CRUEL thugs beat a
pet dog within inches of his life leaving him with horrific injuries, writes
Emma Reeves.
His owner Ray Riley, from Hatfield, was left with no choice but to have Lucky
put down after the attack.
"They had hit him so hard over the back of the head that they had
injured his brain," said the 74-year-old.
"He started to go blind and was losing the use of his limbs."
The incident happened as Ray walked him across a field in Birchwood shortly
before Christmas.
He said: "I heard him yelp.
"I made my way towards him and there he was. The thugs who had attacked
him had gone."
Ray bought the Cairn Terrier more than a year ago to give him some company
after his wife died.
"He was my best friend," said Ray. "He was always there for me
and would never leave me alone.
"He used to jump up on my bed and nibble my ear every morning."
Ray did not report the incident to the police. He said: "I didn't think
it was worth it.
"It is not going to bring my dog back."
Lucky, pictured right, who was about five years old, came from a rescue home
in Liverpool.
Ray is currently looking around animal shelters for another dog.
"I am looking for a new dog, but I won't ever find another one like
him," he added.
"My neighbours are wonderful and they are helping me look.
