to watch the rapport between her and her handler.

CLASS: YEARLING BITCH: (3E-0A) 1ST BIRSLAW FLORAL DANCER OF UNIQUECOTTAGE (MISS A.R. PARKER-TUCKER) Very feminine cream bitch, one of the best heads today for type. Good depth of chest, movement not at is best today but she does not make it easy for her handler! in full coat and well presented.

2ND BRENNDARCY WITCHES PROMISE (MISS B & MR D SHANNON & STORR) Very full of herself Red Brindle, well balanced head with correct width between neat ears, I would have liked better shoulders but her topline was good and she had a good bend of stifle with correct tail set. She took a while to settle on the move and does not always show herself off to her full advantage.

3RD SVENDALENS DANCING QUEEN (MRS E R PARKIN)

CLASS: POST GRADUATE BITCH: (4E-1A) 1ST DAZZLE ME AT TRIBANNON (MRS A WAUGH) Attractive cream in full coat pleasing head, topline was good on the move, enough bone, correct angulation a little shy on the table but was much happier on the move and then she showed off her profile.

2ND CLOVERBROOK SHINING STAR OVER GETHLEE (MISS J SMITH) Grey brindle, up to size, good head and stop, clean shoulders, another with a good topline on the move. I preferred the overall balance of 1ST but still a lovely girl to go over.

3RD CANNWOOD QUIET REFLECTIONS (MRS J A METCALF-SAULT)

CLASS: LIMIT BITCH: (4E-0A) 1ST PENDLEY SEA BREEZE (MRS J M YATES-JOHNSON) Well where do I start? The most stunning bitch I have had the pleasure to go over for a long time. Beautiful expression and everything that I like about a bitch’s head, good front with nice tight pads, a topline that I would describe as “you could balance a plate on “I know that she had not got as much coat as I would normally like but there was nothing to hide. Good bend of stifle and well muscled in hind quarters, you can tell that this relates to exercise. Super show girl flowed effortlessly around the ring and never distracted from her handler. Pleased to award her BITCH C.C AND B.O.B.

2ND CASTLELINE MAITREE (MR S THOMPSON) Another pretty bitch but today lacked sparkle. Good stop, eye colouring and very good mouth. On the table her neck and shoulders were better than some others today but I still would have liked them cleaner for this mature bitch. Topline was good on the move, coming towards me was good. On the whole a well-balanced bitch.

3RD GLENROOD MAGIC SPELL (MRS S E DOLAN)

CLASS: OPEN BITCH: (5E-1A) 1ST Ch GLORY DAZE AT TRIBANNON (MRS A WAUGH) A lovely bitch to go over on the table, up to size but balanced, strong feminine head, good reach of neck and lovely clean shoulders running into level topline, no over angulation moved with drive. A worthy champion and you can understand why. RES BITCH C.C.

2ND Ch CAIRNGOLD CHIQUITITA (MR A, MRS L & MISS A M FIRTH) A striking red bitch and so well presented. Lovely head no mistaking her being a bitch, lovely expression and with what I call “gentle eyes” good topline and tail set which completed a balance to the standard. Good bend of stifle positive front. Another worthy champion but today just preferred the shoulders on 1st.

3RD CARRADINE PICADD LILLY (MISS D H & MRS R A HARRISON)

JUDGE: MRS LYNDA F HUGHES.
