“My overall picture was of a well organised Show that was also a very social occasion with everybody enjoying their day and being so friendly.   In the U.K. people are on the road so quickly after the show, but with so many of you caravanning and staying, it made for such a good atmosphere and a lovely opportunity on Saturday evening  to talk "Cairn talk" and much laughing with the exhibitors.   The Cairn agility was very entertaining and in some cases amusing with some entrants reaching a really high standard and others being diverted to more exciting things in true Cairn fashion!

I so enjoyed going over the bitches with the puppies being the most difficult because so much can change.  Generally I found the quality high with lovely heads, mostly big teeth, good toplines, tailsets etc in fact all the essentials and happy dispositions.   Coats in the adult classes were of very good quality and on the younger ones "coming" or "going".

The Champions Class was a sight to behold and I thanked all the exhibitors for the privilege of going over their dogs - what  a credit they all were to their owners and the breed - truly lovely Cairns and difficult to separate them.     The Veteran Class was also of very similar quality.   The Veteran winners were;  Best  Veteran Dog: Int NORD UCH Rasken's Robinson  Crusoe (Ch Raskens Robbie Robinson x Ch Tribuns Yrsa), Best Veteran Bitch, NORDUCH NV 02 Magnum Opus Galanta, (Charda Cevin Costner x Ch magnum Opusd Aniara)

When the best dog and best bitch went round the ring I found them a very well matched pair and thoroughly agreed that the dog was Best In Show on maturity  - but feel sure that the bitch will have her day.

On the minus side I found rear movement, on some otherwise lovely Cairns, disappointing, the drive was there but some were too close, some cowhocked, some with one foot turning in or out.  All very familiar to me as we have the same problem in the UK.  Front movement, except for one or two was good.”

“Never having judged in Europe before, the idea of giving an oral critique on each dog whilst the exhibitor was standing  next to me was very daunting. Once I had started though I soon got used to it.

I was told when I finished judging that my Best Dog and B.O.B was father to my CC winner, who was second best dog, and also to the third best dog, and grandfather to my best puppy. Also while Alma was judging the progeny class I was talking to someone so not watching closely but I noticed in one group a Cairn which I liked very much, I couldn’t understand how I had missed it in the classes, after judging I asked about him, it turned out that he was only entered in the progeny class and he was  Multi Ch. Rottriver’s Stable Rat ww-00 and all my top winners were his descendants.

My Best Dog and Best in Show was Int S Nuch NV-03  Rasken’s Royal Trade Mark (Sire: Ch Rottriver's Stable Rat, Dam: Ch Penticharm Lucky Heather of Paracairn).  A super dog in all respects. The CC winner was Wictory’s Logotype (Sire Ch Raskens Royal Trade Mark, Dam: Ch Wicktory's Buttercup)

Alma chose for her Best Bitch Hjohoo’s Hjour Unbelievable, (Sire Ch Hjohoo's Wanna Believe in Hjo, Dam: Ch Hjohoo's Knock Hjo Out), she was also the CC winner.

My best puppy and B Puppy in Show  came from the baby puppy class and was one I would love to have brought home, Wictorys Whatever Next. (Sire:  Ch. Blondes Have More Fun at Eskadale, Dam:  Ch. Reginadicuori.)   A very striking looking pup with that true Cairn spirit. Alma’s best puppy was GoldGlint’s Give Way, (Sire Magnum Opus Sombrero, Dam:   Goldclint's Game Over)

I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the dogs, there were obviously some faults amongst them but no more or less than anywhere else. I was also conscious of the fact that most of my critiques said the same thing but these were the things that I was looking for in each dog. There are four things that are very important to me when I am judging - the head, the coat, teeth, and strong quarters.

The head because the dog most importantly MUST look like a Cairn and have that “varminty” expression.  The coat must be double and with the outer coat hard to withstand any weather whilst he was working.

The teeth must be strong as he had to hang on to whatever was down that burrow or under the stones where his master had sent him. This couples with the strength in his quarters to pull out the prey, sometimes bigger than himself.

I found very few with untypical heads, almost all had really good double coats, the baby puppies still needed their undercoats but with the warmth of the weather recently I forgave this.

I was most impressed with the lovely big strong teeth and bites in almost every dog and most of the dogs had very good muscled thighs and strength in their quarters.

The most common fault amongst them was movement. Not the stride, as some really flowed, but coming and going that parallel action was lacking.

The show itself was in a lovely setting and very well organised and I was grateful for the occasional break in judging whilst we waited for exhibitors from the other ring and the picking of the lottery tickets. This gave me time to gather my thoughts and have a little sit down in the shade. My ring secretaries could not have been more helpful and I would like to thank them.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Agility, so well run by the three young ladies, and some Cairns doing what Cairns do - “their own thing” wonderful!! There was a very relaxed atmosphere and everyone was very friendly. The get together in the evening gave us chance to chat to exhibitors and learn more about them. Norman enjoyed the “Boys Club” he said “I had a great time, laughed a lot and I didn’t even know what they were talking about!”
