Cairn Terrier Critique

The Northern Cairn and West Highland White Terrier Club open show 2 April 2020

I was delighted to be asked to judge Cairns and BIS. Many thanks to the Officers and Committee of the Northern Cairn and West Highland White Terrier Club for the privilege of judging a Breed club Show, I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon with the dogs. We had a very long wait before we could enter the ring, so I was pleased that the dogs were all still showing well at the end of a long day, I’m sure some will have performed even better had it been earlier in the day.

Cairns

PD (4,1abs)

1. Haim’s Carradine Arfa Pint. An eye-catcher, and at 6 months old, a real baby with lots of developing to do, but keen and alert and full of fun. He has a pleasing outline and overall balance, quality head, dark eyes and neat ears. Good bone without being overdone, nice neck into clean shoulders, firm topline and nicely made behind. Presented well and in really good coat for his age. Moves with good reach and drive. Pleased to award him BPD, BPIB and RBPIS.

2. Tucas & Tobutt’s Seveek Country Lad. Attractive masculine head still needing to fill out a little and develop, with dark eyes and alert expression, neat well placed ears. Good front angulation and depth of chest and level back. Nice rear angulation with good bend of stifle, tail set on and carried well. Shown with a good harsh double coat. Moves steadily but not with quite the drive of class winner today.

3. Keeves’ Seveek Guilded Dreams.

JD (1)

1. Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic (AI). A super dog, who immediately appeals for his breed typical outline and workmanlike appearance. Masculine in outlook with the best of heads of ideal proportions, small neat ears, nice dark eyes and strong muzzle, all giving a good Cairn expression. He has a good front, firm topline, nicely made behind and correctly set on tail. Shown in a natural but tidy double coat. Moves out so soundly and positively with a free-flowing stride and with reach and drive. Delighted to give him the nod for BD, BOB and ultimately BIS.

PGD (4,1abs)

1. Hiam’s Carradine Podgy Paddie. Nothing podgy about this smart boy with all the breed essentials, he is pleasing for balance and outline. Attractive masculine head with a keen expression, neat ears and lovely dark eyes. Well-made front, firm topline, good ribbing and well set tail, all topped off with a well presented double coat, just needing a touch more head furnishings to complete the picture. Well-schooled and attentive to his handler, he scores highly on the move, with good reach and drive enabling him to cover the ground well. Pleased to award him RBD.

2. Munday’s Lentrica Mystical Warrior. Built on slightly bigger lines than the winner, this is another smart and showy boy with good overall balance. Quite a strong masculine head, very dark eyes and neat ears which he used well, all giving a keen expression. Good shoulders and forechest, firm topline and well-turned hindquarters, well placed tail and good tail carriage. Shown in harsh natural double coat. Moves steadily and soundly but not covering the ground quite as well as the winner today.

3. Peers’ Tweedisle Charismatic Guy

OD (3,1abs)

1. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw’s Come Dancing with Macmoon JW ShCM, ShCEx, OSW. Lovely type with a pleasing workmanlike outline. I liked his masculine head, good skull shape and strength to muzzle. Moderate neck with good flow into clean shoulders, level topline and good hindquarters. Shown with a good harsh double coat. Moved out well.

2. Peer’s Tweedisle Jaunty Lad. A study and workmanlike dog with good overall balance. Well-proportioned head with good strength to muzzle, very dark eyes, he wasn’t using his ears so well today. Moderate neck flowing well into a firm and level topline. Good rear angulation with nice bend of stifle and tail set on well. Shown with a good harsh double coat. Moved out confidently and soundly all ways.

VD/B (1)

1. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon ShCM, VW. I liked his size and shape and in lovely condition for his age. Attractive head, deep stop and dark eyes giving a keen expression. Nice flow of neck into clean shoulders, well-made body, good rear angulation with nice bend of stifle and correctly set tail. Top coat harsh, lacking a bit of undercoat at the moment. Moves out soundly and positively with a flowing stride and with reach and drive Please to award him BVD, BVIB and BVIS.

