LINDA FIRTH JUDGES IN CALIFORNIA
BOB Ch Maverston Highlands Balvenie
“I judged
the above show at the Queen Mary Events Park, Long Beach, California. I
had an entry of 56 which is apparently above average. The venue
was simply quite stunning, our ring overlooked the ocean. This club
really know how to put on a show. The theme “Sur-Fur Safari – Cairns in
the Curl” and the ring was made to look like a big swimming pool with A Cairn
Lifeguard on duty and a large wave at the ringside. The Club offered
beautiful special prizes to winners. I last
judged in California 9 years ago and I can honestly say that I was very
impressed with how the quality has improved. The majority of Cairns I
judged could easily compete and win at European shows, whereas 9 years ago I
would say that one would easily identify them as the American type. Heads have
always been good in America and they were now, I only found a few which
lacked stop and had long muzzles. I did find a few bad mouths but the
majority were a good scissor, the US standard says that they should be
neither overshot nor undershot. Most Cairns were shown in good hard
condition and with lovely double coats of the correct texture. Although
coats were in good condition, a few exhibitors still insisted on using
products, particularly on the head. There is really no need. Movement I
found very true indeed, with straight fronts and plenty of drive and width in
the rear. All in all
the breeders and exhibitors in the US should be rightly proud of their
Cairns. BOB was an
absolutely lovely male, Ch Maverston Highlands Balvenie, BOS – Ch Terriwood
Leading Lady. Winners Dog & Best of Winners was Dufdon’s Fifth
Gear, Reserve Winners Dog Scotch Broom Colum Mac Niall (out of Tweedisle
Myrtle Berry), Winners Bitch Yellow Brick Road On Stage and Reserve Winners
Bitch Cobblestone’s Gaelic Sohl. The Club and
the exhibitors made Alan and I most welcome and we had a lovely time. Further
