 28/04/12

Yesterday afternoon we found out that a little terrier had been run over on the main road near home.  I contacted the local taxi firm and tracked down the driver who explained what had happened.  Jack was running in the road and he couldn't avoid him, he clipped him and could not really say how hard.  Jack ran off.

We were all devastated and really thought he was hiding somewhere just waiting to die.  We cried and cried.

I had convinced myself that we would not see Jack again and told Amy it was now just a waiting game.  Amy was not convinced and was determined to try again.

We had already put up over 60 posters, had pushed flyers through around 100 houses but at 7pm last night Amy and Alec started putting up new posters asking everyone to check their gardens and sheds.  She took a squeaky toy with her so that she could attract Jack if he was hiding anywhere.

Feeling ashamed at wanting to give up Alan and I put up another 30 posters in the area and got back home at around 8.30pm.

At 9pm my mobile rang, the voice was not recognisable but eventually I made out the words "We've got him mum, we've found Jack!"  Amy said she thought he had broken his leg as he was limping.  He had come out of the bush limping towards Amy and Alec.  They could not believe their eyes.

I immediately rang our vet and asked for an emergency appointment for him to be checked over.  At 9.45pm we were at the vets with one very soggy dog.  The vet examined him and said he didn't think there was a break, it felt like nerve damage and the full use would come back in time.  However he was concerned that the scapula may be damaged.  He gave Jack a pain killing injection and said that Jack looked fairly well to say he had been out all night and hit by a car. He asked that we take Jack back for an x ray the following morning.

Just having returned from the vets, we are all over the moon.  Jack has suffered no bone damage and the x rays were clear.  You can see from the photograph that he is nearly back to his old self playing with his toys.

Aren't we so lucky?

So thanks to all who have telephoned/emailed/texted/posted messages of support and thanks to Alison Harg and Margaret Machin and Liz and all at doglost.

After the vets bill the next item of expenditure is a GPS tracking dog collar.  Don't laugh because I am deadly serious.  I never want to go through all that again.  All this happened only 3 hours after Alan leaving hospital for the last time.  He was feeling much better and now will continue his treatment as an outpatient.

Thanks Linda