PB (6,2abs)

1. Felters & Rumens’ Birselaw Caol Lla. BPB. Very feminine girl with the prettiest of heads, I liked her size and lovely balanced outline whilst still having the desired workmanlike appearance. Nicely proportioned head, darkest of eyes and neat ears. Moderate neck, well laid shoulders and level topline with nice bend of stifle. Shown a lovely double coat of harsh texture. Moved out with good drive from behind, just needing to tighten a little in front.

2. Firth’s Birselaw Cora at Cairngold (naf) (taf). No wonder I found it hard to separate these two girls, I see from looking at the catalogue afterwards, that they are litter sisters, splitting hairs really, but today, just felt she wasn’t concentrating or moving quite as well as winner, but she is super for type with a lovely well-proportioned head, very feminine, dark eyes and neat ears. Well off for bone, moderate neck flowing well into a firm and level topline and well angulated hindquarters, shown in lovely harsh double coat. I’m sure they will change places as the show season progresses this year.

3. Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Precious Pumpkin Pie.

PGB (7)

1. Shannon & Storr’s Doonrae Rebel Rebel among Brenndarcy. A beautiful girl who took my eye straight away, not always got her mind on the job and can give her handler a bit of a hard time, but despite her naughtiness, I felt that she earned her place on her lovely breed type. Well-proportioned feminine head, short muzzle and deep stop all giving a typical Cairn expression. Nice flow of neck into clean shoulders, level topline and well-made hind quarters with nice bend of stifle. Shown and presented well with correct natural harsh double coat. When she sets her mind to it, she moves with good reach and drive. Pleased to award her RBB.

2. Miller’s Cornton Fyne Hope. Another lovely girl, and close up in my decisions, well made and balanced throughout, she has a Lovely feminine head, deep stop, dark eyes all giving a keen expression. Good front, moderate neck flowing into firm topline and nicely made hindquarters. Well-presented and in harsh natural double coat. She moved out soundly just not quite the drive from behind as the winner today, but a quality girl overall.

3. Lund & Long’s Lentrica Hocus Pocus by Jorvikairn.

OB (6,3abs)

1. Inett, Harrison & Clayton’s Carradine Jo. BB, BOS. This lovely girl stood out for me, good for size and so well balanced with a workmanlike appearance. She has a really feminine well-proportioned head, strong muzzle, dark eyes and neat ears all giving a typical Cairn expression. Moderate neck with good flow into clean shoulders, level topline, well-muscled rear with correct angulation. Shown with a good harsh coat. A happy showgirl with a good rapport with handler. She moves out confidently displaying really good reach and drive. Pleased to award her BB and BOS.

2. Lund’s Cairngold Brandy Snap by Jorvikairn. A very appealing girl, with a pretty well-proportioned head, good stop, and neat well placed ears, just a shade finer than the class winner. Well-made body with good spring of rib. She has as a moderate neck with well laid shoulders, level back, good rear angulations and well set on tail. Shown in great condition with harsh double coat. Moves with good reach and drive from behind.

3. Bateman’s Carradine Fizz Bomb.

Best in Show. Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic (AI) (Cairn). Great little showman, scores highly on his free-flowing stride and sturdy and workmanlike appearance.

Reserve Best in Show. Griffiths’ Karamynd Snow Queen (WHWT). Beautiful young girl of great quality, who handles well on the table, her neck flows nicely into well laid shoulders, good length of back and tail set on correctly, all toppled off with immaculately presented crisp jacket. Not quite so settled as the Cairn on the move today.

Best Puppy in Show. Bouwhuis & Hamilton’s Llovall Adam at Ladyleigh (WHWT). Very smart and eye-catching youngster with lots of ring presence to him, keen and alert with a well-balanced profile. His neck flows into a firm and level topline, well angulated hindquarters and coat presented beautifully and of good texture. Moves with ease around the ring with good drive in the rear.

Reserve Best Puppy in Show. Haim’s Carradine Arfa Pint (Cairn). Just losing out on maturity to the Westie, but has bags of potential and still showing his socks off at the end of a long day. One to watch.

Best Veteran in Show. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon ShCM, VW. BVD (Cairn). On his own in the challenge for best veteran, another who still showing well with a good rapport with his handler.
