A Very Royal Cairn

Clips of Mary Queen of Scots with her Cairn Terrier, taken from previews of the BBC’s “The Virgin Queen” to be shown on Sunday Night.

Historians state that Mary had hid her pet terrier under her skirts when she was beheaded.

“These hunting terriers were highly valued in Scotland. James VI, son of Mary Queen of Scots, sent six Cairn-like terriers to the King of France as a gift, around 1600. So concerned was he about the risks of the ocean voyage that the dogs were divided into two groups of three and sent on separate ships.” (Readers Digest)
