BRENDA IN
SWEDEN I was absolutely thrilled when last year I
received my invitation to judge in Degeberga,
Sweden. Not only was it the Swedish Cairn Terrier Clubs Championship show, it
was also its 60th Anniversary celebration show. Ingrid Claezon was my contact and she was absolutely brilliant
in guiding me before, during and after the show. We (Danny came too) decided to make it a longer
break and spent 3 days in beautiful Malmo after judging. As Degeberga is in the
South of Sweden we flew to Copenhagen.
Urban Arnesson met us in Hylle,
just over “The Bridge” from the airport, he was our
brilliant guide and chauffer for the duration of our stay in Degeberga. He took us on scenic routes so we could admire
the lovely countryside. On the day of the show Urban picked us up, it was
a beautiful warm and sunny day. (So my sun hat was needed!) I had a brilliant
entry of 63. Unfortunately one exhibitor’s car broke down on the way. The show began with me following a Scottish
Bagpiper complete with kilt, into the showring. A
lovely homage to our Cairn Terrier Breed’s heritage. As this was the first time I had judged the
Swedish Cairns I had an open mind as to quality etc. I do remember that some who were imported to the
UK in the late 90’s, early 2000’s were quite over angulated and up to size.
You could always recognise a Swedish Cairn by its outline,
I saw none of this in any of my exhibits. I had some excellent exhibits in all classes. I
also had some newcomers to the show ring who were a little shy on the table,
overall temperaments were excellent.
All exhibits were in good condition, I found none obviously overweight
or with bad coats. Coats on the whole
were clean and of good texture. My last UK judging appointment was the Southern
Cairn Terrier Club’s Championship Show in February 2022 and honestly I cannot
really say that there was a great difference in quality and type, plus my BIS
from the junior dog class there was a Swedish Import! Sadly, I had only had one male pup on the day,
Nose Cone Your Special Tea Order. He was a very promising red, a nice size
with good movement for his age, (I do hope Swedish exhibitors are not going
to follow what is happening in the UK - less breeders keeping males. Danny
and I always “Run on” the best pups - male or female. We need a good choice
of stud dogs to keep our breed from being spoilt by getting too inbred.) My Best Puppy in show, Hjohoo's
Hjo Are A Piece Of Art, was a delightful cream bitch, she had lots of quality and ring presence for one
so young. BIS Junior was Hagahu's
Oops I Did It Again, a red brindle bitch, very promising and lots to like
about her. My Best Dog was from the Open class, Starglen Enjoy This Little Man. He caught my eye as
soon as he came into the ring, his movement was so free and a pleasure to
watch, he moved around the ring effortlessly. Slightly larger than I normally
go for, but he was balanced. His attractive head, expression, and temperament
were typical Cairn, I loved him. There was definitely more quality in the bitch
classes, I had some difficult choices, my open bitch
class had 19 exhibits! I was pleased with my final placings, my best Junior
and Young Dog winners as with my pup were all female. My Best Breeders – Rottrivers
- were of a good age range and so alike in type and colour (dark Brindle). As
I approached this group they all turned their heads in unison and looked at
me causing my heart to melt! My BIS Veteran, Ringtorps
Fresco, was a very hard decision, all three veterans
that exhibited were in super condition and belied their ages. My winner was the eldest at 13, he is still a lovely show boy! My Best Bitch and Best in Show was Hjohoo’s I’m Perfect For Hjo -
a stunning, very feminine red from the young dog class (15 -24 months). She
oozed quality and was a joy to go over. Her coat shone in the sunshine, plus
she was so attentive to her handler. I couldn’t fault her in movement or type
and I was thrilled to give her top honours. So thank you again to the Swedish CTC for asking me
to judge and to Ingrid and Urban for their care. But a big thank
you to my exhibitors for entering and taking my decisions in good heart. Brenda Shannon (Brenndarcy Cairn Terriers) |
