I would like to thank the Committee of the Midland Cairn Terrier Club for inviting me to judge its Limited Show. A big thank you to my stewards, Pat Clarke and Chris Petts, for making sure things ran smoothly. I'd also like to thank the exhibitors for allowing me the opportunity of assessing their dogs.

The show was very well organised and the atmosphere very friendly, with all exhibitors accepting my decisions gracefully. The ringside support shown for fellow exhibitors was also encouraging to see.

I was pleased with my entry of 39, with not many absentees. Temperaments were all excellent and I only noted one incorrect mouth. Some dogs were carrying too much weight, which, in my opinion, affected their movement.

The breed saw a period where judges regularly commented that the quality in the bitch classes outshone that in the dogs. I was really pleased to see some quality Cairns in both sexes.

VD/B (3,1a)

  1. Ball’s Tweslam Izzy Wizzy Get Bizzy – 13 year-old red in harsh double coat. Correct bite and lovely expression. Correct shoulders and level topline. Steady movement. She was happy and sprightly and clearly enjoying her time in the ring.
  2. Davies’ Cloverbrook Harris Tweed – dark grey brindle. Attractive head with correct bite. Correct shoulders, level topline and correct tailset. Moved ok.

SBD (4)

  1. Purvis’ Mighty Rearranger With Mosspur – 2-year-old wheaten in harsh coat. Correct bite, neat ears and good head. Well off for rib. Level topline, which he held on the move. Moved steadily.
  2. Davies’ Cloverbrook Harris Tweed – 2nd in VD/B
  3. Dennis’ Svendalens Into Mischief

Res Wright’s Glenmont Nicodemus

MPD (1)

  1.   Petts’ Doonrae One Step Beyond – 6-months old wheaten. Good size for his age. Lovely head with desired dark points, neat ears, good stop and correct eyes, creating that typical Cairn expression. Strong jaw and scissor bite. Correct shoulders, good chest and well off for bone and substance. Shown in excellent condition. Considering his age, he moved soundly. (BPD & BPIS)

PD (2)

  1. Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Mister Tom – 10-months old well-balanced wheaten. Good head with correct bite, dark points and typical Cairn expression. Correct front assembly and correct neck flowing into level topline. Shown in excellent coat and condition. Moved well when he settled. Promising puppy.
  2. Peers’ Tweedisle Tugman – 11-months old wheaten. Another promising puppy with a pleasing head and expression. Correct bite and shoulders and shown in good coat. Level topline. Good angulations. Movement not as positive as 1.

JD (1)

  1. Dennis’ Svendalens Into Mischief – 13-months old wheaten, shown in good coat and condition. Well-balanced outline. Correct front assembly, good forechest and level topline. Moved steadily.

MD (1)

1.      Purvis’ Mighty Rearranger With Mosspur – 1st in SBD

PGD  (3)

  1. Peers’ Performing The Dream For Tweedisle – 21-months old wheaten presented in good coat. Correct bite and neat ears. Good neck and shoulders. Level topline and tail carried correctly. Good angulations. Moved well. Would prefer a touch more length in back to complete the outline for me. A nice Cairn.
  2. Parkin’s Carradine My Mate Matthew – a well-balanced grey brindle with a large skull, pronounced stop and lovely expression. He had a correct scissor bite and a good forechest. His topline was level when standing and his tail set bang on. Shown in quality coat. He could move with more drive behind and he didn’t hold his topline on the move, which gave number 1 the edge today. Another nice Cairn.
  3. Wright’s Glenmont Nicodemus

LD (1)

1.                            Waites’ Svendalens Perserverance With Lentrica – grey brindle shown in harsh double coat. Broad skull, neat ears and good stop. Correct scissor bite, strong jaw and good reach of neck flowing into level topline, held on the move. A balanced dog that moved with drive. (RBD)

OD (2)

1.      Marshall’s Brenndarcy Lord Marmaduke Avec Strathgarten - masculine wheaten that caught my eye as he entered the ring. Broad skull, neat ears and a strong jaw with correct scissor bite. Pronounced stop. Good shoulder placement and nice reach of neck that flows into a firm, level topline. Presented in excellent coat and condition. He moved with drive and purpose. A well-balanced dog. I liked him a lot. (BD & BIS)

2.      Peers’ Tweedisle Relight My Fire – well-balanced red dog. Nice head with desired dark points. Correct scissor bite and pronounced stop. Level topline and good tail set. Moved steadily. Outer coat could be a touch harsher.

