More Cairns Identified?

We have received the following email from Barbara Candella

I have just read the latest news items on the Midland website and thought you might like to see this mirror

2years ago we visited New Zealand. In an antique shop, on the floor propped up against the wall was this mirror. My husband Frank spotted it first, naturally I had to buy it and then we managed to get it home without it being broken.

The illustration of 2 Cairns is titled “Sandy and Jock”. Somehow this has been superimposed on the glass, the surround is mirrored with a bevelled edge. Because of the bevelled edge on the mirror I guessed it would have been pre World War 2. I could not decipher the artists name and put these photos up on CairnBreeders, someone identified the signature for me as Arthur Wardle.

I have done as much research as possible since, this portrait never seems to have been used on cigarette cards or postcards….but having just read the news item re wanting help to have the 2 Cairns identified, then reading the information below about Mrs Walter Hutchinson owning “Sandy” and Lady Hutchinson owning “Jock”…..both Cairn Terriers, do you think there might be a connection between their 2 Cairns and the Sandy and Jock painting signed by Arthur Wardle in my mirror.”

Well Barbara, I would say that was too much of a coincidence but I’m sure someone out there will be able to confirm this.

PS. Wish it was on my wall!

Yvonne Croyman Writes

“ Ihave tried to find the two on glass, and drawn a blank, but Arthur Wardle was a prolific painter of dogs, and may have done these with no reference to any particular Cairns.  The moral of this is for all of us is to write the names on our photos, BEFORE we forget !!! so in years to come when someone else is trying to put a name to a picture, found who knows where, it can be identified (I am guilty of not taking my own advice, new years resolution is to put this right). I have attached the picture of the Hutchinson's Cairns as it appears in the book, it was painted by F.T. Daws (another prolific dog painter) but as you will see the style is completely different.”

Thanks Yvonne for the info and advice.
