******AMY POP IDOL******

Today, June 24th, Amy had an audition for Thames Television's "Pop Idol".  The venue was Manchester where we joined about 500 other hopefuls who had all been allocated the 8.30am slot.  The contestants went in 10 at a time, all having been allocated with a unique entry number, Amy's was 8118.  Then on to an individual audition before a producer and several technicians, camera, sound lighting etc.  We were told that the successful contestants would be given a letter and then asked to return in one week's time.

Amy hadn't made her mind up which song to sing until the night before when she eventually chose Michelle Branch's Are You Happy Now?  So when she left me I felt more nervous than she did.  I sat for some 20 minutes seeing everyone coming out obviously disappointed, not one I saw had been chosen to return.  I fully expected Amy to come back to me with a smile on her face, but disappointment in her eyes, she's a brave lass you know!  You have to be lucky to even get an audition, let alone get through the first round.  Amy eventually came back, a big grin on her face, waving a pale blue letter in her hand.  She'd made the cut!!!  Plenty of hugs and envious looks from all around, it did feel good, almost like winning a 1st!

So we return next Tuesday, Amy's time slot is 1.00pm, so please all keep your fingers crossed.  We estimate that probably 5 - 10% of the 20,000 will return, so there is still a long way to go.  Next week Amy has to return in exactly the same clothes (and I do too, although they didn't film me as far as I know!) and sing the same song before more producers.  If she gets through that one then later that day she has to sing before the celebrity judges (you must have heard of Pop Idol's Mr Nasty - Simon Cowell).  I understand that the programme is will eventually reach our screens in August.  Anything could happen but I know Amy will give as good as she gets!  If she doesn't get any further at all then it will all have been a great experience for a 16 year old!