SBB (1)

  1. Melia’s Roachdee Tickle Toffee – dark grey brindle.  A very pretty bitch with a lovely expression. Correct scissor bite, strong jaw and neat ears. Shown in excellent condition. She moved well on a loose lead. At one with her owner and enjoying her time in the ring.

MPB (0)

PB (1)

  1. McGrath’s Brenndarcy Dreamsville – 10-months old wheaten. Well-balanced with a lovely head and pretty expression. Correct bite. Good reach of neck flowing into a level topline. Shown in profuse coat of correct texture. Moved well when she settled. (BPB)

JB (5,3a)

  1. Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Moonstruck – a feminine bitch that caught my eye immediately. Well balanced throughout and shown in excellent coat and condition. Lovely head and correct bite with a mischievous but pretty expression. Correct front assembly and good reach of neck into a level topline and good tailset. She moved soundly in both directions, with excellent drive. Seriously considered her in the bitch challenge but she lost interest in the final line up. A close call. (RBB)
  2. Peers’ Tweedisle Guinevere – a pretty wheaten bitch. Smaller made than 1 but still well-balanced with good proportions. Broad skull and correct bite with a pronounced stop and lovely expression. Good reach of neck and level topline. Moved with rear drive but front movement could tighten.

MB (3,2a)

  1. Waites’ Specially Designed By Svendalens – another pretty wheaten bitch with a broad skull, pronounced stop and correct bite. Darker points would create a more typical expression. Clean shoulders with a level topline and good angulations. She is well off for bone and substance, with a good ribcage. Moving slightly close behind today.

PGB (4,1a)

  1. Firth’s Cairngold Clara – grey brindle with a lovely head and a melting expression. She is a small bitch but well-balanced throughout. Correct bite, pronounced stop and neat ears. Correct shoulders and good reach of neck into a level topline and good tailset. Moved well. Shown in a quality coat of correct texture.
  2. Melia’s Carradine Minnie’s Magic – nicely balanced dark grey brindle with a feminine head. Broad skull, correct bite and neat ears. Good reach of neck, clean shoulders and well off for bone and substance. Shown in good coat and condition. She seemed to lose her topline on the move.
  3. Waites’ Specially Designed By Svendalens

LB (3)

  1. Shannon & McGrath’s Brenndarcy Bit Of Bother – dark grey brindle shown in short but quality harsh coat of correct texture. Broad skull, neat ears and mischievous expression with desired dark points. Clean shoulders and good ribcage. Nice neck into level topline, which she held on the move. Good tail set. Rear movement is a touch close.
  2. Melia’s Carradine Minnie’s Magic – 2nd in PGB
  3. Peers’ Tweedisle Carefree

OB (4,1a) A nice class

  1. Waites’ Seveek Snow Angel With Svendalens – a light grey brindle shown in excellent coat and condition. Broad skull, strong jaw correct bite and neat ears. She had a lovely expression. Correct front assembly and good angulations. Tail set bang on and she moved with drive and purpose. A close call in the final line up between her and my winner in junior bitch and they could easily have swapped places. However, she didn’t stop showing, which won her the bitch challenge today. (BB & RBIS)
  2. McGrath’s Brenndarcy Cinnamon Girl For Owenreagh – another nice bitch. A well-balanced light red with a broad skull, correct bite and neat ears. For me, darker points would complete her head and expression. She is sound throughout with correct shoulders, good reach of neck, level topline and tail set bang on. Moved well with drive and purpose and shown in excellent coat and condition.
  3. Culliford’s Brenndarcy Maid In Heaven
